Super Bowl a global hit but a clear miss for some
New Orleans leaders, city employees, artists, musicians, and hospitality industry staff spent years prepping for the Super Bowl and now that it's come and gone, some are left wondering if the major investment was worth it after all.
The big picture: The week of Super Bowl itself is already a massive event, but the city may not feel its biggest impact yet, New Orleans & Co. CEO Walt Leger says.
A key goal, he tells Axios New Orleans, was to "create demand for the future decade or so."
"We're going to use this as a tool to paint the picture of what New Orleans has to offer, what it can do and prove it can host one of the most complex events on the planet and do it as well or better than anyone," he says.
That can turn into "hundreds if not thousands of other events that will in turn create additional economic opportunity for neighborhoods and businesses all across the city."
To that end, early returns do show success.
People like Cardi B and Chad " Ochocinco" Johnson heaped praise upon the city on social media as Taylor Swift was spotted dining at Lilette and Apple CEO Tim Cook rolled into Domilise's with Odell Beckham Jr..
Then, top sports journalists with massive followings, like Ian Rapoport and Albert Breer, put out public calls to bring the Super Bowl back to New Orleans ASAP.
Plus, a state effort to attract new business seemed to work, too, Louisiana Economic Development Secretary Susan Bourgeois tells Axios New Orleans.
Conversations around new business deals were happening "in the halls of the Superdome between company executives, [Gov. Jeff Landry] and me about when we'd make some new announcements," she says.
"We got a lot of business done."
Yes, but: Business wasn't booming for everyone.
Despite its location in a busy Airbnb neighborhood and weekend promotions with a celebrity bartender and free king cake, the Southern Food and Beverage Museum saw a total of eight visitors over Super Bowl weekend, executive director Connie Jackson tells Axios New Orleans. The venue saw about 12 times that visitation during Sugar Bowl weekend, she says.
The venue did get interest for private parties, she says, but those didn't pan out. Still, corporate cooking classes with Super Bowl visitors did make up for the lost revenue.
"My business, along with a variety of tour businesses that we work with, also did terribly during Super Bowl week," says Leonard Crist, who owns tour company Gators and Ghosts.
"It wasn't that it didn't meet expectations; it was actually worse than a similar random winter week before the Mardi Gras stuff gets going."
What we're watching: Hotel data won't be in until later this week, and tax numbers that'll indicate visitor spend won't be in for at least a month, Leger says.
The bottom line: "Some businesses will have prospered, and others will maybe feel like they would have liked to receive more business opportunities," Leger says.
"There will be lessons learned … about how to try to activate and engage audiences who come in the future. … But this is global in reach and gives us a chance to attract countless other events."

Dave Portnoy reveals whether Pat Mahomes Sr. vs. John Rocker fight could be revived
For better or worse, the celebrity boxing match between John Rocker and Patrick Mahomes Sr. appears to be dead. A bout between the dad of the Chiefs' superstar quarterback and the former Braves closer that was initially set for April has been officially cancelled, Barstool's Dave Portnoy told TMZ Sports. 'That fight ain't gonna happen,' Portnoy said. 'The Mahomeses shut that down. I think Patrick, the quarterback, was like, 'Why the hell is my dad fighting John Rocker in Rough N' Rowdy?' So, he got in the middle of it. They got in the middle of it and didn't allow it to happen.' 3 Patrick Mahomes looks on after the Kansas City Chiefs defeated the Tennessee Titans in the AFC Championship Game at Arrowhead Stadium on January 19, 2020 in Kansas City, Missouri. The Chiefs defeated the Titans 35-24. Getty Images Portnoy previously said on 'The Unamed Show' that the fight fell apart after Patrick Mahomes II's wife, Brittany, and his agent intervened. 'Mahomes' agent, the football player, and Brittany — from what I am told — intervened and were like, 'There's no way this fight's happening. We're going to cut this guy off if he does it,' Portnoy said. 'They came to us … they hated each other and wanted to fight,' Portnoy added, indicating that the idea originated with Rocker and Mahomes Sr. themselves. The bout was arranged under Barstool's 'Rough 'N Rowdy' banner, and TMZ reports that Mahomes Sr. signed a contract in mid-January to appear on the April card. Court records obtained by TMZ indicate he would have made at least $85,000 from the bout. The fight gained early buzz during Super Bowl week when Rocker and Mahomes Sr. staged an altercation in New Orleans, an act Mahomes later admitted was staged was for publicity. FilmMagic The two also had a spat in April where Rocker tweeted of Mahomes on the day the fight was initially supposed to take place. 'Instead of fighting today he backed out like a little bitch because his son and his loser wife decided it'd be a bad look to the family name for him to get in the ring,' he wrote, then added, 'Bunch of f–king woke liberals.' While Rocker continues to vent, Portnoy confirmed in a follow-up that 'there's no chance' the fight will be rescheduled. 3 Barstool founder and CEO Dave Portnoy is seen before the Florida Atlantic Owls and Loyola (Il) Ramblers game in the Barstool Invitational at Wintrust Arena on November 8, 2023 in Chicago, Illinois. Getty Images Both Rocker and Mahomes last pitched in the majors in 2003. The attention Rocker draws outweighs his professional success. He pitched five full seasons, most notably for the Atlanta Braves from 1998-01, where he was their closer, though his play has since been overtaken by his controversial comments on various subjects over the years, along with admitting to steriod use. Mahomes pitched in the majors from 1992-03, most notably out of the Mets bullpen in 1999 and 2000, also enjoying stints with the Twins, Red Sox and Rangers. He's had three DWI charges, including one he pled guilty to just last year.

New Photos Show That Kevin Costner & Christine Baumgartner May Not Have Buried the Hatchet Yet
It seems that despite finalizing their divorce and seemingly focusing on co-parenting, Kevin Costner and Christine Baumgartner can't seem to bury the hatchet. In photos (and eye-witness accounts) obtained by TMZ, Costner and Baumgartner were in attendance for their son Cayden's high school graduation in Santa Barbara. However, they were so far apart from one another throughout. More from SheKnows Kurt Russell & Goldie Hawn Are Allegedly Playing Matchmaker for a Newly-Single A-Lister While they were both in attendance for their son, they were on opposite ends of the school grounds to take pics with him. So while Baumgartner is planning a wedding, and Costner has moved on with his dating life, it seems the tension still hasn't died down. For those who don't know, Costner and Baumgartner divorced in 2024 after nearly 20 years together, but continue to co-parent their three children, named Cayden, Hayes, and Grace. Soon after their divorce, Baumgartner started dating her now-fiancé, Josh Connor. However, Costner alleged there was an overlap between their relationship and her new one. Baumgartner filed for divorce from the Yellowstone actor after nearly 20 years of marriage, citing 'irreconcilable differences' in the paperwork. Then, for about a year, Costner and Baumgartner's divorce played out quite publicly, with many jabs and back-and-forths based around their finances (specifically child support payments). (Fun fact: Along with his divorce from Baumgartner, Costner had another messy divorce from his first wife Cindy Silva, where he allegedly had an affair and she received an $80 million settlement.)Best of SheKnows Every Time Paris Jackson's Bold Red Carpet Fashion Took Our Breath Away Every Single Time Kate Middleton's Royal Fashion Made Us Stop in Our Tracks Ariana Madix, Kristen Stewart, & More Stars Who Had Dramatic Hair Changes

Cowboys Need Dak Prescott Obsession To End Super Bowl Drought
Cowboys Need Dak Prescott Obsession To End Super Bowl Drought originally appeared on Athlon Sports. FRISCO - Dak Prescott does not hesitate in talking about adversity, in his life and in general. At the same time, as he enters his 10th in the NFL with the Dallas Cowboys, he has reached life's peaks in so many ways. Advertisement He's in love with fiancee Sarah Jane Ramos. The couple just welcomed their second child, another baby girl, to the world. He tops the NFL in salary at an all-time high $60 million per year, which helps him do things like tear down his $3 million mansion to build something bigger and to donate mountains of money (and his time) to charitable causes. But ... He has yet to reach the pinnacle of the sport. With Prescott approaching his 32nd birthday in the coming months - yes, there will be the annual cake smashed into his face on July 29 once we get to Oxnard and training camp - it is only natural for him to think about the legacy he will leave when his playing career comes to an end. Advertisement Right? "I'll be damned if it's just for my legacy, for this team, for my personal being, for my sanity,'' he said of that "pinnacle.'' "I want to win a championship.'' That would of course apply if he was making $600,000 instead of $60 million. But in our experience covering the NFL and the Cowboys for more than 35 years, it also takes leadership and talent and luck and an obsession with capturing a Super Bowl. And Dak? He has made it clear that he couldn't care less about his legacy — he wants that ring. Prescott said, "The legacy, whatever comes after I finish playing, will take care of itself. I want to win a championship. The legacy will take care of itself, I have to stay where my feet are." Advertisement The bad news, for right now? It's not being hyper-critical that while Dak's "legacy'' as a person, as a citizen, as a teammate, is pristine ... As a football star, Dak's legacy is that he is a good regular-season quarterback with a 2-5 record in the NFL playoffs. Entering Year 10, time is of the essence for Dak to get that elusive Super Bowl ... in part because of his age but also because his gigantic $240 million contract becomes escapable in two years. The Super Bowl drought is going on 30 years. That's not all Dak's fault, obviously, as he has accomplished so much - he'll soon likely hold the franchise records for wins (he's 18 behind Troy Aikman), passing yards (he's 2,746 behind Tony Romo), and passing touchdowns (he's 35 behind Romo) in the next couple seasons. Advertisement But in the end, those things won't matter much ... not to anybody who is obsessed a about winning Cowboys championship ... at which point the legacy will indeed take care of itself.
