The Florida Panthers play Game 6 of the Stanley Cup Finals Tuesday with it being their potential last chance to leave an impact with this team. Many of the key players are pending free agents including top defenceman Aaron Ekblad.

Florida's first overall pick back in 2014 may be finally leaving the team he's spent his entire 11-year NHL career with in favour of more money elsewhere. One of the reported top suitors for Ekblad is the Detroit Red Wings.
It's no secret the Red Wings are looking to fill holes on their backend and Ekblad could work as a solid foundational piece towards the future. The 29-year-old Windsor native grew up with the Red Wings always in his life, with Detroit just across the river.

This should give the Red Wings a notable leg up over the competition as they are his hometown team of sorts and would allow Ekblad to be close to home where his family resides.
It's very early on in the process as another Stanley Cup with the Panthers could make an impact on his final decision but if Ekblad does choose to test the market, Detroit is one of the favourites if not the favourite to land him.

Ekblad is known for his size, poise, and two-way game that helped him log 33 points in 56 games this past season while averaging nearly 24 minutes of ice time.
Despite a 20-game suspension in March for violating the NHL's performance-enhancing substance policy, Ekblad returned to the lineup and has played a key role in Florida returning to the Stanley Cup Finals for the third straight season. This postseason, he's recorded 12 points through 18 games.

Men's and women's hockey schedules for 2026 Milan Olympics released

The International Ice Hockey Federation unveiled the schedule Tuesday for the men's and women's tournaments at the 2026 Olympics in Milan and Cortina. Women's hockey starts on Feb. 5 with the U.S. against Czechia and Canada versus Finland among the opening games. The U.S. and Canada renew their rivalry in the preliminary round on Feb. 10, and the gold-medal game is set for Feb. 19. Men's hockey with the return of NHL players opens the following day with Finland facing Slovakia and host Italy against Sweden. Without Russia in the 12-team field, the U.S. is grouped with Germany, Latvia and Denmark and will play each of them in a round robin. The U.S. opens Feb. 12 against Latvia, the same day Canada faces Czechia. The NHL's best are participating for the first time since 2014 in Sochi. 'It's great that the NHL players are back in the Olympics,' U.S. general manager Bill Guerin said. 'Obviously it's the biggest sports stage in the world, and we're all happy we're back involved.' No teams are eliminated from group play on the men's side. The top four advance to the quarterfinals, with the remaining eight taking part in a qualification round. Games will take place on NHL-sized rinks at Milano Santagiulia and Milano Rho arenas. The final is scheduled for Feb. 22 as the last event of the Olympics before the closing ceremony. The schedule release came a day after the federations involved announced the first six players named to their respective rosters. The U.S. picked all skaters: forwards Matthew and Brady Tkachuk, Auston Matthews and Jack Eichel and defensemen Quinn Hughes and Charlie McAvoy. Finland is the defending Olympic champion from the Beijing bubble in 2022, when the NHL pulled out because of pandemic-related scheduling issues, and the Russians won in 2018. Canada has won the past two involving NHL players, and GM Doug Armstrong hopes for a third. 'I'm excited about our group,' Armstrong said. 'I know our group wants to go there and wants to put their best foot forward. There's no guarantees in this sport, but I know we're going to go with the right attitude.' ___ AP NHL:

Glaring Weakness of Buccaneers' 2023 First-Round Pick Revealed

Glaring Weakness of Buccaneers' 2023 First-Round Pick Revealed originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers and general manager Jason Licht have drafted well over the past few seasons, and it's resulted in the team winning a record-tying four straight NFC South titles and making five consecutive postseason appearances in a row. Advertisement One of those draft picks, 2023 first-round defensive tackle Calijah Kancey, has been a bright spot on the defensive line with one glaring exception, as Pro Football Focus' Dalton Wasserman explains. "Similar to fellow 2023 first-rounder Mazi Smith, Kancey hasn't lived up to his billing for Tampa Bay through two seasons in the NFL," wrote Wasserman. "To his credit, the undersized Kancey has racked up 85 pressures since the start of 2023, a top-20 mark among defensive tackles. However, that's not enough to offset his dreadful 28.7 PFF run-defense grade in that span." Kancey has appeared in 26 games the past two seasons, all starts, and posted 54 total tackles with 41 solo and 21 for loss. He's added 29 QB hits, forced one fumble, and recovered another. Those who have watched Kancey over the past two seasons have seen him be an important part of the front part of the defense. Advertisement But coming out of college, the knock against him was his size and run-stopping ability and size. NFL analyst Lance Zierlein compared Kancey to former Minnesota Vikings and Seattle Seahawks defender John Randle, and noted his lack of run-stopping prowess. "Undersized, one-gapping defensive tackle who is explosive and productive. He's a strong and determined player, but Kancey is still going to be a hit-or-miss run defender due to his lack of mass and length," Zierlein wrote. "His leverage and motor are often too much for guards to handle alone. Kancey might be most effective as a rotational run defender and full-time, sub-package rusher, but his size will not define him in the NFL." While Kancey might not be the best rushing defender on the team, his value is certainly seen across the board for the Buccaneers.
