Ex NFL Wideout Solves Browns Quarterback Dilemma

Ex NFL Wideout Solves Browns Quarterback Dilemma originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Cleveland Browns are working with a crowded quarterback room this offseason. With Deshaun Watson shelved due to a second Achilles tear in three months back in January, general manager Andrew Berry signed a couple of veterans to fight for the starting role. Advertisement Berry also drafted two young players to make things interesting. The 40-year-old Joe Flacco is the most experienced in the room, followed by Kenny Pickett, Pittsburgh's first-round pick in 2022. Berry selected Dillon Gabriel in the third round this season and Shedeur Sanders in the fifth round. They're all fighting for the starting job in Week 1. But former Green Bay Packers wide receiver James Jones has it all figured out, as he described on a recent episode of "The Facility." "Pickett is still extremely young," Jones said. "If he goes out here and plays well, that's a bonus for your football team, and then you have two young dudes behind them that you are developing. Joe Flacco going out there, I absolutely disagree with that because he's older. You're not going to win a lot. But with Kenny Pickett going out there, he's young. He was a first-rounder." Advertisement 'If it's not Kenny Pickett, the only other option is Shedeur because I believe he's the most-talented quarterback on that roster.". Flacco is clearly the favorite to start due to his experience both in the NFL and in Kevin Stefanski's offense when he subbed for five games back in 2023. But Jones thinks that's a terrible idea. Training camp and the preseason should be fun in Cleveland this season. Ohio State Reveals New Timeline to Name Starting Quarterback

Ohio State Reveals New Timeline to Name Starting Quarterback originally appeared on Athlon Sports. With about two months to go, the Ohio State Buckeyes quarterback room is yet to find its star, and head coach Ryan Day feels that they still have time. Advertisement The front runners for the job are Lincoln Kienholz and Julian Sayin. Amid their heated competition, Day has set a clear timeline for naming the team's starter — late August. In a recent sit‑down with Lettermen Row, Day emphasized that while he's impressed with the developmental strides, the final decision will have to wait. 'I like their progress,' Day told Row. 'I'm excited about it. I see the talent. But that will all be decided in August.' "Summer was the last opportunity to make any type of transformation — physically, mentally, emotionally, leadership‑wise, understanding the playbook." Advertisement "I won't know what that all looks like until we get into August.' The Buckeyes' management wants to keep the competition open throughout the off-season to maximize potential. "It's not just that Ohio State needs a new quarterback. The Buckeyes must replace their national championship-winning quarterback, Will Howard, who only spent one year on campus but had a massive impact on the program." Spencer Holbrook of On3 wrote on Monday. "Howard was gritty, tough, everything the Buckeyes could have wanted both on and off the field. Oh, and he could find open receivers to make plays." Now, with a younger starting lineup and no proven veteran, Ohio State's staff wants clarity before the season opener against Texas on Aug. 30 at AT&T Stadium. Ex-Michigan QB Delivers Verdict on Ohio State's Julian Sayin

Ex-Michigan QB Delivers Verdict on Ohio State's Julian Sayin originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The lofty expectations surrounding the Ohio State Buckeyes are ever-present, even in the face of a new starting quarterback and an unresolved battle for who will win the job before the upcoming season. Advertisement The Buckeyes were the subject of the latest team preview released by the "Crain & Company" podcast. Julian Sayin, who transferred to Ohio State from Alabama after the retirement of Nick Saban, has patiently waited his turn to take over the Buckeyes' offense. However, head coach Ryan Day has not yet named a starter and will do so in August. Podcast co-host David Cone, who played for Ohio State's rival Michigan Wolverines from 2006 to 2009, explained why he's high on Sayin to start and be the successor to Will Howard. "Just the fact that (Sayin's) first game is against the guy who's getting all the hype (Texas Longhorns quarterback Arch Manning), and you maybe think a lot of is because of his last name rather than his ability. Certainly, he must be thinking about that a little bit," Cone began. Advertisement Sayin would be taking over from Howard, who is now a member of the Pittsburgh Steelers after being their sixth-round selection in the 2025 NFL Draft. After four seasons at Kansas State, he joined the Buckeyes and passed for 4,010 yards, 35 touchdowns and 10 interceptions last year. First committed to Alabama, Sayin entered the transfer portal and made the move to Columbus, Ohio, in January 2024. The 6-foot-1, 203-pound signal caller is in competition with Lincoln Kienholz and Tavien St. Clair, a 2025 five-star recruit from Bellefontaine, Ohio. The Buckeyes' offense features one of the best playmakers in the country, wide receiver Jeremiah Smith. As a true freshman, he collected 76 receptions for 1,315 yards and 15 touchdowns.
