But, from his refusal to play first base to slowing down on the base paths, there have been plenty of concerning moments with Devers in 2025. However, a new report shed light on Devers's dealing with a previously unknown injury.

In a new story in the Boston Globe from Peter Abraham, Devers revealed that he had been playing with a groin injury. "Speaking English," Abraham writes. "Devers also revealed that he had been playing with a groin strain that slowed him on the bases in recent games."
While the new injury is concerning, Devers also gave a positive update on how he's feeling amid that groin strain. "I'm feeling better now," Devers said. "It's better running."

It's the first time this injury has been reported or revealed. Alex Cora also apparently didn't know about the injury until Sunday night, after Devers had a viral moment on the base paths.

The injury diagnosis isn't a total surprise, as there was a recent incident on the base paths that caused Red Sox fans and media alike, along with Alex Cora, to be concerned over Devers' health.
During a ground ball he hit to second base against the New York Yankees, Devers slowed down significantly running to first. If he had been at full speed, he'd likely have beaten out the grounder for an infield single.
The aftermath had many Red Sox fans calling Devers lazy, while others believed there to be a lingering injury of some kind. This update from Devers, talking about his groin strain, which he's been dealing with for some time, sheds light on his baserunner mishap against the Yankees.

This update from Devers would normally be more concerning if it weren't for Devers expressing that he's feeling better as of late. It's not affecting his hitting in any way, as Devers has continued to be a force at the plate.
In 2025, Devers has a .276 batting average with 14 home runs and 72 hits. He's totaled 2.24 WAR from the designated hitter spot and has been a huge reason for the Red Sox's success in 2025.
While Devers hasn't shown any decline offensively amid his groin strain, the injury is concerning as this is the first time it's been publicized. But, with Devers saying he is "feeling better," there is a bit more reason to be calm about the new injruy diagnosis.
