Missouri company fights potholes with ‘Botox…for the streets'

ST. LOUIS – Pavement professionals from across the country have trekked to downtown St. Louis for the World of Asphalt, a trade show and conference focused on paving and production trends.
Of the 430 exhibitors showcasing their wares, a Washington, Missouri-based manufacturer says it can solve St. Louis' pothole problems with a product described as 'a Botox injection for the streets.'
According to the Missouri Department of Transportation, melting snow and ice allow moisture to seep beneath a pavement's surface. When water gets trapped underneath and freezes, it expands into ice, causing the pavement to bulge. As the ice melts, the pavement contracts, leaving gaps and voids below the surface.
Add that with the repeated pressure from vehicles driving over these weakened spots, the pavement becomes quite stressed, causing chunks or pieces to break away from potholes.

Lindsey Hermes, president and CEO of BioSpan Technologies, says her company's asphalt sealant RePlay can stop water from seeping to the pavement and stop the pothole process before it can start.
Hermes says RePlay is nearly 90% bio-based, made from oils produced from Missouri-grown soybeans.
The World of Asphalt runs Tuesday through Thursday at America's Center, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Tuesday and Wednesday, and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Thursday.
In the meantime, the City of St. Louis created an interactive pothole map, with the red dots marking potholes that need attention and the blue dots signifying those patched. You can also report a pothole online, on the same web page, and then track the city's progress.

Nvidia (NVDA) to Build First Industrial AI Cloud in Germany

Nvidia (NVDA, Financials) will develop its first industrial AI cloud in Germany to support applications ranging from automotive design to logistics optimization, CEO Jensen Huang said Wednesday at the VivaTech conference in Paris. Warning! GuruFocus has detected 4 Warning Signs with NVDA. The platform will help industrial firms such as BMW and Mercedes-Benz simulate production processes and integrate robotics with artificial intelligence. Biotech companies like Novo Nordisk (NVO, Financials) are also expected to benefit, using Nvidia's tools for drug discovery. Huang said Nvidia will multiply its AI computing capacity in Europe tenfold over the next two years and will open 20 AI factorieslarge-scale infrastructure facilities for building and deploying AI models. He described Europe as newly "awakened" to the importance of sovereign AI development. Nvidia will also expand its technology centers across seven countries, launch a European compute marketplace, and partner with AI startups such as France-based Mistral to run models on 18,000 Nvidia chips. The project aligns with the European Commission's own investment initiative, which earmarked $20 billion in March for building AI factories. Huang emphasized that no country or company can afford to "outsource its intelligence." Separately, Huang reiterated his recent comments that quantum computing is reaching an inflection point and could solve real-world problems within a few years, reversing his prior view that useful quantum systems remain decades away. Arra Finance To Acquire Crescent Auto Finance, Rapidly Scaling Its Subprime Auto Finance Platform

Deal to quadruple auto finance origination capacity and reduce credit application response time to a matter of seconds IRVING, Texas, June 11, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Arra Finance, LLC ('Arra' or the 'Company'), a subprime indirect auto finance company, today announced that it has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire the auto financing division of Crescent Bank ('Crescent'), a New Orleans-based FDIC insured bank with approximately $1 billion in assets that has provided nationwide indirect auto lending since 1991. The deal accelerates the rapid expansion of Arra's platform, enhancing its technology stack and analytics capacity well ahead of growth expectations. Crescent will retain its branch and online retail banking platforms, as well as its commercial lending program, and Arra will become the servicer for Crescent's $815 million originated auto loan portfolio. The transaction is expected to close in 3Q 2025. Financial terms were not disclosed. As a well-established operator in the subprime auto financing space, Crescent has originated upwards of $5.3 billion in auto loans nationwide over its 30-year history and $652 million in the last two years. This acquisition brings Crescent's e-contracting, internal loan servicing and accelerated auto-decision capabilities to the Arra platform, alongside advanced analytics and additional fraud protection tools in underwriting and funding. With financial backing from Obra Capital ('Obra'), Arra now has the operational bandwidth and capital structure necessary to provide a comprehensive suite of financing solutions to auto dealers across the country. Arra expects to rapidly scale delivery of customer financing solutions to dealers by leveraging Crescent's existing operations, with a significantly increased auto finance origination capacity, larger dealer base and the ability to respond to credit applications within seconds of submission. As part of the acquisition, Arra will welcome approximately 180 new employees from Crescent, expanding Arra's best-in-class team by a factor of six. This includes 24 new sales team members, who will support the deployment of Arra's capital base and provide a consistent touchpoint for new and existing dealer customers alike. The new additions will continue to be primarily based in Carrollton, Texas, supporting a seamless operational integration while opening new pathways for opportunity, as enabled by Arra's access to asset-backed financing solutions. 'With today's announcement, we have rapidly advanced Arra's growth trajectory, substantially improving our ability to be the premier financing partner for franchise and select independent dealers,' said Kenn Wardle, Chief Executive Officer of Arra Finance. 'After only six months in market, we are on track to outpace our growth targets by a number of years, and we have developed the platform capabilities necessary to deliver responses to credit applications in a matter of seconds. I look forward to welcoming our new team members as we bring our combined offerings to market and continue to streamline the car buying experience for dealers and consumers across the country.' Gary Solomon Sr., Chairman of Crescent Bank praised the transaction, stating: 'Partnering with Arra and Obra has ensured the talent, momentum and reputation Crescent has garnered over the years will continue to support the auto industry, as Crescent Bank shifts its focus to our core retail banking business.' Crescent Bank has significantly grown its online banking presence nationwide in recent years, particularly in its offering of Certificates of Deposits. Mr. Solomon added, 'This is a pivotal moment for Crescent Bank, as we refocus our investment strategy in support of our local New Orleans area community and nationwide customers alike.' 'Today's announcement is a major growth milestone for Arra, and a testament to the opportunity in the auto finance market,' added Blair Wallace, President and CEO of Obra. 'With the capital structure and flexibility provided by Obra's insurance company balance sheets, Arra has taken decisive and aggressive steps to meet the needs of dealers across the country and become a leading player in the subprime space. The business is capitalized for success in the long term, and we look forward to seeing what's next.' Qualcomm to acquire Alphawave Semi for $2.4B

This story was originally published on Manufacturing Dive. To receive daily news and insights, subscribe to our free daily Manufacturing Dive newsletter. Semiconductor giant Qualcomm Inc. has agreed to buy Alphawave Semi for $2.4 billion in an effort to better position itself for the artificial intelligence and data center boom. The acquisition, expected to close during the first quarter of 2026, would provide San Diego-based Qualcomm with key assets from Alphawave, a U.K.-based chip designer focused on high-speed connectivity and compute silicon for 5G wireless, AI and data center applications. The deal is part of a recent acquisition spree by Qualcomm to build out and enhance its product capabilities for the next generation of technologies. In recent years, Qualcomm, a competitor with Intel, Apple and Nvidia, has been in growth mode to be part of the next wave of AI smartphones and expand into new markets. In April, the company said it acquired the generative AI division of Vietnam-based company VinAI to improve research and development and accelerate the creation of advanced solutions for smartphones, PCs, vehicles and other products. Qualcomm also recently purchased connected vehicle technology firm Autotalks to advance its smart mobility segment. Last year, Qualcomm added to its portfolio, expanding its internet-of-things capabilities. Qualcomm, known for its Snapdragon processors used for gaming, cameras and audio, is also seeking to be a larger player in the expansion of AI-driven data centers. The company's next-generation processors Oryon CPU and Hexagon NPU are a 'natural fit for data center workloads' and complementary to Alphawave's high-speed technologies, Cristiano Amon, president and CEO of Qualcomm, said in a statement. The pending deal is a milestone for Alphawave as it looks to expand its customer base, unlock growth opportunities and drive technological innovation. Qualcomm primarily owns or leases manufacturing facilities across China, Germany and Singapore, according to its latest annual report dated Sept. 29, 2024. It also has sales, administrative and R&D centers in the United States, India and China. The company saw revenue grow 17% in the quarter ending in March to nearly $11 billion compared to last year. It also saw net income grow 21% to $2.8 billion as it navigated tariff headwinds.
