Reolink partners with Home Assistant for local privacy upgrades

Techday NZ29-04-2025

Reolink has established a partnership with Home Assistant to offer users enhanced privacy and interoperability when integrating Reolink devices within local smart home ecosystems.
With this collaboration, most Reolink cameras, with the exception of 4G models, now support processing of video feeds, artificial intelligence alerts, and device controls entirely within home networks.
This approach is designed to provide users with greater autonomy and data privacy by reducing reliance on external cloud servers.
Fabrice Klohoun, Marketing Communications Director at Reolink, stated, "Security should adapt to users, not the other way around."
"By partnering with Home Assistant, we're ensuring that users can integrate Reolink devices into their smart homes with complete control, privacy, freedom and reliability."
The partnership makes Reolink a platinum-tier partner of Home Assistant, which is the highest level of partnership classification available within the platform.
The designation reflects a commitment to seamless integration, reliable performance, and prompt user support without risking privacy or experiencing system overloading.
Home Assistant is known for its privacy-first architecture and local operational capabilities, allowing users to coordinate and automate a large variety of smart devices without dependence on cloud-based systems. According to Home Assistant, there are over one million active installations of the platform globally, and it supports integration with over 3,000 brands.
There are two main advantages highlighted as a result of the collaboration. The first is the enhanced privacy and flexibility arising from local network operation.
By keeping data and video streams within a user's private network, owners maintain sole control and reduce security risks related to external access or vulnerabilities often associated with cloud services.
The second advantage is the potential for seamless integration with thousands of brands, enabling users to create bespoke smart home security automations.
For example, the press release notes that pressing a Reolink Battery Doorbell could automatically activate outdoor lights and secure a gate via a smart lock through the Home Assistant platform. This level of cross-device connectivity is aimed at providing customisable and convenient security options for smart home enthusiasts.
Miranda Bishop, Partnership Manager at the Open Home Foundation, said, "We're thrilled to welcome the first cameras to the 'Works With Home Assistant Program' via Reolink."
"Reolink's commitment to a top-quality, locally-focused integration is a real line in the sand. It shows a true understanding of users' desire for private and secure camera options that work seamlessly in a Smart Home."
As a platinum-tier partner, Reolink assures that device integrations will feature faster updates, consistent technical support, and no additional delay or compromise to user privacy.
This aligns with Reolink's stated aim to enable flexibility, reliability, and a user-centric experience in home security solutions.
The majority of Reolink products, excluding 4G-enabled models, are set to benefit from these capabilities. Users interested in integrating their Reolink cameras with Home Assistant will be able to do so, taking advantage of the privacy and interoperability enhancements now available through this partnership.

Morocco Receives First Oshkosh M-ATV Armored Vehicles for Desert Units

Doha – The Royal Armed Forces (FAR) have recently taken delivery of their first fleet of M-ATV Standard Base (SXB) tactical armored vehicles manufactured by the American company Oshkosh Defense. These vehicles are specifically designed to equip ground forces deployed in the Saharan and eastern regions of the country. According to converging reports, the port of Casablanca received a special shipment, with the vehicles appearing in recent pictures circulating across military forums. The armored vehicles combine mobility, ballistic protection, and operational capability in asymmetric environments. The delivery is part of the Special Defense Acquisition Fund (SDAF) established by the Pentagon and the US State Department to finance the purchase of defense equipment and services for transfer to allied partners and international organizations. The M-ATV vehicles, in service with the US Army since 2009, are equipped with Plasan composite armor compliant with STANAG 4569 level 4/3b/4 standards, providing effective resistance against 14.5 mm caliber fire, 8-kilogram anti-tank mines, and artillery fragments at a distance of 30 meters. These protection features ensure crew safety in high-risk contexts, particularly during operations in unstable areas. Each of these vehicles can be equipped with 7.62 mm M240 machine guns, 12.7 mm M2 heavy machine guns, 40 mm Mk19 automatic grenade launchers, or BGM-71 TOW anti-tank missile launchers. This weapons diversity allows field units to adapt to different threats and engage various targets effectively. Under the hood, the Caterpillar C7 turbocharged diesel engine delivers 370 horsepower, coupled with an Allison 3500SP six-speed automatic transmission. The Oshkosh TAK-4 independent suspension, combined with a robust design, allows these armored vehicles to reach a maximum speed of 105 km/h on roads while ensuring excellent maneuverability on rough terrain. In parallel, Morocco has also ordered HET A1 heavy logistics tractors equipped with specialized 635NL trailers, with delivery expected from summer 2025. Designed for moving oversized military equipment, these heavy transport vehicles are powered by a 700-horsepower Caterpillar C18 engine and feature a robust transmission system. 'We are proud to support the Kingdom in structuring its logistics capabilities by providing high-tonnage tractors for transporting the heaviest equipment,' Pat Williams, Oshkosh Defense's program director, said at the time of the official announcement in September 2024. 'This order reflects the confidence in our expertise in tactical mobility and advanced ground support.' The HET A1 tractors are equipped with two high-capacity winches, each capable of pulling nearly 25 tons, and benefit from advanced suspension and modular protections according to the Long-Term Armor Strategy (LTAS) doctrine. These features guarantee the safety of equipment and crews, even in hostile and complex environments. The M-ATV SXB version received by the FAR is the basic variant, while a distinct model intended for special forces—designated M-ATV SXF—is characterized by several structural differences not yet included in the contracts notified to Morocco. The M-ATVs will reinforce the Brimoto (motorized brigades) units deployed in the country's Saharan and eastern regions. Tags: Moroccan MilitaryRoyal Armed Forces (FAR)

Morocco Launches Repartition Process for Women Held in Syria

Moroccan authorities have reportedly initiated an administrative process requiring families to complete repatriation forms for their relatives held in northeastern Syrian camps. These include the infamous Al-Roj and Al-Hol camps, which are under Kurdish control and currently host around 8,000 people from 55 different countries—mostly families of former ISIS fighters. Currently, at least 476 Moroccans remain stranded in Syria, including 103 women and 285 children. This long-neglected issue is resurfacing in the wake of a major diplomatic shift between Morocco and Syria following the ousting of the Bashar al-Assad regime in December. This development offers long-awaited hope for women and children who have been trapped in these camps under dire humanitarian conditions. Families and human rights advocates have lamented Moroccan authorities for years of inaction with many calling for a phased repatriation process that prioritizes the most vulnerable. While some activists urged for a security-focused, case-by-case assessment—citing concerns about extremist affiliations—others argued that women and children should be approached differently, recognizing that many were coerced or manipulated into joining ISIS or living in exile. Signs of deepening Morocco-Syria normalization The renewed ties between Morocco and Syria have been marked by significant diplomatic gestures, including the closure of the Polisario Front's office in Damascus and King Mohammed VI's decision to reopen Morocco's embassy there after nearly 13 years. The embassy's reopening was officially announced in May, signaling a major foreign policy realignment. Mohammed VI conveyed the decision in a letter to Syria's interim President, Ahmed Al-Sharaa, which was read by Moroccan foreign minister Nasser Bourita during the 34th Arab League Summit in Baghdad. The letter reaffirmed Morocco's solidarity with Syria's territorial integrity and national sovereignty, while expressing support for the Syrian people's aspirations for freedom, security and stability. This diplomatic thaw has brought renewed attention to unresolved humanitarian concerns—chief among them, the repatriation of Moroccan nationals held in Syrian camps and prisons. According to a report by the Tetouan-based North Observatory of Human Rights, 38% of Moroccan jihadists who joined ISIS in 2015 were women. The report also emphasized how ISIS often targeted Moroccan women with emotionally manipulative messages, aiming to recruit them alongside their husbands and children, seizing the strategic role women have played in persuading entire families to join the group.
