My biggest problems as a high school teacher ― none were the school's fault

Yahoo19-05-2025

Here we go! It's the obligatory but all-important EDUCATION column. But let's skip the ivory tower talk. I'm writing as a foot soldier ― a teacher who's been in the trenches.
According to the National Center for Education Statistics, women now make up roughly 60% of the college population. It's one of several reminders that young men are falling behind. But this column isn't just about boys. It's about raising the tide for all boats.
Here were the four biggest problems I faced as a high school teacher:
1. Smartphones
2. Absenteeism
3. Sleep deprivation
4. Incomplete homework
Let's pause to acknowledge something: Policing these issues isn't the school's job ― it's the parents'. Warning — Put on your bib. On the menu is humble pie.
Please, please, please read on.
According to Statista, 95% of teenagers now own a smartphone. (Oddly, only 90% of adults do.) These weapons of mass distraction should be regulated with the same urgency we apply to gun safety. While Oklahoma's new Bell-to-Bell-No-Cell law may reduce screen time during school hours, the rest is on parents.
Next up: Attendance. According to the Oklahoma State Department of Education, 1 in 5 students is chronically absent, meaning they miss at least 10% of the school year. Parents, it's your job to get your kids to the school's front doors every morning. And guess what? There's a free Uber-like service already in place. It's called the school bus.
More: Worried about porn in libraries? Do you know what your child is looking at on their phone?
If your child is sleeping through class, they're effectively absent. Kids are young mammals. And all young mammals need sleep. What's your household policy? A.) Lights out and phones off, or B.) Midnight scroll-a-thons and TikTok marathons?
As for homework, there's a direct correlation between doing it and succeeding in the classroom. Do parents need to be tutors? Absolutely not. There are hundreds of excellent YouTube videos on every subject. But someone still needs to proctor the homework habit.
While I have your attention, the icing on the cake would be weed-free, polite kids who come to school with an attitude to learn. These are your family's representatives ― not the school's.
Now, schools ― it's your turn. You've been entrusted with educating the next generation of CEOs, community leaders and public servants. Even the future president of the United States is a student somewhere. The stakes couldn't be higher.
Every other year, the NAEP issues the 'Nation's Report Card,' testing fourth- and eighth-graders nationwide in reading and math. Contrary to popular belief, it does not rank states 1–50. But here's how Oklahoma performed:
Reading proficiency ― fourth grade: 23% (national average: 30%); eighth grade: 20% (national average: 29%)
Math proficiency ― fourth grade: 31% (national average: 39%); eighth grade: 17% (national average: 27%)
If you must know how Oklahoma ranks nationally, try 43rd, 48th and 49th ― per U.S. News & World Report, EdWeek and the Annie E. Casey Foundation, respectively.
Rather than focus on the fundamentals of reading and math, too many decision-makers seem more interested in sparking culture wars with trigger words like "woke agenda," "Bibles" and "terrorists." It's like jangling keys to distract from what really matters. God forbid educators hold themselves accountable.
More: I'm a former high school teacher. We need DEI, but discourse must center on civility | Opinion
And here's a stat you don't hear much about: According to the Oklahoma Council of Public Affairs, per-student spending has risen from $9,067 in 2017 to $13,736 in 2024. That's a 51% increase! Even accounting for temporary federal COVID relief (which ended last September), that's significant.
All the money went to teacher pay and smaller classrooms. I'm JOKING!
State schools Superintendent Ryan Walters and school districts, when ― if ever –― does the buck stop with you?
After 38 years in Los Angeles, K. John Lee recently boomeranged back to his Oklahoma roots. He is a financier, real estate investor, former high school teacher and a father of two young men.

This Is Why Doctor Who Fans Aren't All Convinced That Billie Piper Is Really The New Doctor

Doctor Who fans across the world were gagged on Saturday night when Billie Piper made an unexpected return to the franchise. After weeks of speculation about whether Ncuti Gatwa's time as The Doctor was coming to an end in the not-too-distant future, the most recent finale saw his character regenerating, after two seasons at the helm of the Tardis. What few could have foreseen would be that his character would regenerate into what appears to be a new incarnation of The Doctor, played by Billie Piper. Billie Piper IS the new Doctor 💙💫 # — Andrew McBride (@andrewmcb) May 31, 2025 Billie, of course, already has a long history with Doctor Who, starring in the role of Rose Tyler when the reboot first began airing 20 years ago. The Olivier winner's unexpected appearance led to a wide array of pretty much every reaction possible on social media, and a slew of headlines hailing her arrival as The Sixteenth Doctor. However, other fans are not convinced it's as simple as that. At the end of the first season of the Doctor Who revival, Rose ended up absorbing the heart of Tardis, becoming a new omniscient entity known as 'Bad Wolf'. Billie most recently appeared in Doctor Who for its 50th anniversary special, this time playing a different being altogether, known as 'The Moment'. So, given the fact that Billie has repeatedly popped up in the long-running sci-fi saga as a variety of different entities – not everyone in the Whovian fandom believes that her latest appearance necessarily means she's the new Doctor. Tellingly, her appearance in the final credits says simply 'introducing Billie Piper' rather than 'introducing Billie Piper as The Doctor', which is traditionally the terminology used when ushering in a new incarnation of the Time Lord… I didn't see one of these yesterday with everyone from Modern Who so I made one myself. But, there's something missing on the last one… #DoctorWho#doctorwhospoilers#DoctorWhofinale#TheRealityWar#ncutigatwa#billiepiper# — 𝓛𝓲𝓼𝓪 (𝓗𝓪𝓻𝓻𝔂'𝓼 𝓥𝓮𝓻𝓼𝓲𝓸𝓷)💌🍒🍉🥝 (@LisasBeautySpot) June 1, 2025 Now did they forget to put Billie Piper as The Doctor or is there something else going on… — ᏝᏋᏇᎥᏕ (@SalamiSandwich4) May 31, 2025 Okay but where is the 'as the Doctor' in the credits # — beth 🫧🧚🏻✨🪩🌷 (@itsmebethh_) May 31, 2025 The fact that this does not have the words 'as the Doctor' is going to fuel a gazillion over-monetised clickbait YouTube takes between now and the start of the next series. # — Russell Merryman (@merryarty) May 31, 2025 Everyone failing to notice that Billie Piper was not 'introduced' as the Doctor in the credits, just as Billie Piper. She's clearly not the Doctor but some Bad Wolf shenanigans # — Horror Enjoyer (@TjHArtwork) May 31, 2025 call me deluded but billie posted this emphasising rose and the credits make no mention of the doctor when normally it always says introducing x as the doctor ???? are we being conned # — becky | dw era (@rinaswarkles) May 31, 2025 WHATTTTTBillie Piper is the 16th Doctor Billie Piper has played the famous Rose Tyler, the bad wolf and NOW the Doctor WELCOME BACK TO THE SHOW # — Safe Space Who (@SafeSpaceDrWho) May 31, 2025 The lack of 'as The Doctor' discourse will power the fandom for a decade # — Ryan Love (@RyanJL) May 31, 2025 BILLIE PIPER IS THE 16TH DOCTORNO SHES NOTYES SHE ISfor the next 2 years omfg let me out of this hell — clara oswald akgae (@oswinfilms) June 1, 2025 Our favourite post of them all, though, has to be this one… #DoctorWho Billie Piper predicting her own regeneration 16 years ago in the music video for her single, "Because We Want To"! — Alan 🇵🇱 | JUSTYNA ❤️🩹 (@ThatAlann) June 1, 2025 After the episode aired, Billie teased: 'It's no secret how much I love this show, and I have always said I would love to return to the Whoniverse as I have some of my best memories there, so to be given the opportunity to step back on that Tardis one more time was just something I couldn't refuse, but who, how, why and when, you'll just have to wait and see...' Showrunner Russell T Davies also said: 'Billie once changed the whole of television, back in 2005, and now she's done it again! 'It's an honour and a hoot to welcome her back to the TARDIS, but quite how and why and who is a story yet to be told. After 62 years, the Doctor's adventures are only just beginning!' The Doctor has previously regenerated into a familiar face once before, when Jodie Whittaker's Thirteenth became a new version of the Time Lord, played by David Tennant in his second stint in charge of the Tardis. It's not yet clear whether a new season of Doctor Who is currently on the cards, with tabloid speculation about the show being 'rested' at the end of its latest run. Last month, a BBC spokesperson told HuffPost UK: 'As we have previously stated, the decision on season three will be made after season two airs and any other claims are just pure speculation.' 'Targeted terror attack' in Colorado - reports of several victims

The FBI says it is investigating a "targeted terror attack" in Colorado - with reports a man threw petrol bombs at people at a pro-Israel event. FBI Director Kash Patel said agents were on the scene and working with local law enforcement. Witnesses told US media the attacker threw Molotov cocktails at people doing a walk to remember Israeli hostages in Gaza. A male suspect is in custody. Local police said there were "several victims" and a large part of the downtown area had been cordoned off. Police chief Steve Redfearn said it happened around 1.26pm local time and initial reports were that "people were being set on fire". He said some victims were in hospital and injuries ranged from "very serious" to "minor". "When we arrived we encountered multiple victims that were injured, with injuries consistent with burns," Mr Redfearn told the media. He said a suspect had been pointed out and taken into custody without incident. "This area is not safe yet and we're dealing with a vehicle of interest," he added. Mr Redfearn said it happened as a "group of pro-Israel people" were taking part in a peaceful demonstration - but that the motive was unconfirmed and it was too early to call it a terror attack. In an earlier post on X, police said the incident is believed to have happened at 13th and Pearl streets. Woman Tracks Dating App Matches Across the Country in a ‘Man Catalog' (Exclusive)

Caitlin Trask created a "man catalog" to better understand her potential matches across the United States Once she compiles all her data, she will go to the city with the most potential matches and meet them in person Her TikTok video of her "man catalog" went viral, amassing 530,000 viewsCaitlin Trask is putting together a dating science experience. Trask, 32, keeps a spreadsheet of all the men she's matched with on Hinge, tracking things like their age, height, job, and any interesting information shared on their dating profiles. Trask tells PEOPLE exclusively it's a way to figure out what city has the highest percentage of people she would be compatible with. The idea was inspired by one of her coworkers, who found her fiancé by going to different states and different countries for a month at a time. She would set her dating apps to that location and go on dates with different men there. Trask decided to give it a shot after struggling to find romantic connections in Denver, where she lives. Now, Trask sets her dating apps to different cities to see who she can match with, and catalogs them in her spreadsheet. Along with general information about each person, such as their religion and political affiliation, she also indicates whether or not she finds them attractive and their communication style. 'Most guys that I am finding are my usual type, which means they have curly hair, good smiles and interesting prompts in their profile," she says. "Someone who it seems like I could have a fun conversation with is what I'm generally finding.' As an 'analytical person,' Trask says it's interesting seeing different patterns pop up in her data. One, most notably, is that she's matched with only men over 6 feet 2 inches in Boston, despite her online peers joking that they haven't found any tall men in Massachusetts. Trask shared her man catalog on TikTok, and the video went viral, amassing over 530,00 views. Most of the reactions to her video have been positive, with many asking her to share her template. After gathering enough data, Trask plans to make charts to better understand which city has the highest percentage of people she would be compatible with. She's already tested out the experiment in New York City, Boston, San Diego, and Austin. 'The ultimate goal is to visit the places where I find there seem to be the most single men that I'm aligned with, and visit there and see if anything comes of it,' Trask shares.
