Record-challenging heat on deck before more active weather conditions
SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) — Happy Saturday, it's a blazing hot start to the weekend with temperatures even warmer than yesterday!
That'll translate to highs in the low to mid 90s for most Utahns, 80s in higher terrain, and another day well into the triple-digits for Washington County. Both Salt Lake City and St. George will come within a degree or two of the daily heat records. St George's record of 105° was set way back in 1910 while Salt Lake's record of 95° was set in 1997.
By Sunday we start to see a shift in the weather pattern down south while northern Utah stays hot. Southern Utah will drop by about 10° with highs in the 80s, 90s for hot spots. Isolated afternoon thunderstorms could start popping up in southern Utah's higher terrain and the West Desert on Sunday, and by the evening there's a decent chance southern and central Utah valleys will join in the wet weather. Northern Utah will have similar temperatures with a forecasted high of 95° in Salt Lake City, which if hit, will break the old record by a single degree set back in 2020.
On Monday, moisture pushes further into the Beehive State bringing scattered thunderstorms to southern, central, and eastern Utah, but they'll be more isolated in nature towards the north. In addition to wetter weather, we'll also see cooler temperatures falling into the 70s for most, and 80s for the typical warm areas. On Tuesday, lingering moisture could spell a few more showers in northern Utah, but eastern and southern Utah keep isolated showers locked in.

15-year-old South Jordan girl missing since April found alive
SOUTH JORDAN, Utah (ABC4) — A South Jordan teen who has been missing since April 21 has been found, according to police. Officer Shaun Becker with South Jordan Police Department (SJPD) told that 15-year-old is found, alive and healthy. She is currently with Colorado Springs Police. Becker said she showed up there at some point Sunday evening. Police confirm she is in good health and is safe. Salt Lake Police Officer charged with stalking ex-girlfriend
Charges are allegations only. All arrested persons are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. SALT LAKE CITY, Utah (ABC4) — A current Salt Lake City Police Officer has been charged after being accused of stalking his ex-girlfriend. Todd Goodsell, 40, was charged with Stalking a Current or Former Cohabitant, a third-degree felony, on May 19, after allegedly stalking an ex-girlfriend he used to live with. According to court documents, the alleged victim broke up with Goodsell in November 2024. But he continued to reach out to her over various social media apps, using numerous profiles and at least 10 different phone numbers, including his work phone. Documents also show the victim told Goodsell several times to stop reaching out. The victim ended up blocking him on social media, moving to a new location and getting a new phone and email address. The Salt Lake County District Attorney notes in the documents that they believe there is clear evidence of danger to the alleged victim, citing concerning emails. The victim told Sandy Police she was concerned that the stalking would get worse and her life would be in danger and possibly end. The Salt Lake City Police Department released a statement on behalf of Chief Brian Redd, saying: 'The arrest of any police officer is a serious matter and is treated as such by our department. As with any person, this employee is entitled to due process under the law, as well as an administrative process that will determine whether any department or city policy or procedure violations occurred. We will respect and closely follow court proceedings. It is important to remember that an individual allegation does not define our department. Our employees consistently demonstrate professionalism, integrity, and a strong commitment to public service. I have full confidence that our employees will continue to carry out their duties with the professionalism and commitment our community expects and deserves.' Goodsell has been a Patrol Officer with SLCPD since 2019. He is currently on paid administrative leave. There are spoilers ahead. You might want to solve today's puzzle before reading further! It's the Muppet Show! Constructor: Justin Werfel Editor: Anna Gundlach ALAN (16A: "Galaxy Quest" actor Rickman) Galaxy Quest is a 1999 movie that parodies and pays homage to sci-fi movies and TV series and their fandoms. In the movie, fans of a fictional cult TV series, Galaxy Quest, become involved in an interstellar conflict with aliens who think the series is a documentary. ALAN Rickman portrays Alexander Dane, the ship's science officer on the fictional series, who is a member of an alien species known for superhuman intelligence, and whose catchphrase is "By Grabthar's Hammer, by the Suns of Warvan, you shall be avenged!" Although I know ALAN Rickman, and so was able to figure out the answer here, I was not familiar with this movie. In learning about Galaxy Quest, I discovered that scenes of the alien planet were filmed at Goblin Valley State Park in Utah. My husband and I have been to that park. It's an amazing place, and with its red rock hoodoos (rock formations) it does look a bit alien. GONZO JOURNALISM (35A: Hunter S. Thompson's reporting style) GONZO JOURNALISM is a non-objective style of reporting that centers personal experience and emotion rather than the detached style of traditional JOURNALISM. Hunter S. Thompson (1937-2005) was a journalist and author. For his 1967 book, Hell's Angels: A Strange and Terrible Saga, he spent a year living with the Hells Angels motorcycle club in order to write a first-hand account of the experience. In 1970, Hunter S. Thompson wrote an article for Scanlan's Monthly titled "The Kentucky Derby is Decadent and Depraved." DUSTS (40A: Does a housecleaning task) My husband and I do a fairly good job of working together to keep our house clean. If you visit any of the Hawaiian islands, you're likely to receive LEIS. PITA (11D: Bread served with hummus) and ATE (12D: Had some hummus) It's fun to see hummus linking these two consecutive clues together. PITA is making back-to-back puzzle appearances, as we saw it yesterday clued as [Pocketed bread for souvlaki]. MONA (33D: "___ Lisa") Leonardo da Vinci's painting MONA Lisa is on display at the Louvre in Paris, France. BLUE SKIES (34D: Jazz standard that describes sunny weather) The jazz standard "BLUE SKIES" was written by Irving Berlin in 1926. The song was written (as a last-minute addition) for the Rodgers and Hart musical Betsy. Although the musical wasn't much of a success, the song became a hit. It has been sung by numerous artists over the years, including Bing Crosby and Danny Kaye for the 1954 movie White Christmas. "BLUE SKIES, smilin' at me / Nothin' but BLUE SKIES do I see..." RIVER (44D: Tigris or Euphrates) The Tigris RIVER and the Euphrates RIVER both begin in the Armenian highlands of Turkey and then flow, in a somewhat parallel fashion, down through valleys and gorges in a south-easterly fashion before joining and discharging into the Persian Gulf. As a tremendous fan of The Muppet Show, I thoroughly enjoyed this theme. The Muppets we're meeting in today's puzzle are: WALDORF - one of the two elderly men (along with Statler) who sit in the balcony of the show and heckle people, GONZO - a Muppet of ambiguous species who is known for his passion for performing stunts, and ANIMAL - the wild and frenetic drummer of the Muppet band Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem.
