BAKU: Kuwait has reiterated its unwavering commitment to enhancing international cooperation in the fight against corruption, particularly in addressing transnational crimes, as part of its political approach rooted in transparency and accountability across institutional work. This affirmation came during a statement by Deputy Chairman of the Public Authority for Combating Corruption (Nazaha), Advisor Nawaf Al-Mehmel, to Kuwait News Agency (KUNA) on the sidelines of the sixth meeting of the Global Operational Network of Law Enforcement Authorities Against Corruption (GLOBE-EYE), currently taking place in Baku, Azerbaijan.
Al-Mehmel underlined that Kuwait's active participation in the forum aligns with Nazaha's ongoing efforts to showcase the country's achievements on the international stage and reinforce its dedication to global best practices in anti-corruption. He emphasized Kuwait's full support for the international zero-tolerance approach to corruption and its commitment to engaging with key global frameworks, notably the United Nations Convention against Corruption.
Part of the 6th meeting of the Global Operational Network of Law Enforcement Authorities Against Corruption (GLOBE-EYE) in the Azerbaijani capital, Baku.
He noted that Nazaha maintains strong collaboration with specialized international and regional bodies, reflecting Kuwait's adherence to its international obligations through effective coordination. This, he added, enhances Kuwait's standing as a trusted partner in the global fight against corruption. Highlighting the State of Kuwait's early involvement in the GLOBE-EYE initiative, Al-Mehmel stated that Nazaha was among the first institutions to join the network, taking part in its founding meetings and contributing to the drafting of its core charter. Nazaha also plays an active role in the network's technical teams, further consolidating Kuwait's position as a key player in global anti-corruption efforts.
He praised the network's contribution to facilitating the secure exchange of expertise and information among international law enforcement bodies, noting its vital role in supporting joint investigations and sharing sensitive data. He added that this year's meeting is of particular significance given the evolving challenges facing anti-corruption agencies, including the growing use of advanced technologies and artificial intelligence in financial crimes. Discussions at the meeting, he said, are focusing on adopting modern operational strategies and leveraging digital innovations to enhance institutional effectiveness in combating corruption.
Kuwait is participating in the GLOBE-EYE meetings, which run until May 23, with an official delegation headed by Al-Mehmel and including Minister Plenipotentiary Mahdi Al-Ajmi from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as well as international cooperation experts. Participants are exploring ways to boost international coordination in asset tracing and recovery, in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and efforts to combat organized financial crime. Nazaha's early membership in the network, launched by the United Nations in 2021, underscores its pivotal role in supporting technical teams and advancing the fight against cross-border corruption.— KUNA

Deadly Fire Rekindles Warnings Over Kuwait Expat Housing Conditions
KUWAIT CITY, Jun 1: A devastating fire broke out early Sunday morning in a residential building in Reggae area, killing six people and injuring five others, in an incident chillingly reminiscent of the deadly Al-Mangaf blaze in June 2024 that claimed 49 lives. The Kuwait Fire Force (KFF) confirmed that emergency teams were dispatched at 4:22 a.m. following a distress call reporting a fire in the building. Brigadier General Mohammed Al-Gharib, Director of Public Relations and Media at KFF, stated that units from Ardiya Industrial Area, Shuwaikh, and the Technical Rescue Department arrived at the scene within four minutes. The fire had engulfed two apartments on the fifth and sixth floors, which, according to Al-Gharib, had been illegally subdivided to house single male labourers. This overcrowding and unauthorised construction significantly worsened the blaze, he said. 'Firefighters launched evacuation efforts using ladders and stairwells, managing to rescue dozens of expats,' Al-Gharib stated. 'Three charred bodies were recovered at the scene, while seven people were taken to the hospital. Two later succumbed to their injuries.' The victims included individuals of Asian and African nationalities. Al-Gharib warned that violations such as unregulated room partitions, poor fire safety compliance, blocked escape routes, and a lack of fire-fighting equipment are recurring hazards that endanger lives and hamper emergency response. He urged property owners to strictly adhere to safety codes, particularly during the summer when fire incidents typically spike. Farwaniya Governor Sheikh Athbi Nasser Al-Sabah visited Farwaniya Hospital to check on the injured, offering condolences to the victims' families. He instructed authorities to investigate the cause of the fire and ensure full support for those affected. Praising the efforts of emergency responders, he also emphasised the urgent need for stricter enforcement of fire safety standards in residential buildings. The Ministry of Health reported that ten casualties were handled across several hospitals. Six were treated at Farwaniya Hospital, while two were referred to Al-Babtain Burns and Plastic Surgery Center. Four were also admitted to Al-Sabah Hospital. The Ministry activated its emergency response plan in coordination with ambulance services to ensure swift medical intervention. Dr. Abdullah Al-Fars, Assistant Undersecretary for Medical Support Services, conducted an on-site assessment, overseeing the provision of care and ensuring the availability of resources. This latest fire tragedy once again highlights critical safety lapses in worker accommodations and underlines the pressing need for regulatory reforms to prevent a repeat of past disasters.

Kuwait ramps up campaign for responsible energy use
KUWAIT CITY, June 1: The Ministry of Electricity, Water and Renewable Energy launched the third edition of the National Energy Saving Campaign (Waffer) on Sunday to promote awareness of electricity and water conservation, aimed at protecting resources, reducing waste, and ensuring environmental and economic sustainability. At a press conference held at the Government Communication Center, Undersecretary and Chairman of the Electricity and Water Consumption Rationalization Committee, Dr. Adel Al-Zamel, said the campaign focuses on encouraging a culture of responsible energy use. He emphasized that the initiative aligns with national policy goals and has broad government support. Al-Zamel highlighted the increasing rates of electricity and water consumption in Kuwait, which he said have led to growing environmental and economic pressures. He urged government bodies, institutions, and individuals to reassess their consumption habits and support efforts to reduce waste. He added that the campaign is a shared national responsibility and a call to adopt rational use as a value, moderation as a strength, and cooperation as a pathway to sustainability. Al-Zamel noted that Kuwait's per capita energy consumption remains high compared to other countries, calling for increased media efforts to promote responsible water use. He expressed confidence in the campaign's success through collective participation and commended government agencies for their efforts to reduce energy use in public buildings. Engineers Khadija Bushehri and Mohammed Al-Hattab, leaders of the Ministry's awareness team, presented a media campaign designed to encourage responsible energy behavior and engage both public and private sectors in conservation efforts. They said the campaign also promotes energy-efficient products and practices. A children's awareness video featuring cartoon characters "Kahroob" and "Qatura" was also shown to introduce energy-saving concepts at an early age.
