Karnataka High Court seeks Kamal Haasan apology update in Thug Life case hearing
The Karnataka High Court on Friday heard a petition related to the release of the Tamil film starring Kamal Haasan, Thug Life, with Justice Nagaprasanna questioning once again whether the actor had apologised for his controversial remarks.'Has Kamal Haasan not apologised yet? Senior advocate S Basavaraj, representing the Parishat, said, 'Kamal Haasan made a stupid statement,' and argued that the words 'Karnataka' and 'Kannada' are deeply rooted in ancient texts and traditions.
The counsel representing Raajkamal Films, the film production banner founded by the actor, objected to the use of the word 'stupid,' saying it was being taken offensively and that they would be filing objections to the Parishat's petition.The Kannada Sahitya Parishat's advocate, meanwhile, expressed regret over the 'stupid' comment.The court adjourned the hearing to June 20 and reiterated its earlier directive not to proceed with the film's release until further orders. Recently, the makers filed a plea in the court seeking protection and claimed that the state government has not filed even a single FIR as of now against groups who are openly threatening them. 'A fringe group issued threats of large-scale violence, including the burning of theatres and attacks against members of the Tamil linguistic minority residing in Karnataka. Despite these open and public threats, not a single FIR was registered, nor was any prosecution initiated by the State Government. On the contrary, the government appeared to adopt the position of the very fringe elements that issued those threats. We are aggrieved by this inaction and are now before the Supreme Court, seeking enforcement of this Court's past directions," Advocate A Velan said, as quoted by Hindustan Times. The plea of the Thug Life makers argued that such inaction violates the fundamental right to freedom of speech and expression under Article 19(1)(a) of the Constitution. The Supreme Court has now sought the state government's response on this. 'Actor Shivarajkumar is my family living in another state. That's why he is here. That's why when I started my speech, I said 'my life and my family is Tamil'. Your language (Kannada) was born out of Tamil. So you are included in that line," he said. The actor's remarks quickly went viral and triggered backlash from pro-Kannada groups in Karnataka. The film was also banned in Karnataka, and a complaint was also filed against the actor. Later, Haasan also wrote a letter to the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce (KFCC) and claimed that his comment was 'misinterpreted'. 'It pains me that my statement at the Thug Life audio launch, spoken out of genuine affection for the legendary Dr. Rajkumar's family, especially Shiva Rajkumar has been misunderstood and taken out of context. My words were intended only to convey that we are all one and from the same family and not to diminish Kannada in any way. Nagarjuna addresses changing trends in Tollywood and Bollywood: 'It can't be fantastic all the time'
Picture Credit: Facebook Veteran actor Nagarjuna who is gearing up for the release of the upcoming film 'Kuberaa', starring Dhanush in the lead, recently weighed in on the ongoing comparisons between Bollywood and the southern film industries. During an interview with Galatta Plus, Nagarjuna shared that he believes these trends are cyclical, and no industry remains at the top forever. When asked if Bollywood has lost it's spark in contrast to a booming southern film industry, the actor dismissed it saying, "These narratives keep changing." He explained that it's like an actor or director having a bad time of 4-5 years. He further explained, "Everything cumulative probably happened there, and films didn't work. And then they say the whole film industry is gone. In my time, in the Telugu film industry, it has happened four times. And I believe the fourth time will come now, very soon. I'm very sure, it's my hunch." Nagarjuna was also asked about filmmaker Naga Vamsi's recent prediction of a "bloodbath" in Tollywood due to changing audience tastes and underperforming films.
