Kurtley Beale among first 5 selected for Indigenous squad to play the British and Irish Lions

Associated Press17 hours ago

MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) — The British and Irish Lions will see the familiar face of Wallaby veteran Kurtley Beale on their Australian tour, albeit later than expected.
The 95-test backline utility had been set to play for the Perth-based Western Force against the Lions in the tour-opening match Saturday but was ruled out with hamstring injury and replaced by current Wallaby squad member Ben Donaldson.
Instead, Beale was named Thursday as one of the first five players for the First Nations and Pasifika XV team set to play against the Lions in Melbourne on July 22. The Lions are in Australia for nine games including tests on July 19, 26 and Aug. 2.
Beale, who hit form for the Force this year after returning from a long-term Achilles injury, played in Australia's 2-1 series loss to the Lions in 2013.
Rob Leota, who has played 21 tests for the Wallabies, most recently at the 2023 Rugby World Cup, was also named to the Indigenous team along with Fiji-born back rower Seru Uru. Also named were Charlie Gamble, a flanker for the New South Wales Waratahs, and Andy Muirhead, who has scored 180 points in 108 games for the ACT Brumbies since 2017.
Former Australia backrower Toutai Kefu, who helped the Wallabies win the 1999 World Cup and the 2001 series against the British and Irish Lions and has been head coach of Tonga's national team, will coach the First Nations and Pasifika team. The remainder of the squad is yet to be confirmed.
Lions utility back Elliot Daly knows Beale better than most of his teammates. Beale played with Daly at English club Wasps in 2016-17 and they formed a strong friendship.
'If he didn't get injured in that semifinal against Leicester in 2017 I think we would have won the title,' Daly said. 'He came at a time when we were playing attacking rugby and he slotted in really well.'
The Lions, made up of players from Ireland, Scotland, Wales and England, lost 28-24 to Argentina last week in a warmup for the tour. They will play the Wallabies in tests on July 19 in Brisbane, July 26 in Melbourne and Aug. 2 in Sydney.
The Australian section of the tour kicks off this weekend on the west coast, where Donaldson will join five other current Wallabies in the Force lineup.
'Any chance you get to play against the Lions, you probably take it with both hands,' Donaldson said.

Cooper Cronk calls out Lachie Galvin move that backfired on Bulldogs teammate

Cooper Cronk has highlighted how Lachie Galvin's presence on the field contributed to Nathan Cleary's match-winning try for the Panthers against the Bulldogs in Thursday night's NRL thriller. Galvin started on the bench but replaced Reed Mahoney with 28 minutes remaining. Dogs coach Cameron Ciraldo shuffled Galvin into the halves and moved Toby Sexton to hooker - a move that proved contentious and also backfired. The Bulldogs were leading 6-2 with Galvin on the bench, but the tide turned in the Panthers' favour when he was injected into the game. He let Cleary run straight past him just seconds after getting on the field - a line-break that seemed to swing the momentum towards the Panthers after the Bulldogs held the upper hand all night. In the very next set, Cleary produced a stunning play to charge down a Matt Burton kick before regathering and scoring what turned out to be the match-winning try. Speaking in commentary for Fox League, legendary halfback Cronk pointed out that Galvin being on the field made it easier for Cleary to produce his match-winning play. Because Galvin doesn't have as good a long-kicking game as Sexton, Cleary and the Panthers knew Burton would be kicking on the last. Rather than having to guess which side of the ruck the kick would come from, Cleary was 100 per cent it was going to Burton. "He is one of the smartest players in our game Nathan Cleary," Cronk said. "He realised Matt Burton is the No.1 kicker. Normally he does it with a pass or a kick, but this time he did it with his footy IQ. "The reason why he was able to isolate Matt Burton is when Galvin came onto the field, Burton becomes the main kicker out of their own end. It meant Cleary could get a head-start (on Burton) and pressure him." Speaking after the Panthers held on for an 8-6 win, Matty Johns also questioned why Ciraldo changed his spine in the middle of the game. "It's hard when you change a winning spine," he said. "They'll have to figure out what to do with Galvin moving forward." RELATED: Sam Burgess rejection could see Dolphins sign international star New club emerges to snare premiership-winning Panthers forward Despite the loss, Ciraldo was adamant it was the right call to inject Galvin. The 19-year-old looked likely whenever he touched the ball, but the Dogs weren't as polished as when Sexton was pulling the strings. "I thought it worked pretty well tonight," Ciraldo said in his press conference. "I like how it is working at the moment. Reed rips in, gets his work done, works himself to a standstill. "Toby going in there and shoring up the ruck and providing good service. And then Lachy comes on and can ask really good questions, which he did. I'm very happy with how it's going at the moment, don't see any reason to change it." But fans and pundits were quick to highlight how the game changed when Galvin came on. Daily Telegraph columnist 'The Oracle' wrote on social media: "Mahoney was playing well at dummy half and Sexton controlling things beautifully at 7. Galvin will undoubtedly be an asset in the future, but you can't tell me this isn't an unwanted disruption to a side coming first. They look clunky." Mahoney was playing well at dummy half & Sexton controlling things beautifully at will undoubtedly be an asset in the future , but you can't tell me this isn't an unwanted disruption to a side coming first. They look clunky. — The Oracle (@BigOtrivia) June 26, 2025 Am I alone in thinking the Dogs look worse with Galvin? — Ron (@ronstradamus1) June 26, 2025 I don't understand who Galvin thought Cleary was passing too 😂 — yeamannnn (@AMaoulaoui) June 26, 2025 Those Galvin "shifts" lost Canterbury the game. I have no idea what Gus or Matthew Johns or others have seen, but Galvin runs out of time so quickly, he plugs in the field and puts others under pressure. Like Burton late when he lost the ball #NRLPanthersBulldogs — Curtis Woodward (@woodward_curtis) June 26, 2025 Dogs have to bite the bullet & do whatever their plan is with Galvin now - not sure changing half your spine mid game every week is sustainable, there was a noticeable disruption to their flow & shape when he came on. #NRLPanthersBulldogs — Nathan (@SeaEagleSpur) June 26, 2025

Sheehan challenges Lions to match hosts' passion

Western Force v British and Irish Lions Date: Saturday, 28 June Venue: Optus Stadium, Perth Time: 11:00 BST Coverage: Live text commentary on the BBC Sport website Dan Sheehan has challenged his British and Irish Lions team-mates to match the passion of the Western Force underdogs in Saturday's tour opener in Australia. Sheehan will captain a Lions team with only two starters - Sione Tuipulotu and Tadhg Beirne - who were in the XV for the defeat by Argentina on Friday. Advertisement "I'm sure the Force will be 150% of what they usually are," said the 26-year-old Ireland hooker. "They will be flying into it and that bit of extra hunger can produce some powerful things. "They would have been eyeing this game up since they probably first stepped into that Western Force change room. It'll mean an awful lot to them. "But I don't want them to think that they're going to be hungrier than us. We have to demonstrate back our own mindset." Western Force were the lowest-ranked Australian side in this year's Super Rugby Pacific, but their head coach Simon Cron said much of their preparation had involved impressing on the players the magnitude of the opportunity. Advertisement "It's a once-in-a-lifetime for a lot of these guys," said Cron. "We sat as a group and had a bit of a yarn about how old were you 12 years ago [when the Lions last toured Australia], how old will you be 12 years from now. "That's the importance of this game and the special type of game that it is. They are under no illusion around that." Western Force's XV includes former Exeter scrum-half Nic White, while Ben Donaldson, who had originally been kept back with the Wallabies, has been brought in at full-back after veteran Kurtley Beale suffered a hamstring strain in training. Advertisement Sheehan, who led Ireland for the first time against Wales in this year's Six Nations, says that the quality in the Lions dressing room will make his job easier, rather than more intimidating. "You look around the room and [see] so many individuals who are more than capable of captaining this team, and that is something that probably eases the nerves a little bit," he said. "I don't have to make it too difficult, I just need to be myself. "I am quite a chill person, I feel like I have a good understanding of who I am and what excites me. I just sort of let these things happen in a weird way. I know that sounds like I am almost sat back, but I just don't over-think it really." Advertisement The Lions' schedule ramps up after Saturday's match, with the tourists playing the Queensland Reds on Wednesday. Fixtures against the Waratahs, Brumbies and an invitational Australian/New Zealand team follow before the first Test against the Wallabies on 19 July.
