The IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship is kicking off in Sweden and Denmark on Friday and a handful of Calgary Flames are there to represent their country.
Five Flames are currently on rosters at the tournament, along with head coach Ryan Huska, who is an assistant coach for Team Canada.
Defenceman Mackenzie Weegar is donning the maple leaf, representing Canada.
He finished the 2024-25 season tied for third in points on the Flames, notching eight goals and 39 assists for 47 points.
Forward Mikael Backlund and defender Rasmus Andersson are representing their home country of Sweden. Andersson was named the team's captain, while Backlund is an assistant.
Backlund finished the year with 15 goals and 17 assists. Andersson had 11 goals and 20 assists in 81 games but noted he was playing through a broken fibula down the stretch of the year.
Goaltender Dan Vladar also made the trip for the tournament to join Czechia's roster.
He started between the pipes in 29 games last year, winning 12, with a 2.80 goals-against average and a .898 save percentage.
2023 first-round pick Samuel Honzek was also selected to play for Slovakia.
The 20-year-old forward suited up in five games with the Flames last season but spent most of the year with the Calgary Wranglers in the AHL, putting up eight goals and 13 assists.
Zayne Parekh, the Flames' 2024 ninth-overall pick, joined Team Canada for their pre-tournament games, but was not included on the roster for the preliminary round.
The puck drop for Canada's first game against Slovakia is scheduled for 4:20 a.m. on Saturday morning.
Sweden takes on Slovakia at 12:20 p.m. on Friday, while Czechia faced off against Switzerland on Friday morning.
Canada is in Group A for the preliminary stage, along with Austria, Finland, France, Latvia, Slovakia, Slovenia and Sweden.
TSN is carrying every game of the world hockey championship, taking place in Stockholm, Sweden; and Herning, Denmark.

FLAMES RETOOL TRACKER: Imagining a future with Parekh and Brzustewicz on blue line
This is gonna be good. Article content That's what Calgary Flames defence prospects Hunter Brzustewicz and Zayne Parekh were thinking as they surveyed the scene at Climate Pledge Arena prior to an exhibition audition last fall. Article content Article content 'When we were in Seattle for the pre-season, I was sitting on the bench with Zayne and honestly we took a moment and we were like, 'This is unreal,'' Brzustewicz beamed. 'And it was just pre-season.' Article content This is gonna be good. Article content That's what Brzustewicz and Parekh were thinking months later as they bumped fists in Los Angeles prior to their NHL debuts, one having just completed his solo lap and the other about to step foot on the ice for that customary welcome whirl. Article content As Brzustewicz put it: 'Looking up at the bright lights in L.A., it was unbelievable … I think the first thing that I looked at was all the banners of the Lakers. That was a really cool moment for me.' Article content This is gonna be good. Article content That's what Flames fans are thinking as they envision a future — and a not-so-distant one — with both of these guys in prominent roles. If all goes well, it could someday be standard to see them finish 1-2 on the team in nightly ice time. Article content There is no debating Parekh's status as the Flames' top prospect. When you match junior scoring records that were set in the 1960s by the legendary Bobby Orr, the excitement tends to crank into overdrive. This 19-year-old star-in-the-making didn't exactly hush the hype when he buried a beauty deflection in his big-league debut. Article content Many folks would have Brzustewicz, 20, slotted second on the list of Calgary's most promising pipeline pieces. He is an X-factor in the retool plans because, if he can fulfil his potential, suddenly there's a fixture for the second pairing, too. Article content Article content While everybody was buzzing through the winter about what his buddy was doing in the OHL, Brzustewicz was making a positive impression as a first-year pro, really coming on strong as he started to feel more comfortable with the pace and pressure. Article content During a recent radio interview, Flames director of player development Ray Edwards suggested that Brzustewicz was the Wranglers' best defenceman over the final third of the season and raved that he 'makes tough plays look easy and makes a lot of them.' Article content Brzustewicz completed his first AHL campaign with 32 points, fifth among rookie rearguards on that stepping-stone circuit. Like his pal, he didn't look out of place in that April 17 eye-opener against the Kings in Los Angeles.

IIHF, PWHL not aligned over 2026 women's hockey worlds scheduling
The International Ice Hockey Federation has postponed announcing the host city of the 2026 women's world hockey championship. The IIHF introduced running a women's championship in the same year as an Olympic Games in 2022, but the arrival of the Professional Women's Hockey League has made scheduling the 2026 world championship thorny. The IIHF said in an email Monday the allocation of the 2026 women's championship was postponed until its semi-annual congress Oct. 3-4. The 2022 championship was held Aug. 25 to Sept. 4. In Herning and Frederikshavn, Denmark, after February's Olympic Games in Beijing. International Ice Hockey Federation women's committee chair Zsuzsanna Kolbenheyer said in April that March-early April for the women's championship is in the IIHF bylaws, and that Denmark's summer tournament was a one-off. "That was only for that year," Kolbenheyer said then. "We always wanted to put it back to the original dates." But the PWHL, entering its third season, does not want two long international breaks within weeks of each other. The Olympic Games in Milan-Cortina, Italy, run Feb. 6-22. "We've had ongoing discussions with the IIHF," PWHL executive vice-president of hockey operations Jayna Hefford said Friday during a conference call about league expansion. "We do not have a date for that event, location for that event. "We do know the Olympics are happening in February, but anything beyond that is not confirmed. So that's the information we have today, and we'll continue to work closely with the IIHF and various national federations." WATCH l U.S. dethrones Canada at 2025 women's hockey worlds: United States take down Canada in overtime to win women's hockey worlds gold 1 month ago Duration 2:13 Tessa Janecke was the benefactor of a bad turnover by the Canadians, as she buried a pass from Taylor Heise to clinch a 4-3 overtime victory against Canada. This gave the United States the win over their rivals for a third-consecutive women's world championships tournament. PWHL expanding by 2 teams Canada will host the 2027 women's championship. The PWHL's second season ran from Dec. 1, 2024 to May 26 when the Minnesota Frost defended the Walter Cup. Each team played 30 regular-season games. The league will expand by two clubs next season in Vancouver and Seattle. Kolbenheyer said during April's women's championship April 9-20 in Ceske Budejovice, Czech Republic that a survey was issued to the women's hockey community seeking opinions on world championship dates "but we decided at the council level that it would be too late to do any changes" to 2026. The international hockey calendar is crowded. It also includes the men's championship in May, the world under-20 men's championship in December-January, the women's under-18 championship in January and the men's under-18 championship in April. The IIHF also holds multiple lower-level divisional tournaments in those categories that promote and relegate countries. The NCAA's women's Frozen Four in mid-March also dictates the women's championship's timing.
