Steven Gerrard favourite for Championship job that would see him replace former team-mate as manager
STEVEN GERRARD is the bookies' favourite to become Middlesbrough's next manager.
The Liverpool legend has been out of work since leaving Al-Ettifaq in January.

He was linked with a return to Rangers but pulled out of the race before Russell Martin was appointed.
Instead his return to management could come at Championship side Middlesbrough.
If he gets the job he will succeed his former England team-mate Michael Carrick, who was sacked last week.
Gerrard, 45, is the bookies' favourite to take over at the Riverside Stadium, ahead of Rob Edwards and Steve Cooper.
It appears the former Three Lions star is keen on a return to the UK after an ill-fated spell in the Middle East.
Gerrard lasted just 18 months at Al-Ettifaq and won 23 of his 59 matches in charge.
That stint came after he was sacked at Aston Villa following a return of two wins in the opening 12 games of the 2022-23 Premier League season.
His best reign came at Rangers, where he oversaw the club's first league title for nine years in 2021.
He accumulated 102 points and went unbeaten in the Scottish Premier League, ending Celtic 's period of dominance.
Gerrard won 65 per cent of his games in charge at Ibrox.

Wigan Warriors legend Billy Boston to be first rugby league player knighted
For the first time in rugby league's 130 year history one of its greatest players will be knighted. Wigan Warriors legend Billy Boston will become the first person from his sport to be presented with a knighthood at a ceremony at Buckingham Palace. The 90-year-old, who was born in Wales, played on the wing at Wigan for 15 years after making the switch from rugby union to rugby league in 1953. He went on to score a record 478 tries in 487 games for the club winning the Challenge Cup three times as well as the Championship. Boston also had an impressive record for Great Britain scoring 24 tries in 31 test matches and in 1954 became the first non-white player selected to tour Australia and New Zealand. In 2000, he was given the freedom of Wigan and has three statues, in Wigan, Wales and at Wembley Stadium. Boston was awarded an MBE by Queen Elizabeth and now after a campaign led by his local Makerfield MP Josh Simons, he will be made a knight of the realm by King Charles. Wigan Warriors owner Mike Danson told the club's website: 'One of the biggest thrills in my ownership of Wigan Rugby League Club has been enjoying the company of Billy Boston. Without doubt Billy was a player who was – and still is – the biggest crowd favourite in Rugby League. 'He is my mum Jean's favourite player – they are of the same age! She remains in awe of the great man and his Rugby League legacy. 'I am therefore thrilled that at long last, Billy will be appointed as Rugby League's first Knight! A richly deserved honour which means this most humble of men, rightly receives at last, fitting recognition for his extraordinary efforts. Many congratulations to Billy, his wife Joan and the family on this magnificent achievement.'

Thomas Tuchel feels Club World Cup absence gives Liverpool and Arsenal advantage
Thomas Tuchel believes the demands of the Club World Cup on Manchester City and Chelsea will hand Liverpool and Arsenal a 'huge advantage' in next season's Premier League title race. The England head coach is trying to stay relaxed about any potential impact FIFA's new competition, which starts on Saturday, will have on his players, and his stated ambition to put a second star on the England shirt by winning next summer's World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico. However, the German is convinced the tournament will be pivotal for who wins the English league title next year, and will put the more rested Reds and Gunners in pole position. 'I think (the Club World Cup) will have a huge impact and it will give Liverpool and Arsenal a huge advantage in the next season to not be there,' Tuchel said. 'I think it will be a very nice experience for the players who are there to play this tournament for the first time, so I have mixed feelings about it. 'I decided not to worry too much, because why should I? It is a given, and no-one knows what will be the outcome of it or the effect. 'We will deal with the effect when the effect comes and let's see.' Nine of Tuchel's group for last Saturday's World Cup qualifier against Andorra and Tuesday night's friendly against Senegal are heading to the Club World Cup, but he insisted: 'There is not one player who says 'by the way, I would like to be on the bench and save myself for the Club World Cup'. They are hungry to play. 'The games are not the problem, it is just the amount of time that it occupies from the players, and they need a proper rest somewhere in this calendar which they hardly get.' One of those nine is Bayern Munich striker Harry Kane, who is set to captain England again at the City Ground in Nottingham. Twenty-four members of the squad trained at St George's Park on Monday, with Jude Bellingham absent due to his attendance at a family funeral. He was due to return to the camp later in the day.
