Idaho: seven people killed in highway crash near Yellowstone, police say
A pickup truck and a tour van collided on a highway leading to Yellowstone national park, leaving seven people dead and eight others injured, Idaho state police said.
The crash happened just before 7.15pm on Thursday near Henry's Lake state park in eastern Idaho, police said in a press release. The state park is roughly 16 miles (26km) west of Yellowstone.
Authorities have not said what led to the crash.
Both vehicles caught fire, the Idaho state police said in a press release. The driver of the Dodge Ram pickup and six people inside the Mercedes passenger van died. The van was carrying a tour group of 14 people, and the surviving occupants were taken to hospitals with injuries, police spokesman Aaron Snell said.
Air ambulances and emergency paramedics responded to the collision, which remains under investigation.
The Fremont county coroner's office had not released the names of those killed as of Friday morning. Police said officials were still working on notifying family members of those killed and injured, so the agency was not yet releasing the names, ages, hometowns or nationalities of the people involved.
Roger Merrill, 60, was driving home when he saw the flames engulfing the two vehicles as bystanders tried to care for survivors from the van on the side of the highway. Merrill said he often sees tourist vans on the highway that leads to Yellowstone.
'It is a very dangerous highway because it leads to the main entrance of Yellowstone national park,' he said. 'It's extremely busy.'
Merrill captured video of the wreckage with smoke blanketing the van. Due to the remote location, Merrill said he anxiously awaited the help of first responders.
'It took an unnervingly long time for help to arrive just because of the location,' he said.
The Idaho transportation department has identified the highway for safety improvements designed to reduce the severity of crashes, but the project is still in the research and planning phase.
That portion of the highway had an average of about 10,500 vehicles traveling it daily in 2023, according to the agency.

Russell discovers Canada GP penalty decision after being summoned to stewards
George Russell was forced to explain himself to the stewards on Friday but avoid any penalty in Canada despite not sticking to the race director's instructions George Russell has escaped with a warning after he was forced to explain himself to the stewards during Friday's practice session before the Canadian Grand Prix. The Mercedes driver used an escape road at Turn 14, but didn't comply totally with the race director's instructions. Russell was the quickest man on Friday as he set an impressive lap time in Montreal. However as he exited the pits for one of his runs the Brit was forced to take evasive action. After losing the rear at Turn 13 he ended up cutting the kerb at the following corner. The Mercedes star - who continues to face speculation over his future - was required to visit the stewards to explain his actions. In the past, misdemeanours in practice on a Friday have resulted in grid penalties, which would've been less than ideal. However Russell was only handed a warning as he explained his main motivation was to keep the car out of the wall but quickly clocked he had not followed the instructions. He apologised with the stewards saying their decision was "consistent with earlier decisions for similar infringements." Russell's actions didn't impact any of the other drivers on track nor was it deemed unsafe. A full statement from the FIA stewards read: "The Stewards heard from the driver of Car 63 (George Russell), team representative and reviewed video and in-car video evidence. The driver of Car 63 explained that he had just pitted for new tyres and at turn 13 he lost the rear of the car and had no alternative but to leave the track to the left of the orange kerb on the inside of turn 14. "He said that he was focussed on keeping the car off the wall and cut the orange line on the exit of turn 14. He said that he immediately realised that in so doing he had not complied with the instruction and apologised. No other cars were affected and the rejoining was not unsafe. George Russell raised hope of a first Mercedes win of the season after he finished fastest in second practice for the Canadian Grand Prix. The British driver, who took pole position in Montreal last year, edged out McLaren compatriot Lando Norris, with Kimi Antonelli underlining Mercedes' speed to set the third quickest time. The Monegasque crashed into the barrier on the entry to turn four and sustained significant damage to the left-hand side of his Ferrari. The force of the impact sent him sideways and across the other side of the chicane. 'F***,' said Leclerc on the radio. 'Sorry, I am in the wall. My bad. I should have gone straight, but I thought I would make the corner and I hit the wall.' Leclerc's survival cell on his Ferrari needed replacing which sidelined him for the remainder of the day. His accident marked an underwhelming day for Ferrari which will have done little to lift the gloom around the Italian team with Hamilton 0.530 sec slower than the pace-setting Russell.
