Brisbane trainer Rob Heathcote knows he'll be up against some 'serious horses' in Sunday's $1m The Archer slot race in Rockhampton but that won't stop him from daring to dream.
The Heathcote-trained gelding Cosmo Centaurus will run in the slot for Karla and Peter McPhail in the 1300m race, which costs $70,000 per entry and offers $565,000 to the winner.
Ironically it was Heathcote's horse Emerald Kingdom which edged out Apache Chase in the inaugural edition of The Archer in 2022 and guess who held the slot for the runner-up?
Yep, it was Karla and Peter McPhail.
Both those geldings ended up running in the Stradbroke Handicap that year but failed to make an impression in the 1400m major won by Alligator Blood, who retired last month as a seven-time Group 1 champion.

'I got a bit of a surprise when I did get the phone for Cosmo Centaurus but I'm not surprised when you analyse his runs, which have been a lot better than they look on paper,' Heathcote said.
'He's the only three-year-old in the race but I'm a realist. He's coming up against Iowna Merc, Sandpaper and Transatlantic, these are serious race horses.'
Cosmo Centaurus won his first two races but then finished ninth in his next two outings before a creditable fourth at his most recent start, the $160,000 Listed Daybreak Lover (1400m) won by Tony Gollan's rising star Boomtown Boss at Eagle Farm on April 19.
• Richard Callander's best futures bets for Qld winter, plus Sydney and Melbourne spring
'He hasn't had a lot of luck in his last couple of races and I'm having a horror run with barriers lately,' Heathcote said.
'I mean it makes all the difference. It's just getting to the stage where I'm exasperated with the continual run of bad barriers.'
Transatlantic ($3.60), Iowna Merc ($4.20) and Sandpaper ($6.50) lead Ladbrokes' market for The Archer, with Cosmo Centaurus currently paying $26.
Heathcote will be hoping for better luck for the barrier draw on Wednesday night and in a 'big plus', six-time Group 1 winner Chad Schofield will fly up from Sydney to ride the three-year-old gelding.
'I think the 1300m on that big track can suit him but the reality is that I have to temper my enthusiasm because he hasn't proven himself against this type of quality,' Heathcote said.
'There's no doubt it's going to be tough but he's a horse who I feel has a very bright future.'

Ciaron Maher and the Gai Waterhouse - Adrian Bott partnership await verdict on famous Randwick stables

The protracted decision on which trainer takes over Leilani Lodge has been delayed until later this week. An Australian Turf Club subcommittee tabled a report on the famous Randwick stables last Friday that has been given to the board of directors to consider. It is expected a decision will be made by the end of the week but even that is not guaranteed given several directors are overseas. Ciaron Maher, the nation's premier trainer, and the high profile Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott training partnership are the applicants to take over the famous racing stables at Royal Randwick. There is also speculation about what will happen to the Crown Lodge stables at Warwick Farm and the Osborne Park training and stabling facility near Agnes Banks when James Cummings completes his tenure at Godolphin at the end of next month. Godolphin Australia supremo Andy Makiv confirmed there has been interest from 'various parties' looking to acquire the training facilities, and also their Flemington stables. 'There has been plenty of interest in those (three) properties,' Makiv said. â– â– â– â– â– The Waterhouse-Bott stable struck early on Stradbroke Day when promising stayer Campaldino won the Group 2 Brisbane Cup (3200m) at Eagle Farm. Campaldino is now likely to be given his chance to complete the rare Brisbane Cup- Melbourne Cup double - a feat achieved only twice by Viewed (2008) and Macdougal (1959). â– â– â– â– â– Champion jockey James McDonald will have another chance to equal 'Miracle' Mal Johnston's longstanding Group 1 riding record after his second placing on Hidden Achievement in the JJ Atkins at Eagle Farm. Hidden Achievement missed the start but McDonald then rode a brilliant race with the colt emerging as a challenger halfway down the straight only for local hero Cool Archie to respond under pressure and draw clear near the line. McDonald, who had been unwell during the week and was forced to forgo his Stradbroke Handicap ride on Rothfire when he couldn't make 55.5kg, has ridden 15 Australian Group 1 wins for the season, one behind Johnston's record he set back in 1979-80 when the legendary Kingston Town was in his prime. Asfoora's trainer Henry Dwyer told English media the mare had 'travelled over really well' and had settled back into familiar surroundings at Newmarket. Dwyer said he has decided to put the blinkers on Asfoora for Tuesday's big race on the opening day of Royal Ascot. 'I think the blinkers may have been the missing link and I've always wanted to put blinkers on her as she is quite a 'looky' horse,' Dwyer said. 'The blinkers might add that little one per cent we need.'

Craig Williams cops suspension on Stradbroke Handicap pick-up ride

Don't miss out on the headlines from Horse Racing. Followed categories will be added to My News. Craig Williams' late Group 1 pick-up ride on Rothfire has resulted in the champion Victorian jockey being suspended for 14 days. Williams had been set to ride Gary Portelli's mare Kimochi in the Stradbroke Handicap until the Yulong-owned mare injured her tendon on Friday. • PUNT LIKE A PRO: Become a Racenet iQ member and get expert tips – with fully transparent return on investment statistics – from Racenet's team of professional punters at our Pro Tips section. However, the story had a sting in its tail with Williams suspended for careless riding for a back straight incident where Spicy Martini was tightened up. He will commence his suspension after next Saturday's Ipswich Cup meeting. • 'The boys have done it': Hayes proud of sons' landmark Stradbroke success Meanwhile, Group 1 JJ Atkins winning jockey Martin Harley was fined $500 by stewards for celebrating before the line on Cool Archie. Yellow Brick goes agonisingly close to fairytale upset in Stradbroke Handicap

Queensland hero Yellow Brick almost pulled one of the great fairytale upsets in recent Stradbroke Handicap history but the $41 roughie was narrowly outgunned by favourite War Machine in the $3m race at Eagle Farm on Saturday. It was a bittersweet moment for father-and-daughter trainers Tony and Maddy Sears, who were proud of Yellow Brick's incredible effort but the moment was tinged with some sadness given they came so close to jagging the $1.8m winner's cheque. But they will settle for $540,000 in prizemoney as the runner-up in Queensland's premier race run on a good track on a sunny day in Brisbane. • PUNT LIKE A PRO: Become a Racenet iQ member and get expert tips – with fully transparent return on investment statistics – from Racenet's team of professional punters at our Pro Tips section. SUBSCRIBE NOW! The Straddie is 1400m but if it was run over 1500m on Saturday, the Sears would be popping the champagne corks because Yellow Brick, with Andrew Mallyon on board, was starting to wear down War Machine ($2.65) approaching the winning post. Tony Sears said he was incredibly proud of Maddy, who had been training Yellow Brick at the pair's Gold Coast stables before he joined his daughter on the Glitter Strip just two weeks ago. • 'The boys have done it': Hayes proud of sons' landmark Stradbroke success 'I'm more proud of Maddysen than the horse,' he said. 'She's done a great job getting him ready. 'I've only been down the Gold Coast for two weeks. She's defied all the odds. People think he wasn't going very well but we knew he was going well. 'I backed him. We honestly thought he could win. He's just got to be ridden quiet like that. 'It was unbelievable, she's done a great job with him.' Maddy Sears said after the race she was 'speechless'. 'He was tremendous,' she said about Yellow Brick, who last won in a $160,000 Listed race over 1400m at Eagle Farm in October. 'That was the favourite (War Machine) in the race and he gave him a fair headstart at the top of the straight. 'He was the widest runner and he had to do things the hard way but I couldn't be any prouder.' This week Maddy Sears compared five-year-old gelding Yellow Brick to a Labrador Retriever because he 'loves to be the centre of attention'. And although the spoils of victory went to War Machine and Lindsay Park, Yellow Brick sure grabbed his share of attention. • What the jockeys said: 2025 Stradbroke Handicap Meanwhile, champion jockey Craig Williams said another Queensland hero, old warrior Rothfire, was 'gallant' in finishing seventh for trainer Rob Heathcote, who would have preferred a softer track. The seven-year-old Rothfire had battled a hoof injury for the past 10 days after suffering an untimely stone bruise and was lucky to even make the prestigious race. 'From the outside barrier draw he gave me a beautiful ride from there,' Williams said about the 2020 JJ Atkins champion. 'I got on the back of the eventual winner. He travelled so well but the winner was too good for us late. 'He just got a bit tired today and as Rob Heathcote said, he didn't have the ideal preparation.'
