Inside the chilling true story of hospital worker who murdered 87 patients to put them 'out of their misery'

Daily Mail19-05-2025

When Donald Harvey was hired as an orderly in a Kentucky hospital in 1970, he appeared on the outside as an eager teen desperate to escape his poor upbringing and make a better life for himself.
But on the inside, he was a gruesome murderer looking for victims to prey on.
For 17 years, Donald brutally killed over 80 patients while working at various medical facilities.
He would slip poison into their food or drinks, inject them with morphine when no one was looking, smother them with a pillow in the middle of the night, or lace their coffee with fluid infected with HIV.
How he got away with it for nearly two decades is still a question that hasn't fully been answered, but when he was finally caught in 1987 he was not ashamed of what he had done.
In fact, Donald was quick to confess, and has since described his actions as 'mercy killings,' claiming he was simply putting sick victims 'out of their misery.'
His harrowing story completely captured the globe in the late 1980s, and his belief that he was actually helping dying patients earned him the nickname the 'Angel of Death' killer.
Here, FEMAIL takes a look back at Donald's tormented childhood, his 17-year killing spree, and his disturbing justification for the murders.
Donald grew up in the tiny Appalachian town of Booneville, Kentucky, and his parents were struggling tobacco farmers.
He admitted during an interview from behind bars years after his trial that he knew he was gay from a young age, but struggled with his identity because of his strict religious upbringing.
'Being very effeminate acting and being a homosexual was not ideal for eastern Kentucky,' he said.
'I knew there were other places to be where it was more acceptable, and it was very Baptist-oriented type community.'
He also claimed that he was sexually molested as a child by his uncle and a neighbor 'for about 13 years.'
He dropped out of school in the ninth grade, and started working as an orderly at the Marymount Hospital in London, Kentucky, at age 18.
In 1970, he committed his first murder: he smothered an innocent 88-year-old patient named Logan Evans who had been admitted to the hospital for a stroke.
And it sparked a gruesome, 17-year killing spree that saw him murder as many as 87 people.
Donald has claimed that he mostly killed out of 'mercy,' as he believed he was putting sick patients 'out of their misery.'
He said, 'Most of the patients, that I have killed - the families, they come to visit at first ... [but then] they no longer visit.
'They have no one, and it's terrible to lay in [the hospital] day after day... And that's why I put 'em out of their misery like I hope someone would put me out of my misery.'
But he also admitted that sometimes he would act out of anger, describing himself as a 'nice and caring person' who had a 'meanness in him' when 'provoked.'
Donald used various ways to kill his patients - poisoning them, turning off ventilators, giving them too much morphine, suffocating them with pillows, inserting a coat hanger into a catheter, or even giving them fluid tainted with hepatitis B or HIV.
And his murder victims didn't just include people at the hospital, as he also murdered his lover Carl Hoeweler after he began to suspect he was cheating.
He also poisoned one of his friend, Diana Alexander, by putting hepatitis in her coffee.
'She's supposed to've been friends of both Carl and I, and she did nothing but cause trouble for us,' he said of Diana.
'I guess I wanted to teach her a lesson. I was just mad, and I thought well...'
Donald got away with killing patients for nearly two decades, evading police by moving to different hospitals when people began to get suspicious.
But he was finally caught in 1987, after a patient named John Powell abruptly died in the hospital he worked at in Ohio.
An autopsy showed large amounts of cyanide in his system, and investigators began to pick apart the hospital and its staff.
They suspected Donald after noticing how often he had moved around and brought him in for questioning, where he confessed.
Donald's lawyer asked for a plea bargain - if the prosecution took the death penalty off the table he would accept a sentence of life without parole and confess to all his murders - which was accepted by the prosecution.
His exact number of killings is still unknown, but he has claimed to have killed 87 people in total - 37 of his victims have been confirmed.
As per the plea bargain, he pleaded guilty to all 37 murders and was sentenced to life plus 20 years. He was admitted to Toledo Correctional Institution in October 1987.
When asked if he regretted his killings, he told interviewers, 'Yes.'
'There are some of the mercy killings I feel if I had to do over again I would do. Some of them no,' he added.
'There's a lot of countries that believe in mercy killing, but by a qualified physician. I guess I'd still do the same thing over on some of the cases.
'I'm at peace with myself... I think once I can tell my story maybe I can help someone else out.
'They're maybe having the same kind of problems, and maybe they'll recognize and able to go out and maybe get the proper help. Then I'll feel like, well, maybe I've accomplished something.'
In March 2017, after 30 years behind bars, Donald, then 64, was beaten to death by a fellow inmate.

Republican in South Carolina arrested over distribution of child sexual abuse material

A Republican member of South Carolina's state house whom prosecutors say used the screen name 'joebidennnn69' has been arrested and charged with 10 counts of distributing sexual abuse material involving children. RJ May was arrested at his Lexington county home after a lengthy investigation and was ordered Thursday by a federal judge to remain jailed until his trial. The three-term Republican is accused of using 'joebidennnn69' to exchange 220 files of toddlers and young children involved in sex acts on the Kik social media network for about five days in spring 2024, according to court documents that graphically detailed the videos. During that timeframe, Joe Biden was in the final year of his presidency before May's fellow Republican Donald Trump won the November 2024 election to return to the White House in January. Each charge against May carries a five-to-20-year prison sentence upon conviction. Prosecutors suggested May could spend more than a decade in prison if found guilty. The files at the center of the case were uploaded and downloaded using May's home wifi network and his cellphone, prosecutors said. Some were hidden by the use of a private network, but others were directly linked to his internet addresses. At his arraignment, May's lawyer suggested someone could have used the wifi password that was shown on a board behind a photo May's wife may have posted online. Attorney Dayne Phillips also suggested investigators didn't link each Kik message directly to May. Prosecutors asked that May, 38, not be given bail because he lives at home with his wife and young children, and some of the files he is accused of sharing feature children of about the same age as his. Prosecutors said they also investigated whether May had used a fake name to travel to Colombia three times after finding videos on his laptop of him allegedly having sex with three girls or women. An agent from the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) testified the three appeared to be underage and were paid. Agents have not been able to locate the three. Prosecutors said May created a Facebook account with his fake name, and his internet history showed him switching between his real account and the fake one – and even searching his primary opponent from the fake login. Phillips, May's lawyer, told the courtroom that no sexual images of toddlers or young children were found directly on his laptop or cellphone. After spending the night in jail, May appeared in court Thursday in shorts and a T-shirt with his wrists and ankles in cuffs. After being ordered to stay in jail, he appeared to blow a kiss to his wife, who was at the hearing. After May's election in 2020, he helped create the Freedom caucus, a group of the house's most conservative members who say mainstream Republicans in the chamber aren't the true conservative heart of their party. He also helped the campaigns of Republicans running against the party's house incumbents. 'We as legislators have an obligation to insure that our children have no harm done to them,' May said in January 2024 on the house floor during a debate on transgender care for minors. Sign up to Headlines US Get the most important US headlines and highlights emailed direct to you every morning after newsletter promotion His son charmed the house in April 2021 when May brought him to visit for his third birthday, and the boy practiced his parade wave around the chamber. The Freedom caucus released a statement Wednesday night saying they'd kicked May out of their group after his arrest. Many of his one-time friends distanced themselves from May as rumors of the investigation spread through the South Carolina statehouse. During the current session, he could largely be seen at his corner desk in the back of the 124-seat chamber, mixing with very few colleagues. The house speaker suspended May from his seat after the indictment. May's lawyer suggested he could have been framed and asked the DHS agent if she knew that May had a lot of political enemies. 'There are a fair amount of people who don't like me either, Mr Phillips,' agent Britton Lorenzen replied. Double tragedy off Maine coast after fisherman and girlfriend encountered SHIPWRECK while gathering clams

A fishing boat captain and his girlfriend have died after encountering a shipwreck off the coast of Cape Cod. Shawn Arsenault, 64, and Felicia Daley, 54, vanished without a trace after setting off from Rock Harbor in Orleans, Massachusetts to go clamming on Sunday. A frantic manhunt was launched for the pair, with officials finally finding Arsenault's sunken boat three days later about five miles away, near Eastham. The couple were found inside the 'wheelhouse' of the boat, the captain's brother Paul Arsenault told the Boston Globe. They were not wearing life jackets and had not made a distress call, he added. Paul suspects his brother's beloved Seahorse, a 30-foot white-hulled vessel, got 'hooked up on a wreck that was on the bottom of the ocean'. He thinks the incident 'happened so fast' that Arsenault and Daley were unable to contact emergency services for help. The Coast Guard is also investigating reports that the fisherman threw electronic electronic equipment into the water before leaving the harbor. Arsenault and Daley planned to go clamming near the Target Ship Wreck in Cape Cod Bay aboard the Seahorse, which features a painted mermaid on the bow. They were reported missing on Tuesday morning when the harbormaster saw Arsenault's truck still parked at marina two days after the Seahorse left the harbor. Authorities began to search for the pair at the boat's last known location, which according to a cell phone ping was roughly two miles offshore from Chatham. Search crews were set to both sides of the harbor because 'phone pings have a high degree of variability'. The Coast Guard issued an urgent emergency alert and carried out an extensive search of Cape Cod Bay's fishing area overnight. A recreational fisherman spotted Arsenault's missing boat on Wednesday morning which, according to the Coast Guard, was found 'off shore inside the bay'. The cellphone ping 'put them offshore in Chatham on the wrong side', a spokesperson added. Officials previously said weather likely wasn't a factor in their disappearance, although search efforts were hampered by fog and thunderstorms. Paul said his brother and Daley, who had been dating for several months, were both experienced on boats. He told the newspaper that owning the Seahorse was 'Shawn's dream' and Sunday marked 'only his third time out' on the boat. Arsenault recently got 'new radar' and a 'fish finder', Paul added, noting his brother 'was excited' about his new equipment. Witnesses reported seeing Arsenault throw equipment overboard when he left the dock on Sunday morning. 'I noticed in the surf there was something floating, so I went down to see what it was, and it turned out to be a GPS unit off of a boat,' local resident Sam Miller, who spotted the device while walking along the beach with her father told CBS Boston. 'We could tell it was a GPS unit off a boat... it had blue tape on it that said 'F/V Seahorse.' The Coast Guard confirmed it have received reports from locals, but did not say what equipment may have been tossed. The agency is investigating the reports. But Paul remains skeptical, telling the Globe that he 'can't imagine' Arsenault throwing anything overboard because 'all that stuff means a lot to him'. The grieving brother also paid tribute to Arsenault and his partner, whom he claims were 'absolutely nuts about each other'. He hailed the fishing captain as a 'hero' and said he was 'very loved in his community', sharing how Arsenault would go out of his way to help those in need. 'There was one gentleman with Parkinson's ... my brother would cook him dinner every night and walk it down to him,' he told the newspaper. 'That's the kind of person he was.' Arsenault also 'loved being on the water,' Paul explained, telling WCVB: 'He loved the excitement. He loved being his own boss. He loved being a captain.' He added the tragedy is 'like a nightmare' and he is still 'waiting to wake up'. The couple's friends are also mourning their deaths, with Arsenault's friend Patrick sharing how the late fisherman was 'cracking jokes' and had a voice so loud that 'you would know he was in the next town over'. Daley's friend Scott Amerault told TV station 'if you had her as a friend, you had a good friend'. Although he is wondering what went wrong in the harbor, Amerault said the ocean 'takes you when it wants to' and 'you can't question what the ocean does'. Some locals have suggested the structure of the boat may have contributed to the tragedy, with one alleging it was 'not a very stable boat'. 'It had a round shine, and a lot of gear high. If it got hung up on a drag or something like that, it'd go right over,' charter operator Hap Farrell to WCVB. Coast Guard Commander Cliff Graham, in a statement to NBC 10, confirmed the tragedy and said: 'Our hearts go out to the families of both persons onboard. 'The level of support from our maritime response partners and members from the fishing and local community was remarkable. It directly contributed to detection of the vessel and closure for the family.'

Mexican President slams LA rioters for flying her country's flag

By Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has slammed Los Angeles rioters for proudly flying her country's flag while clashing with police, looting and burning cars. Sheinbaum singled out a photograph of a protester who was pictured standing on top of a burnt Waymo self-driving Jaguar waving the green, red and white flag with the Mexican coat of arms in the middle. 'We don't agree with violent actions, and I think even some of the photographs that came out—as I said the other day—are very likely a provocation. Very likely.' Sheinbaum said during a press conference at the National Palace on Wednesday. While the president acknowledged that she did not have all of the background on the photo, she said that the image was 'a very provocative photograph, to say the least.' Flag-bearing protesters have been since June 7 after angered residents took to the streets to called out the administration of President Donald Trump over the series of raids led by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents culminated with the arrests of undocumented immigrants. As the sun set and peaceful demonstrations turned violent, one man was snapped waving the Mexico flag while standing in front of a wrecked car that was sprayed with graffiti aimed at ICE. Protests over the Trump-mandated immigration sweeps extended over the weekend with Waymo Jaguar I-PACE vehicles destroyed and torched. One photographer on the seen spotted a person waving the Mexican flag as the flames spread across the self-driving ride-hailing car. President Sheinbaum's remarks come as the nationwide rally, dubbed 'No Kings,' are scheduled to take place Saturday. 'We don't agree with violent actions. We've never agreed with them. They lead nowhere. Mexicans and everyone else, when demonstrating, it should always be peaceful.' Sheinbaum criticized the Trump administration's response to the immigration crisis earlier during the week following the unveiling a news hospital wings in the central city of Puebla. 'We disagree with this approach to the migration phenomenon," she said. 'It's not about raids or violence, but rather working on a comprehensive reform that takes into account the Mexicans on the other side of the border,' she added. 'That is our position, always a call for peace, to not exacerbate any form of violent protest.' The president also lauded the contributions of Mexicans in the Los Angeles area. 'Mexicans living in the United States are good, honest men and women who left to seek a better life for themselves and to support their families,' she said. 'They are not criminals.' At least 48.6 percent of the city's population is Hispanic or Latino. At least 31 percent claim Mexican ancestry, according to U.S. Census Bureau data from July 2024.
