Sathankulam case: HC dismisses accused cop's seventh bail plea

Madras high court
on Monday dismissed the bail plea moved by suspended inspector of police S Sridhar, who was arrested in connection with the custodial deaths of P Jeyaraj and his son J Beniks at Sathankulam in Tuticorin district in 2020.
The court was hearing the bail petition filed by Sridhar, the first accused in the case. Sridhar's counsel submitted that the petitioner was in judicial custody for a long period. The case is pending for cross-examination of the second investigating officer, and to complete his examination, it will take four or five months. So, the counsel sought bail to prepare arguments.
However, the special public prosecutor for the
CBI
strongly objected to the grant of bail.
He submitted that the intention of the petitioner and other accused is only to drag the proceedings.
The counsel for Jeyaraj's wife, Selvarani, also opposed the grant of bail to the petitioner, stating that if he is granted bail, he might abscond.
Justice P Vadamalai observed that the petitioner filed six petitions for bail before the HC and a special leave petition before the Supreme Court, and those petitions were dismissed considering the heinous nature and gravity of offences allegedly committed by the petitioner and other accused.
The petitioner has not engaged counsel and cross-examined all the witnesses in person at length by taking a number of hearings.
The judge observed that charges against the petitioner are serious in nature, and the case is almost at the end of the trial.
The petitioner participated in the trial and cross-examined the prosecution witnesses in person without engaging any counsel. So, he has ample knowledge about the case and evidence. The petitioner is at liberty to engage counsel and to give instructions or to get guidance for preparation of arguments in the prison itself, according to permissible rules available in the Tamil Nadu Prison Manual. The petitioner mainly seeks bail for the reason of preparing arguments.
It is not a valid ground to grant bail, the judge observed and dismissed the bail petition.

The suspects allegedly manhandled the women in the Innova when they tried to intervene. After dragging the men out, the attackers punched and slapped a couple of them in the face. By then, two women from the victim's vehicle stormed out and cried out for help. Hearing them, passersby and other commuters came near them. The women explained to them that the former MP's men were attacking them. Soon, a crowd gathered. Sensing trouble, Hegde's driver Mahesh tried to drive away. Gunman Sridhar and the MP's son were seen entering the SUV in a hurry. By then, two of the women from the victim's vehicle blocked Hegde's SUV. Meanwhile, patrolling police reached the spot. They alerted their higher-ups. Soon, parties from both vehicles reached Dobbespet police station. "They punched me so hard on my mouth that my two teeth were broken. I went to a health centre and later filed the complaint," Saif said. As the crowd outside the station swelled, cops took everyone inside. The former MP and others were questioned, sources said. Also, the individuals from the Innova accused Sridhar of threatening them with his licensed gun. "I'm the gunman for the former MP, who faces life threats. It's my duty to safeguard him at such a situation. I pulled out the gun as a precautionary measure," Sridhar told cops.

Telangana HC fines NIA Rs 20k over PFI bail delay; cites repeated adjournments, no progress since 2024
HYDERABAD: The Telangana high court came down heavily on the National Investigation Agency (NIA) for repeated delays in pursuing criminal appeals to cancel the bail granted to members of the banned Popular Front of India (PFI). Expressing strong disapproval, a division bench directed the country's premier investigation agency to pay Rs 20,000 as costs to the high court advocates' association. Though the agency filed appeals in 2024 seeking to revoke the bail granted to the accused, it consistently sought adjournments and failed to advance the matter. "We do not appreciate the delay on the part of the NIA in proceeding with the appeals. The appeals were filed in 2024, and almost a year has passed without even admission," the bench said, directing the agency to furnish proof of payment of the imposed costs on the next date of hearing. The order was given on June 16. The PFI members were accused of allegedly motivating and radicalising youth to carry out violent terrorist activities and were booked under different sections of the IPC and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act. The Nizamabad police filed the case in 2022 and subsequently, the NIA registered a fresh case and took up the investigation.
