Chris Kreider makes classy exit from Rangers, expresses ‘gratitude for how I was treated'

Yahoo9 hours ago

Beyond being one of the most prolific goal scorers in New York Rangers history, Chris Kreider was always a first-class human being start to finish during his tenure on Broadway. So, the fact that he exited the organization publicly expressing heartfelt appreciation Thursday is not a surprise.
Selected by the Rangers with the No. 19 overall pick in the 2009 NHL Draft, Kreider was traded to the Anaheim Ducks for center prospect Carey Terrance and a swap of mid-round picks in this year's draft.

The departure of the longest tenured current Rangers player was expected for months, after his name was included in general manager Chris Drury's infamous trade memo in November. Though he had some dark moments the past several months, which included several injuries and a severe drop off with on-ice production this past season, Kreider took the high road Thursday.
'I think I've gone through the spectrum: Anger, sadness, grief,' Kreider told reporters. 'Whatever you want to call it. But I keep on arriving at gratitude for how I was treated, the opportunities I was given, for the connection I was able to make, the relationships, the friendships, the experiences I was able to have.
'Playing in front of that fan base, at that arena, playing in some of the games I was able to play in. Stuff that is so memorable and means so much to me and stuff that I'll take with me for the rest of my life.'
Kreider also expressed his appreciation that the Rangers — Drury in particular — communicated honestly with him since the season ended about their plans to move him. It's been reported that Drury didn't enter trade discussions with the his Ducks counterpart Pat Verbeek before clearing it with Kreider, since they were on his 15-team no-trade list.

'There was a lot of communication from Rangers management and from Chris Drury, in particular, about where they stood and kind of what the next steps in the process were going to look like,' Kreider explained. 'Around the year-end meetings, we had some good conversations and I understood that this was a very real possibility.'

The 34-year-old forward expressed regret that he tried to play through a hand injury after the 4 Nations Face-Off in February, reasoning that made him a shell of the impactful player he'd been previously.

Kreider finished third on the Rangers with 22 goals, but dropped from 75 points to 30 year-over-year from 2023-24. With Drury looking to shake up the roster after the Rangers missed the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the first time in four years, Kreider was an obvious target to be traded, especially with a $6.5 million salary-cap hit the next two seasons. Anaheim took on the entirety of his contract, giving the Rangers much more financial flexibility this offseason, roughly $15 million.
Ironically, the Ducks did the same in December, when they took Jacob Trouba off the Rangers' hands. The former Blueshirts captain is owed $8 million this season.
'Chris Kreider is the type of player we were looking to add this offseason,' Verbeek said in a statement. 'He has size, speed and is a clutch performer that elevates his game in big moments. Chris also upgrades both of our special teams units, something we really needed to address.'
Kreider leaves New York as the third-leading goal scorer in Rangers history with 326. He's also 10th all-time in points (582), seventh in games played (883), and tied for first with 116 power-play goals.

No Rangers player appeared in more postseason games than Kreider (123), and no-one scored more playoff goals (48). The Rangers played in five Eastern Conference Finals during Kreider's tenure and the 2014 Stanley Cup Final, when they lost to the Los Angeles Kings in five games.

Adam Silver: NBA ‘should be exploring' expansion

Commissioner Adam Silver offered hope to cities looking to land an NBA franchise, saying Thursday that the league "should be exploring" expansion. Silver addressed the media in his annual state-of-the-league talk ahead of Game 1 of the NBA Finals between the Indiana Pacers and the host Oklahoma City Thunder. Regarding the addition of teams, Silver said, "I don't think it's automatic, because it depends on your perspective on the future of the league. As I've said before, expansion in a way is selling equity in the league. If you believe in the league, you don't necessarily want to add partners. "On the other hand, we recognize there are underserved markets in the United States and elsewhere -- I think markets that deserve to have NBA teams. Probably even if we were to expand, more than we can serve." In terms of potential expansion locations, Silver said, "There's been no lack of interest. I essentially have said to people from several different cities, 'We're just not engaging in that process right now.' "I want to be fair to everyone. So I don't want to have meetings with some and not others. So if we were to say yes, we're now going to move into a more formal exploratory phase. We would take those meetings, and in addition likely we would engage with outside advisers who would look at markets, look at economic opportunities and media opportunities, etc." The NBA hasn't expanded since the then-Charlotte Bobcats joined ahead of the 2004-05 season. Las Vegas and Seattle are widely viewed as the top targets for future teams, with Mexico City potentially in the mix, too. Silver addressed several other topics: --While a spate of regular-season injuries prompted speculation about the NBA cutting down the 82-game regular season, Silver dismissed the notion of a lighter schedule. "Money's part of it, there's no question about it," Silver said. "We're a business. Having said that, I don't really see the benefit to reducing the number of games. People used to say you should reduce the number of games because it will lead to a reduction in a number of injuries. We have absolutely no data to suggest that. ... "Injuries are considered down this playoffs from what has been historically our second-lowest in 10 years. So we have pretty healthy teams coming into the Finals now." --After the success of the NHL's 4 Nations Face-Off, the NBA is likely to switch to nationality-based format for the 2026 All-Star Game in Inglewood, Calif. "I don't think a straight-up USA versus World makes sense," Silver said. "That's not what they did in the NHL, either. There probably will be some different teams we form." Noting that the 2026 game will be played amid the Winter Olympics in Italy, Silver said, "I think we can play off that nationalism. ... I think there's a real opportunity to create enhanced interest and enhanced competition from the players." --Silver lauded the fact that the NBA is about to crown its seventh different champion in seven years. "We set out to create a system that allowed for more competition around the league, the goal being to have 30 teams all in a position, if well-managed, to be competing for championships," he said. "And that's what we're seeing here. ... "The goal isn't necessarily to have a different champion every year. It's to have, as we said before, parity of opportunity." --Field Level Media Field Level Media 2023 - All Rights Reserved

5-star QB Ryder Lyons sets commitment date with Oregon Football among favorites

5-star QB Ryder Lyons sets commitment date with Oregon Football among favorites BREAKING: Five-Star QB Ryder Lyons will announce his Commitment on June 24th, he tells me for @on3recruits He's the Top Uncommitted QB in the 2026 Classhttps:// — Hayes Fawcett (@Hayesfawcett3) June 19, 2025 The following week is going to be a busy one for Oregon Duck fans who follow high school recruiting. There are some high-profile prospects for whom the Ducks are in a good position to come off the board, and on Wednesday night, one of the most impactful players announced that he's joining the group set to announce his commitment in the coming days. That player is 5-star quarterback Ryder Lyons, who is rated by 247Sports as the No. 13 player and No. 4 QB in the 2026 class. On Wednesday, Lyons announced that he will officially make his commitment on Tuesday, June 24, following his official visit to the BYU Cougars. Lyons took his visit to Oregon last week, and with his commitment reportedly coming down to the Ducks and Cougars, it makes sense that he wants to make his decision after this weekend. While Oregon is seen as a strong contender to land Lyons, based on their track record of developing QBs, the offensive system, and his relationship with offensive coordinator Will Stein, BYU is a huge threat here. Several reports show that the Cougars have offered a massive NIL deal for Lyons, who has strong ties to the morman community and is expected to take an LDS mission out of high school, delaying his freshman year until 2027. Ultimately, it's likely going to come down to which matters more for Lyons; a huge lump sum of money, or the opportunity to play for and be developed by the Ducks. Ultimately, we will find out next week where the 5-star is going to end up. Donato, an eight-year veteran, has 43 goals in two seasons with the Blackhawks. He had never scored more than 31 points in a season until doubling that output last season.
