Gunman remains at large after shooting five people at Connecticut mall
A gunman is still on the loose after a shooting at a Waterbury, Connecticut, mall on Tuesday that resulted in five people being shot, according to police.
Waterbury Police Department Chief Fernando Spagnolo told reporters none of the victims were fatally wounded and all of them were transported and treated at area hospitals.
Police were called to the Brass Mill Center Mall at about 4:40 p.m. on Tuesday for a report of a disturbance.
When officers arrived, they located five victims who were struck by gunfire.

"We do not believe this was a random act of violence," Spagnolo said. "We believe this started as a conflict and it escalated. We do know that there was one gunman at this time [whom] we've identified. That gunman was armed with a semi-automatic pistol."

The chief also said evidence has been recovered from the scene that is helping to identify the type of weapon used, and "hopefully" the shooter, through various investigative means and forensic technology.

State Police, the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) are assisting police with the investigation, which includes the collection of video and digital evidence.
"This is going to be a very lengthy and ongoing and active investigation," Spagnolo said.

He also said there is currently no danger to the public, though he advised anyone to report anything suspicious to the police.
The investigation into the matter is ongoing.
Connecticut Gov. Ned Lamont called the shooting "tragic" in a post on X.
"This afternoon there was a tragic mass shooting at the Bass Mill Center in Waterbury, a place where everyone should feel safe. We are grateful to law enforcement, who acted swiftly," the governor wrote. "Details are still forthcoming, but the @CT_STATE_POLICE will be assisting @WaterburyPD with the investigation. MOUNT GILEAD, Ohio (WCMH) – It's been a week since the people of Morrow County began mourning the tragic death of one of their own. Morrow County Sheriff's Deputy Daniel Sherrer was shot and killed one week ago on the evening of Memorial Day. His accused killer, 53-year-old Brian Wilson, is scheduled to appear in court Tuesday for the first time since the shooting. It's now covered in flowers, memories, keepsakes, and other items to memorialize Sherrer. Blue ribbons were hung throughout the town of Mount Gilead. A local gym bought blue lights for people to put on their porch in order to 'light the county blue' for Sherrer and the rest of the law enforcement community. The people of Morrow County showed up again for Sherrer and his family on Monday. 'It's just like a cold shot ran right through my chest because he was a very good person and way too young to die. He was the kind of guy that always would help people, no matter what was going on. He would try to help. And it just seemed so sad to me that he tried to help someone and lost his life because of it.' For Taylor, helping her community during a time of need is a no-brainer. School nurse helps rescue grandfather who fell during hike at Utah canyon
Ashley Anderson was hiking in with her two kids and her dogs on Memorial Day when she heard yelling. "I look over and I didn't even know what I was looking at at first," she said. "It took me a second to register that it was a body." A 64-year-old grandfather had fallen 20 feet down waterfall in Utah's Adams Canyon. Anderson, a school nurse, sprang into action and used her training to help him. She told NBC affiliate KSL of Salt Lake City that the man had an "obviously broken" leg and that his head was "sliced open and bleeding." When Anderson arrived, she and other hikers who had pitched in to help moved him out of the cold water that was covering him. She then began first aid. She said she told the group she needed something to stop bleeding on the man's head. "This guy rips off his shirt and throws it on me, so we put that on his head, and several of us picked him up and moved him to a dry area over on the rocks," Anderson recalled. Rescue teams responded, using a helicopter to drop rescuers into the canyon before they lifted the man back up to safety. Authorities said that the man was hiking with his children and grandchildren and that he fell after they got separated, KSL reported. Anderson told the station the man's family said he slipped and fell into the canyon. The station reported he shattered his kneecap and broke his femur but is expected to make a full recovery.
