West Australian22-05-2025

The upcoming WA Day festival at the Museum of Geraldton will meld community, culture and creativity, with a day of live music, food, art and interactive experiences promised.
The free celebration for all ages, hosted by the museum and supported by BHP, the State Government and Lotterywest, will be staged on Monday, June 2, from 10am-2pm.
Organisers say the festival will 'honour the stories, people and cultures that shape Geraldton and the Mid West', and will highlight 'the diversity, creativity and community spirit of the region'.
Museum of Geraldton regional manager Leigh O'Brien said WA Day at the museum was one of their favourite events of the year.
'There's something truly special about seeing the whole community come together to share stories, enjoy the festivities, and celebrate what it means to be Western Australian. It's a joyful, inclusive day — and there's nothing else quite like it,' she said.
On the agenda is a Living Histories program featuring cultural experiences such as live sand art by Coleesha Jones and a collaborative Aboriginal artwork led by local artist Carol Martin.
People can go on guided walking tours exploring Geraldton's maritime heritage, local music scene and CBD street art during the day.
Residents are encouraged to contribute to a growing time line of Geraldton's history by taking part in a collaborative mural at the museum, and a group art project celebrating the story of WA.
The return of the popular paper plane competition and wheelchair basketball sessions hosted by ATLAS are some of the activities on offer for all ages.
Families can also enjoy face painting, hoverball archery, sketching, rope balancing, and wildlife displays.
The main stage will be headlined by First Nations rapper Sam B, who will perform alongside a line-up of emerging local artists.
Other on-stage entertainment will include cultural dance performances by various community groups, including the First Nations youth girls' dance group.
Hungry guests will have a wealth of options available, with food stalls offering a wide variety of international cuisine. To top it off, they can learn the cultural stories behind each dish and how to prepare selected meals.

Coming to ABC: Comedy Legend Dawn French to star in Sean Tan's animated series about growing up in Perth

Comedy legend Dawn French is set to star in the animated series based on Sean Tan's best-selling illustrated anthology, Tales From Outer Suburbia. The celebrated comedian and actress, best known for her starring role in classic 90s sitcom The Vicar of Dibley and for being one half of the iconic 'French and Saunders' comedy duo, will join the voice cast for the 10 x 22-minute series, currently in development and coming soon to ABC. Described as 'a uniquely Western Australian take on growing up in Perth', the 10-episode series will make its world premiere this week at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival in France. Created by Highly Spirited and Flying Bark Productions, the series was produced out of both Flying Bark in NSW and WA-based Siamese, with Tan, an Academy Award-winning writer/artist/filmmaker, overseeing the series as Creative Director. Based on Tan's memories of growing up in the northern suburbs of Perth, the story centres around 'almost 13 year-old' Klara and her six year-old brother Pim, who move to Outer Suburbia with their newly single mother, Lucy. 'The siblings' summer holiday turns into a series of unexpected and surreal adventures, with the family encountering weird and miraculous phenomena as they adapt to their new reality,' the release reads. Dawn French voices Klara and Pim's Grandma. 'Grandma is amazing. She's courageous and adventurous, she's quite chaotic, she's a bit bonkers,' French said. 'What drew me to the character, and the whole project, is it's quite possibly the strangest thing I've ever read! 'It's very surreal — you understand it on a visceral level but you also don't understand it, so you're drawn in to try and make sense of slightly surreal things. 'This is a series about big, big themes: themes of rejection, forgiveness, absence, loss, grief, judgment, friendships. 'I think it's absolutely crucial that we make good quality shows for children and for families because it's a shared experience when you watch something together.' 'Dawn brings a unique warmth, confidence and levity to a character that audiences really needed to trust during difficult moments, and I can't imagine a better performance,' Creative Director Shaun Tan said. 'She is the anchor of reassurance in a sea of animated weirdness, the hand you want to hold tight as the tide fills the room.' Alongside French, the series also stars Geraldine Hakewell (Lucy) and newcomers Brooklyn Davies (Klara) and Felix Oliver Vergés (Pim) as the family at the centre of the story — Austin and Love on the Spectrum's Michael Theo also lends his voice. Sreenwest Chief Executive Officer Rikki Lea Bestall said: 'Screenwest is beyond proud to support this quintessentially Western Australian take on growing up in the 'burbs of Perth — and what a coup to have Dawn French amongst the cast. 'Shaun Tan is an incredibly talented creative whose works resonate with young and old. 'We cannot wait to see this series on screen, and congratulate everyone involved for Tales From Outer Suburbia being selected to make its world premiere at Annecy.'

King's Birthday Honours: Humble local musician and teacher Guy Ghouse receives Order of Australia

WA musician and teacher Guy Ghouse, best known for performing alongside acclaimed Noongar singer Gina Williams, has been recognised in this year's King's Birthday Honours. The guitarist said becoming a Member of the Order of Australia was 'an honour and humbling', but he was initially reluctant to accept the accolade. Williams, who received the same honour in 2021, said her musical partner was a worthy recipient. 'Guy, in his own right, has been an exceptional contributor to the WA arts and music community for a really long period of time,' she said, highlighting Ghouse's efforts to 'elevate' First Nations artists dating back to before their Noongar-language collaborations began in 2010. Ghouse was born in Perth in January 1969, 10 days after his Malaysian-born parents arrived in Australia on a Norwegian cargo boat. Boasting Chinese, Indian, French, Scottish, Irish, Portuguese and Dutch heritage, Ghouse is a third-generation musician. A defining moment in his childhood came when his parents moved to Fitzroy Crossing to teach music. 'I didn't do too well at school for a bunch of different reasons,' Ghouse explained, 'but when I went up to Fitzroy Crossing, I was learning via correspondence and was able to get my schoolwork done early so I could pick up the guitar and play.' In the Kimberley, the young musician was also exposed to remote Indigenous communities and fell in love with the culture and landscape. After borrowing his father's guitars, Ghouse bought his first guitar using money raised mowing lawns at age 14. Purchased while visiting family in Singapore, the red Fender Stratocaster was in honour of his guitar hero, Perth-based Shadows legend Hank Marvin, who has been in the audience at two of Ghouse's performances with Williams. While he first met Williams when she was presenting shows on the Golden West Network in Broome, they didn't start performing together until 2010. Six-time winners of Indigenous act of the year at the WA Music Industry Awards, the duo have released four Noongar-language albums, starting with Kalyakoorl in 2012 and most recently 2021's Koort. They also created the Noongar opera Wundig wer Wilura, which opened the Perth Festival in 2024. Ghouse, who was named best guitarist at the awards in 2020, said they copped 'quite vicious and racist' hate mail from 'keyboard ghosts' when the Noongar-language project began, but it soon disappeared. The 56-year-old said, the collaboration strangely feels like a natural progression from his early days playing blues in regional pubs. 'When I started to work with Gina and we decided to pursue Gina's language, it was so authentic and connected, meaningful on so many levels,' Ghouse explained from a Northbridge studio where he was recording a song for Albany's bicentennial in 2026. 'It was humbling to have the opportunity to play music in that way.' Ghouse and Williams recently returned from Japan where they represented Australia at the 2025 World Expo in Osaka. 'The Japanese people were absolutely mesmerised,' he said. 'So much so that they've invited us back.' Other highlights include performing at Australia House in London and at the 2021 AFL Grand Final in Perth. Ghouse said a 'lightbulb moment' came while he was teaching music in the remote Bidaydanga community south of Broome in the late 90s. A visiting health worker complained that her job would be easier if local elders learnt to speak a bit of English. 'I said 'Well, you're on this country, wouldn't it work better if you met them halfway and learnt a few words',' he said. Ghouse then wrote songs in Karajarri language with local musician Mervyn Mulardy to help connect Indigenous and non-Indigenous parts of the community. The musician said the Order of Australia honour is 'kwop', the Noongar word for 'good', and proof that a lack of tertiary qualifications should not hold anybody back. In 1989, Ghouse quit his studies at the WA Academy of Performing Arts to join the beloved multicultural Gunada Band in Broome. He later returned to WAAPA to teach the Aboriginal musical theatre course. 'Universities and tertiary institutions aren't the only avenues to achieving your goals in music,' Ghouse said. 'It takes hard work, love and passion.'
