Commentary
As we approach Memorial Day weekend, I encourage everyone to join me in taking the time to honor the brave men and women who have served our nation.
Although this holiday marks the unofficial start of summer, there are also many parades, flag ceremonies, and other events that memorialize the true meaning of this weekend. Please plan to attend one of these with your families before taking advantage of the variety of events and activities happening around the county. Let's come together to commemorate our heroes and make lasting memories with our loved ones.
Whether you're planning to attend a local parade, enjoy a family picnic, or explore our beautiful parks or historic sites, there's something going on in our great county for everyone to enjoy. For a comprehensive list of events and family-friendly activities, be sure to visit
I want to highlight some of the incredible individuals and efforts that make Orange County such a special place, starting with our Citizen of the Month.
As county executive, I am proud to recognize Theresa Canfield of Montgomery as our Orange County Citizen of the Month for May. A dedicated teacher at Warwick's Park Avenue Elementary School, Theresa is also a tireless advocate for our veterans. From leading fundraising efforts for Wreaths Across America to organizing a heartfelt Veterans Day ceremony, Theresa is truly making a difference. She inspires her students to honor our heroes and give back to their communities, and for that, we are grateful. Congratulations, Theresa, you are so deserving of this recognition!
Continuing with our commitment to honoring veterans, I'm excited to share that the latest episode of NeuCAST is now live, featuring Hudson Valley Honor Flight. In this moving episode, I sit down with Executive Director Jennifer DeFrancesco to explore how the organization ensures our local heroes receive the recognition they deserve through unforgettable trips to visit the War Monuments and Memorials in Washington. It's an emotional and inspiring conversation about service, sacrifice, and gratitude. Don't miss it! Please watch and share it to help spread awareness for this incredible mission.

This past week, I attended the New York State Police Troop F Memorial Day Service, where we honored troopers who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty. These fallen heroes and the families they have left behind deserve our lasting respect and remembrance. Their courage and unwavering commitment to protecting our communities will never be forgotten.
I was fortunate to take part in the All-American Striped Bass Tournament for Hope in Newburgh. This outstanding event raised an incredible $350,000 for veterans, with 92 cents of every dollar going directly toward supporting their needs. Veterans were paired with boat owners and fishing captains for a day of camaraderie and competition.
A special thanks to my friend Dan Depew for the invite, and to supporters, including the cast of the TV series 'SEAL Team': Judd Lormand, A.J. Buckley, and Tyler Grey, who is a decorated veteran himself. It was a powerful experience to meet and speak with so many veterans from around the Hudson Valley, many of whom were severely wounded in combat. My heartfelt thanks to all who made this day possible, including local supporters like Billy Joe's Ribworks, Riverfront Marina, and Mobile Cigar Vendors.
Back on land, we're also making exciting progress in public works. In the Town of Mount Hope, our Bridge Project reached a major milestone this week with the installation of 200-foot-long steel girders at the CR18 bridge site. This effort represents a fantastic collaboration between our steel workers, crane operators, and Metro-North Railroad. Next up: preparing for the concrete bridge deck.
Stay tuned for more updates as we push forward with improving our county's infrastructure.
Finally, be sure to take advantage of the annual Plant Sale at the Orange County Arboretum! Whether you're a seasoned green thumb or just discovering the joy of gardening, it's a great way to add a splash of color to your home or garden this season. For dates and hours, visit
I look forward to seeing you around the county!

Jon Gruden was a guest at Ravens OTA practice

Jon Gruden was a guest at Ravens OTA practice The Baltimore Ravens had former NFL head coach, and Super Bowl winner Jon Gruden as a guest at OTAs The Ravens had an interesting guest at their OTA practice on Thursday. Despite the joy of Rashod Bateman's new contract, it was the presence of their unexpected visitor that stole headlines. Former Las Vegas Raiders head coach Jon Gruden took the field with John Harbaugh's coaching staff at the Under Armour Performance Center to watch the team run drills, which had media members in attendance buzzing amongst themselves. Gruden was seen having conversations with GM Eric DeCosta, but spent most of his time near Baltimore offensive coordinator Todd Monken. Gruden, who saw his stint with the Raiders end abruptly after a controversy over racist and homophobic emails that he sent sparked outrage across the NFL landscape in 2021, was decked out in Ravens gear while keeping a low profile.

SSFF & ASIA 2025 Save the Earth! The Minister of the Environment Award Goes to "Damji" from Iran!

The film depicts climate change in a 2 minutes drama Available online from June 12 (THU) TOKYO, June 6, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- Short Shorts Film Festival & Asia (SSFF & ASIA) 2025, one of Asia's largest international short film festivals accredited by the U.S. Academy Awards®, announced on Thursday June 5th, the Save the Earth! the Minister of the Environment Award, given to the film that best conveys a message on environmental issues among all the films selected for the competition. The award will be presented on June 5, Environment Day. The SSFF & ASIA 2025 Environment Minister's Award goes to Iranian film, "Damji" by Director: Nazanin Chitsaz, which focuses on global warming and depicts a child collecting drops of wastewater and carrying them to a distant location. SSFF & ASIA is participating in the "Deco-Katsu Supporters," a government-led initiative that promotes and encourages the practice of a new, enriched lifestyle that contributes to decarbonization, in collaboration with companies and organizations. The film is available at the festival's online venue from Thursday, June 12. SSFF & ASIA established the "Stop Global Warming Competition" in 2008 in collaboration with the national campaign "Challenge 25 Campaign" to prevent global warming. "Global Warming Competition" was established in 2008 in conjunction with the 'Challenge 25 Campaign,' a national campaign to prevent global warming, and in 2013 it was reborn as "Save the Planet!" Since 2020, the festival has expanded the "Save the Planet!" awards to include more diverse global issues, with the aim of communicating the diversity of environmental issues to the entire planet. We hope that this work will help people to rethink environmental issues and create a desire for the future. We would be grateful if you could introduce this film to the public and cover the event. Why the award went to this film: In the drought-stricken lands of Iran, children naturally adopt water-saving habits in their daily lives, and their actions gradually spread to others. This beautifully illustrates the concept of the "butterfly effect," where small individual efforts lead to significant change and hope. The film effectively conveys environmental awareness through the genuine behavior of the children, all within just two minutes — a point that is highly commendable. Time is Running Out to Preserve Princess Diana's Legacy

The Princess Diana Museum Urges Immediate Donations Ahead of June 26 Auction LOS ANGELES, June 6, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- The Princess & The Platypus Foundation, the nonprofit behind The Princess Diana Museum, is making an urgent appeal ahead of a critical auction deadline. On June 26, 2025, Julien's Auctions will release a rare group of Princess Diana's personal items to the highest bidder—unless the Foundation can raise the necessary funds to preserve them for public access and future generations. The Foundation—owner and curator of the world's largest private collection of over 2,700 authenticated artifacts from Diana's life—is working quickly to secure these newly available, historically significant items before they are lost to private collectors. "These are not just objects for investment opportunists—they are a part of history and need to be preserved," said Renae Plant, Founder of The Princess Diana Museum. "They represent Diana's compassion, courage, and humanity. We must all come together now to keep them accessible to the world. Once they're gone, they could disappear from public view forever." For Plant, this mission is deeply personal. "My connection to Diana began in childhood," said Plant. "When I was twelve, I had the unforgettable opportunity to meet her during a visit to Australia. As she stepped into a black Rolls-Royce, she dropped a tiny clay platypus onto the ground. I rushed to return it, but a nearby policeman gently closed my hand and said, 'She must have dropped it to give it to you.' That quiet, graceful moment stayed with me — and unknowingly set me on the path to protect her legacy, not just with admiration, but with purpose." Plant met Diana a second time in Sydney in 1988, a moment forever tied to the now-iconic "Caring Dress," a bright blue colorful ensemble Diana frequently wore while visiting hospitals, children and humanitarian causes. "It was the dress she wore when she met me again," said Plant. "It has become a lasting symbol of her kindness, compassion, and commitment to others. It represents everything The Princess Diana Museum is about." "In October 2018, I was deeply honored to receive a letter from HRH Prince William and HRH Prince Harry, thanking me for informing them about the museum and my efforts to honor their mother's legacy. They shared that they were "most touched" by the work we are doing — a sentiment that moved me deeply and continues to guide every step I take in this journey" said Plant. The nonprofit's mission is to honor Diana's legacy through preservation, education, and charitable giving. The collection includes garments, handwritten letters, charity correspondence, and personal effects that span Diana's life—from her teenage years through her decades of humanitarian work. The Foundation has collaborated on major exhibitions with world-renowned institutions, including Historic Royal Palaces at Kensington Palace and The Kunstmuseum Den Haag. Beginning in 2026, it will launch a multi-year global tour of the collection, culminating in the creation of a permanent public exhibit in the United Kingdom. Immediate Action NeededWith just days left before the auction, the Foundation is calling on donors, sponsors, and supporters to help ensure these cultural treasures remain available to the public. Donations can be made directly to the Foundation PayPal account here: [ *All donations are tax deductible, according to California State and IRS Federal Regulations for non-profits and to the maximum specified on those regulations applicable in the United States of America.
