Novo Nordisk's CEO to step down amid market struggle
Wegovy and Ozempic-maker Novo Nordisk said today its CEO Lars Fruergaard Jorgensen will step down over concerns the company is losing its first-mover advantage in the highly competitive obesity drug market.
Under Jorgensen's leadership, Novo Nordisk became a world leader in the weight-loss drug market, with sky-rocketing sales of its Wegovy and Ozempic treatments which propelled its share price to become Europe's most valuable listed company.
However, its shares have plunged since hitting a record-high in June last year as competition, particularly from US rival Eli Lilly, makes inroads into its market share and as its pipeline of new drugs has failed to impress investors.
"The changes are made in light of the recent market challenges Novo Nordisk has been facing, and the development of the company's share price since mid-2024," Novo said in a statement.
Eli Lilly's US prescriptions for its Zepbound obesity shot have surpassed Wegovy since mid-March in its biggest market.
Jorgensen, 58, who has been CEO since 2017, will remain in the role until a new CEO has been appointed, the company said.
Former CEO of Novo Nordisk for 16 years and current chair of the Novo Nordisk Foundation, Lars Rebien Sorensen, will join the board as an observer with immediate effect with the aim of taking a seat at the next annual general meeting, Novo said.
Novo Nordisk is controlled by the Novo Nordisk Foundation through its investment arm which owns 77% of the voting shares.
"Considering the recent market challenges, the share price decline, and the wish from the Novo Nordisk Foundation, the Novo Nordisk Board and Lars Fruergaard Jorgensen have jointly concluded that initiating a CEO succession is in the best interest of the company and its shareholders," Novo Nordisk said.
Novo Nordisk's share price fell on the news, trading 3% lower this lunchtime, after trading 4% higher earlier in the day.
The shares are down 32% year-to-date and 59% from the all-time high in June last year.

Tax take to end of May up 3.6% on same time last year
Taxes collected by the State rose by 3.6% in the first five months of the year to €36.4bn, according to latest Exchequer Returns from the Department of Finance. When some funds from iPhone-maker Apple, which was forced to pay back taxes as part of settlement of up to €14bn to Ireland are included, the amount of tax collected was up 8.5%. Income tax, a key indicator of the health of the economy, was up by 4.5%, while VAT rose 5.5%. Corporation tax, including funds from Apple, was up 18% in the first five months of the year. However, if the Apple money is excluded, corporation tax is down 9.4% on the same period last year. Minister for Finance Paschal Donohoe said the drop was driven by one-off factors last year. But he added: "It nonetheless highlights the degree of concentration in the corporate tax base, where a small number of multinational firms can significantly impact on the overall tax yield." The figures also show Government spending was up 8% in the first five months of the year to €42bn which was close to its target. There was an exchequer surplus of €4bn in the five months to the end of May. But excluding the money from Apple the surplus was €700m. Minister Donohoe said: "May is one of the most important months for tax revenues and the steady growth in most tax headings points to an economy that is in a in a relatively good position."

She said: "I felt unable to find the will to care what I was shoving in my mouth. "It was compounded by the fact that I knew what I should be doing I just felt useless. I had to try something else." But she had a light bulb moment one day after sitting down to watch a bit of reality TV. The "So after a while when I heard about availability here, I went and spoke to my doctor because I haven't had diabetes but I just needed something. "I knew what had to be done, but I didn't have the willpower or the motivation to do anything. "I started Ozempic in November 2023, after the doctor thought it was a great idea. "I was on it until February this year and when I heard Mounjaro was coming in, I was eager to swap because I had lost 33 pounds on Ozempic and I kind of had stalled. "When I heard that Mounjaro was going to be approved for a weight loss here in Ireland, I thought, 'Right, I'm going to try and get it'. "I started taking it on the 25th of March and I began losing weight again." Sandra, who shares her journey on TikTok, said she was addicted to eating Doritos daily but a positive side effect of Mounjaro means she no longer has the desire to eat them. She said: "As far as day to day, you are probably wondering what exactly it does to me, but I find personally, it takes away all kind of interest that you would have in food. I lost 98lb on Mounjaro but it's surprise side benefit that's been life-changing "I was a grazer, food was so urgent, Doritos, especially. "I was getting up every evening, dragging my young one to the shop and just to go get Doritos. It felt like an urgency, a need. "I'd have a bag every night plus a Marvellous Creations bar – the big one, I didn't do small. "I was desperate for it, and the medications just take all that away, but I haven't changed what I eat. "I just eat when I'm hungry and I would fill my plate the way I always used to, but I would never ever get through a full plate of dinner the way I used to and I've lost 12 pounds now in the last 8.5 weeks. "So, it's been really, really positive." Sandra, who has lost three stone in total, said her grocery bill was "through the roof" as she satisfied her cravings. She said: "My husband was like, 'Where's all the money going?' and I was like we go to the shop every day after school and then I could have been back at the shop in the evening so it could have been €20 a day just on trash. "A bag of Doritos is €4, and a bar of Marvellous Creations is €4 and you're buying a can of Red Bull or Coca Cola and then stuff for the kids, it was easily €20."
