On Sunday, June 1, Aaron Castranova, 41, from Alabama, died after allegedly ingesting an ayahuasca brew at the La Casa de Guillermo ICONA hostel in Loreto, located in the Peruvian Amazon rainforest, Daily Mail, national outlets La Republica and Infobae reported. Castranova suffered multiple organ failure, with the presence of pleural effusion (fluid around the lungs) and acute pancreatitis,' Infobae reported, citing the regional prosecutor's forensic pathologist, Dr. Narciso López. López suggested that Castranova was on certain medications that, combined with consuming ayahuasca, can 'trigger serious adverse reactions,' per the outlet. Ayahuasca is a psychedelic brew containing the natural chemical dimethyltryptamine (DMT), found in the psychotria viridis plant leaves, which is illegal in the U.S. The brew has been used for centuries by indigenous peoples from Peru, Brazil, Colombia and Ecuador in religious rituals and for therapeutic purposes, according to the Alcohol and Drug Foundation. Castranova reportedly consumed the drink during a ritual in Santa Maria de Ojeda's indigenous community. Hostel managers claimed that he didn't inform the ceremony organizers he was on antibiotics ahead of the ritual, per the Daily Mail. Following his death, the authorities were alerted and Castronova's body was 'transported by river to the port of Bellavista Nanay and then transferred to the central morgue in Iquitos, where it remains pending claim by his family or the U.S. Embassy,' Infobae reported. No family members have come forward to the morgue or contacted Peruvian authorities regarding his death at this time. The U.S. Embassy has been called to coordinate the transfer of Catronova's body back to the U.S., per Infobae. The U.S. Embassy states that U.S. citizens visiting Peru should "NOT ingest or use traditional hallucinogens, often referred to as ayahuasca or kambo. These dangerous substances are often marketed to travelers in Peru as 'ceremonial' or 'spiritual cleansers.' " The embassy warns that ayahuasca can cause several negative health effects, including nausea, vomiting, increased heart rate, and even death as well as long-term effects of psychosis, difficulty sleeping, neurological diseases, and ongoing hallucinations. Israel says it has retrieved the body of a Thai hostage kidnapped into Gaza on Oct. 7, 2023

This comes two days after the bodies of two Israeli-American hostages were retrieved. Fifty-five hostages remain in Gaza, of whom Israel says more than half are dead. The defense minister said Saturday that Pinta's body was retrieved from the Rafah area. He had come to Israel from Thailand to work in agriculture. Advertisement The army said he was taken into Gaza by the Mujahideen Brigades, the small armed group that it said had also abducted and killed Shiri Bibas and her two small children. It's also the same group that took the two Israeli-American hostages, Judih Weinstein and Gad Haggai, whose bodies were retrieved by the army Thursday. Israel said it found Pinta's body based on information received from the hostage task force and military intelligence. A statement from the hostage forum, which supports the hostages, said it stands with Pinta's family and shares in their grief. It called on the country's decision makers to bring home the remaining hostages and give those who have died a proper burial. Thais were the largest group of foreigners held captive by Hamas militants. Many of the Thai agricultural workers lived in compounds on the outskirts of southern Israeli kibbutzim and towns, and Hamas militants overran those places first. A total of 46 Thais have been killed during the conflict, according to Thailand's Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Advertisement Before Pinta's body was retrieved, three Thai hostages remained in captivity and two were confirmed dead. The fate of Pinta was uncertain until today, according to the hostage forum. Israel continues its military campaign, with more deaths reported The retrieval of Pinta's body comes as Israel continues its military campaign across Gaza. Four strikes hit the Muwasi area in southern Gaza between Rafah and Khan Younis. In northern Gaza, one strike hit an apartment, killing seven people including a mother and five children. Their bodies were taken to Shifa hospital. Israel said Saturday that it's responding to Hamas' 'barbaric attacks' and is dismantling its capabilities. It said it follows international law and takes all feasible precautions to mitigate civilian harm. Reports say some of the dead were trying to get food aid Staff at Nasser hospital where six of the bodies were taken, said they were killed while on their way to get food assistance. Israel's army said Saturday that despite prior warnings that the area is an active combat zone during nighttime hours, several suspects attempted to approach army troops operating in the Tel al-Sultan area overnight 'in a manner that posed a threat to the troops'. The army said the troops called to drive them away but as they continued advancing they fired warning shots. The army said it was aware of reports of casualties. An army official who can't be named in line with military procedures, said the warning shots were fired approximately one kilometer (half a mile) from the aid distribution site. Advertisement Shootings have erupted frequently in the vicinity of new hubs where desperate Palestinians are being directed to collect food. The hubs are being run by the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation, a newly formed group of mainly American contractors. Israel wants GHF to replace humanitarian groups in Gaza that distribute aid in coordination with the U.N. Israel accuses Hamas of siphoning off aid under the U.N.-led system. But the U.N. and aid groups deny there is a significant diversion of aid to militants, and say the new system — which they have rejected — allows Israel to use food as a weapon, violates humanitarian principles and won't be effective. It was unclear if the sites opened on Saturday. Hamas-led militants killed some 1,200 people, mostly civilians, in the Oct. 7 attack and abducted 251 hostages. They are still holding 55 hostages, around a third of them believed to be alive, after most of the rest were released in ceasefire agreements or other deals. Israeli forces have rescued eight living hostages from Gaza and recovered dozens of bodies. Israel's military campaign has killed more than 54,000 Palestinians, mostly women and children, according to the Gaza Health Ministry, which does not distinguish between civilians and combatants. The offensive has destroyed large parts of Gaza and displaced around 90% of its population of roughly 2 million Palestinians.

Udall neighbors rattled after park restrooms set on fire — twice

UDALL, Kan. (KSNW) — You could smell it before you saw it — the charred remains of the city park restrooms, torched and melted from the inside out. Udall Police Chief Erik King is calling it arson and says it's unlike anything he's dealt with in town before. The damage is estimated at around $10,000. Loose tire injures two highway cyclists near Atwood 'This is where the trash can was right here in this corner,' King told KSN. 'Melted the alarms, melted the drains, melted the light switches.' Police say it happened Thursday around 4:30 in the afternoon. Then, just hours later, it happened again. 'The same person returned and, at about 8:40 at night, lit the boy's bathroom on fire, and that caused significant damage,' King said. 'It was on fire for 20 minutes before the alarm company notified us.' He says the timing couldn't be worse, with the Fourth of July just around the corner. Neighbors say the smoke drew their attention before they knew what was happening. 'I was doing yardwork and I had the boys, and a lady from out of town came up to the fence and asked if I had seen a person walking around,' said Skylar Kistler, who lives next to the park. That's when she noticed the smoke coming from the bathroom. 'It kind of made us, I guess, feel protective, like a little more protective, like kind of upset that anybody would do that,' she said. Her husband Tylor says the damage is personal. 'I've lived here my whole life, so it's kind of nice to have a park like this with a splashpad, and you know everything here for the boys right in our backyard, and it's just kind of bad. This is a good building, and it's terrible,' he said. Chief King says the person believed to be responsible has been arrested and is currently being held in juvenile detention. In the meantime, the city is bringing in port-a-potties, and repairs could take up to two months. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
