Storms bring down trees, knock power out for thousands
A line of severe storms that pushed through north Georgia has knocked out power for thousands on Wednesday morning.
As of 6:45 a.m., the largest Georgia Power outages are in Floyd County (1,293), Polk County (1,947), Gordon County (829), Haralson County (702), Fulton County (692) and Cherokee County (511).
Georgia EMC reports its largest outages are in the west region, where 3,400 customers don't have power.
In Gilmer County, the school district has decided to close 'due to widespread power outages and road closings.' All 12 month employees and administrators will report.

The storms also brought down trees. Severe Weather Team 2 received multiple reports of trees and power poles down in Pickens County.
Channel 2′s Brittany Kleinpeter was stuck in traffic on Hwy 53 near Edwards Road, where the sheriff's office said a power pole was blocking all lanes of travel. It reopened around 6 a.m.
Back in Atlanta, Channel 2′s Michael Doudna found a tree that snapped and landed across Ormewood Ave just off Boulevard in Grant Park.
Doudna learned that power in the area may not be restored until 9 a.m.

‘Extreme weather' damages Dunwoody home, causes power outages
A fast-moving, quick storm rolled through a Dunwoody neighborhood in DeKalb County Saturday night. Power was knocked out and trees toppled over near Glenbonnie Drive and Peeler Road. One of the homes damaged belonged to a family whose neighbors say just moved in days ago. Jennifer Rao saw the destruction and said, 'you can see the insulation, you can see inside of their house, it's scary.' Georgia Power reported around 9 p.m. that close to 400 customers were without power in the area. The utility company said, 'Extreme weather caused widespread outages.' 'It was blowing really hard,' said Quinton Alberto. 'The trees in the back were swaying back and forth for a minute.' Georgia Power did not have an estimate of the number of crews that were out working or when power would be restored. However, the company encourages customers to sign up for text alerts so that they can get updates immediately. DeKalb County Fire said no one was injured in the home that was damaged by the toppled tree. Strawberry Festival prepares for thousands of visitors with rain in the forecast
It will be a busy weekend for the Troy Strawberry Festival with organizers expecting at least 150,000 visitors. They say they are prepared, and have a plan in case of inclement weather. Ovenshire grew up in Troy and remembers the past Strawberry Festivals. 'As a little kid, we were on the levee, you know, and there was hardly anything up here, and it just kept getting bigger and bigger,' Ovenshire said. The city started prepping for the festival Thursday morning by putting up barriers. 'You don't want to have that always on the back of your mind,' Ovenshire said. 'Like, man, what if this isn't as safe as it used to be?' Jessica Silver is the head chair of the Strawberry Festival. Silver says they have shaded areas for festival goers. 'Festival location that our volunteers can come in and like, take rests and have some water,' Silver said. 'We also have EMS present on both locations and we have Kettering Health here.' Ovenshire recommends checking the weather before heading out to the festival. 'You know the forecast, it's not that bad,' Ovenshire said. 'And people still come out no matter what.' Threat of strong, severe storms Friday night through Saturday morning
We have to stay weather aware this weekend – another system is going to bring multiple rounds of strong and potentially severe storms across north Georgia. [DOWNLOAD: Free WSB-TV News app for alerts as news breaks] There is a higher level of risk for the north and northwest part of the state, but still some risk for metro Atlanta and areas south and east. Late Friday night through early on Saturday morning, scattered severe storms could produce damaging wind gusts and large hail, as well as a low risk of a brief tornado.
