Ireland has warmest spring in 126 years
Spring this year had the highest average temperature ever experienced in 126 years of records held by Met Eireann, it has said. This year marked the first spring that was more than two degrees higher than the 20th century average for the same period. Advertisement Overall, it was the sunniest spring on record, with most stations recording highest values for total hours of sunshine in spring, according to the meteorological service. The season's highest temperature was reported at Athenry in Co Galway on Wednesday with a temperature of 25.9C – the highest daily maximum spring temperature in 15 years of records. Spring 2025 was also relatively dry, provisionally ranking as the 16th driest since records began in 1941, and the driest since 2020. As a result of the warmer, sunnier and calmer conditions, a marine heatwave developed off the west coast of Ireland through April and May with sea surface temperatures reaching over 2C warmer than average in some coastal areas, and up to 4C warmer than average in offshore areas. Advertisement The latest Met Eireann statistics show that Ireland had its warmest and sunniest meteorological spring on record this year. Blocking high pressure dominated through most of the season, bringing a lot of sunshine with it, it added. It said that this, along with predominantly easterly winds due to the high-pressure systems often setting up just to the north of Ireland and the UK, led to sea surface temperatures to the south and west of Ireland reaching record high levels during April and May. All three months saw air temperatures well above average at the majority of stations, leading to all but a few stations in the east having their warmest spring on record. Advertisement March was mild, dry and sunny, with high pressure dominating through most of the month with weak steering currents aloft, it added. April was warm and sunny overall. The first half of the month was dominated by high pressure to the north bringing a dry easterly airflow. The second half of the month saw a wetter spell for a couple of weeks, where Atlantic low pressure dominated and brought several spells of heavy rain, especially to the Midlands, South and East. It settled down again towards the end of the month with high pressure bringing record warmth for April. Advertisement May continued the theme of high-pressure dominance for much of the month. Blocking high pressure set up just to the north brought an easterly airflow with plenty of sunshine. The settled spell broke for the last week of the season, with Atlantic low pressure breaking through and bringing spells of rain or showers. Twenty-three of 25 stations had their warmest spring on record. Advertisement Only Dunsany in Co Meath had its second warmest and Dublin Airport had its joint third warmest. Oak Park in Co Carlow, Moore Park, Co Cork, Athenry, Co Galway and Casement, Co Dublin recorded their warmest spring on record for the third consecutive years, while Roches Point, Co Cork and Markree, Co Sligo had their warmest spring for the second year in a row.

Met Office map shows MASSIVE band of rain soaking UK as thunder & gales to hit just days after sunniest Spring on record
THE UK is set to face a huge band of rain - just days after registering its sunniest Spring on record. The Met Office has reported that Britons could face a wet spell as a band of rain moved southeastwards overnight. 3 3 The band of rain reached the west coast of the UK at around 6pm yesterday. It continued to move southeastwards overnight, reaching cities like Birmingham and Manchester in the early hours of the morning. Met Office meteorologist Alex Burkill said: "In the southeast it's largely fine for the time being. "But that front's going to continue southeastwards so southeastern parts turning pretty grey and a bit damp as we go through the morning and into the early afternoon." As the day continues, Brits can expect to see rainy showers becoming a bit more widespread, accompanied by strong winds. This could be particularly strong in the north, with coastal gales expected for northern Scotland. Alex added: "A bit of thunder definitely isn't out of the question." Higher temperatures are expected in the Midlands as they are set to avoid most of the bad weather. Cold air is following the front, with temperatures dropping across the UK after what has been the sunniest spring on record. Overnight, temperatures are expected to drop even further with many areas falling into the single digits. Scotland set for more record-breaking spring sunshine before rain brings end to 'mini-heatwave' Showers are likely to continue into Wednesday, becoming heavier as the day progresses. Temperatures are still remaining fairly mild with the chance for brief periods of sunshine throughout the day. Thursday is likely to be yet another rainy day, as Alex says: "Nowhere really guaranteed to stay dry." The outlook for the rest of the week from Thursday to Saturday is expected to be "cool, largely cloudy and breezy over the next few days, with showers or longer spells of rain. "Prolonged spells of heavy rain are likely across the south at times." This "unsettled weather" is set to continue into mid June with periods of rain and strong winds affecting the UK. Moving into the second half of June, the Met Office has predicted more "dry and sunny periods, perhaps with a bias towards longer dry spells early in the period." Met Office's 3-5 day weather forecast revealed Tuesday May 3 Cloud and rain will gradually move across England and Wales, eventually clearing the southeast later this afternoon. Sunny spells and blustery showers elsewhere. Windy, particularly in the north with coastal gales for northern Scotland. Cooler than recent days. Wednesday May 4 Sunny spells and showers across Northern Ireland, Scotland and northern England. Drier in the south, although turning cloudier with a few scattered showers by the afternoon. Breezy. Thursday May 5 - Saturday May 7 Cool, largely cloudy and breezy over the next few days, with showers or longer spells of rain. Prolonged spells of heavy rain are likely across the south at times. Higher temperatures can be expected at times, particularly in the south. It comes following a double record breaker spring, as it was the warmest and sunniest on record. It surpassed the previous 2024 record with the highest mean temperature since the survey began in 1884. Reaching an average temperature of 9.5 Celsius, temperatures were 1.4 above the long-term average. In addition to the warmer weather, the UK experienced 653.3 hours of sunshine - 43% above the average and the highest since records began in 1910. These higher temperatures were accompanied by very low rainfall, experiencing the driest spring in over 100 years by mid-May. 3

JoJo Siwa 'signs up to Great British Bake Off' after taking Celebrity Big Brother by storm - as she confirms she's dating Chris Hughes
JoJo Siwa has signed up to the Stand up to Cancer special of The Great British Bake Off after taking Celebrity Big Brother by storm. The 21-year-old Dance Moms star's high-flying career is just beginning, after she became a fan-favourite on the ITV reality show. She has reportedly been filming for the celebrity spin-off, which is set to return this spring. A source told The Sun: 'This is a bit of a coup for the Bake Off because Jojo is currently one of the most talked about young stars on TV right now. 'She's barely had time to catch her breath, leaving CBB last month amid huge media attention and heading straight into another huge show this month.' From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the DailyMail's new Showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. They added that it's a 'fantastic gig for her' because although she already has a fanbase over here, the baking show will also introduce her to a wider British audience. It would appear that cooking is JoJo's love language, as she's been spending a lot of time at home with Chris making meals together. The star shared a glimpse into her chilled date night in with Chris as he cooked for her at his place. JoJo filmed the Love Island star cooking a creamy chicken dish as he got her to taste a bite off a spoon before they sat down to eat and she revealed she 'ate every bite'. She recently revealed her 'favourite' thing about her new man, during a Q&A with her 11.3million followers. JoJo said: 'Gosh lots of things, but the first thing that comes to my mind is the way he treats everyone... Strangers, friends, family, me, literally everyone. 'I've never seen somebody who acknowledges everyone in the room the way that he always does. Everyone gets a hello, everyone gets, how are you doing... and it's genuine. Beautiful beautiful soul he is'. In another post, the dancer shared a series of pictures from her tour dates as she revealed it is the first time in five years that she is 'not trying to convince herself' that she is happy in her 'personal and professional' life. She wrote: 'London… processing the last few days. The last 2 nights were more than just concerts - they were moments I will never forget. 'There's no way to quite explain how content and how happy I have been feeling personally and professionally. 'I don't feel the need to convince anyone because for the first time since I was 17 I'm not trying to convince myself of that.' The sweet date comes after Chris revealed his relationship status with JoJo, after JoJo confirmed their romance with a sweet on-stage tribute. The reality TV star had a simple one-word answer when asked whether he and JoJo were in a relationship. Chris answered: 'Happy. That's my relationship status - happy. Yeah, I'm just happy that's good. I'm happy with that.' Despite the guarded answer, he still gushes about his close relationship with JoJo, admitting that she's become his 'favourite topic of conversation.'
