Confident Cokanasiga is edging back into England contention

Yahoo04-04-2025

Matt Banahan knows just how valuable a big winger can be in rugby, so it is little wonder that he has enjoyed Joe Cokanasiga's resurgence at Bath.
Now 27, it is seven years since Cokanasiga first got capped by England two days after his 20th birthday but he has played only once under Steve Borthwick, in a World Cup warm-up match against Wales.
It's a big night for Gallagher Premiership leaders Bath on Friday out in Pau (live on Premier Sports 2 from 7.55pm) as they now look to add an EPCR Challenge Cup crown to the Premiership Rugby Cup title they have already won this season. And Cokanasiga looks back to his very best as they chase an incredible treble.
For long-time Bath winger Banahan, his performances are a reflection of just how strong his former club have been in recent weeks.
He said: 'Bath have found an unbelievable flow, they are blowing teams away at the moment.
'If you look at Bath with the way they get wingers into space, I've seen big Joe carrying more in the last two or three months than I've ever seen him carry. He's in space, he's finding opportunities to carry in one-on-ones and he's a big unit. He gets them over the gain line.
'Since just before Christmas, he is finding the form that everyone thought was going to come years ago before the injuries."

Banahan, who is part of the Scotland women's coaching set-up, is a key member of the Premier Sports punditry team this weekend as international club rugby's knockout action returns. With 12 live EPCR games this weekend, it's wall-to-wall rugby on the UK broadcaster, and they have added further global competitions to their offering in the form of Japan's JLR1 and USA's Major League Rugby.
The two leagues will be shown as part of a new 24/7 rugby channel, Premier Sports Rugby, while the broadcaster will now host more than 400 live rugby games every season from competitions across 11 rugby nations.
But this weekend is all about international club rugby with the return of the EPCR Challenge Cup and Investec Champions Cup. Banahan will do the West Country double, also covering another of his former clubs, Gloucester, as they also travel to France to take on a Montpellier team featuring the likes of Billy Vunipola and Sam Simmonds.
With Tomos Williams going viral at the weekend with his stunning no-look try assist in the Cherry & Whites' big win over Bristol Bears, Banahan believes he has put himself right back into the conversation for British & Irish Lions selection.
And for Banahan, the decision over which scrum-halves join Leinster and Ireland's Jamison Gibson-Park may be one of the hardest for Andy Farrell, with Northampton Saints' Alex Mitchell and Toulon's Scotland international Ben White also in fine form.
Banahan added: 'There is an interesting question at nine. Jamison Gibson-Park is there, but then Tomos Williams is finding a bit of form and you have Alex Mitchell for England.
"There's a question of squad balance, is he going to take four scrum-halves or three? If it's three, who misses out of the four scrum-halves? Does Ben White miss out because he's in France, even though he is playing for Scotland?
'Gibson-Park is a shoo-in, he's been the in-form nine for years and I don't think anyone will jump him.
"We don't know what the contracts are like with the French clubs, if the clubs will release them straightaway, but scrum-half and hooker are the big calls for me.'

Boardman: 'He's going to become the next Michael Owen'

Scouser Spirit: Boardman and Reid Reflect on Liverpool's Triumph and Trent's Departure Champions of England and Champions of Character Liverpool's recent triumph has stirred more than just celebratory scenes—it's been a moment of deep pride for Reds around the world. On the Scouser Tommies podcast from Anfield Index, hosts Jim Boardman and Jay Reid captured the essence of what it means to be a Red in 2025. 'Liverpool are the champions of England. We won the league,' Jim opened, adding, 'I can't get that image out of my head…Virgil just… looking up at the trophy with absolute glee.' Advertisement Jay, who had a remarkable week—title win, parade, and wedding—said of the celebrations, 'The songs were red… win the league on Sunday, parade on Monday, married on Friday.' He joked about planning his anniversary around the Champions League final: 'Your first anniversary of your wedding… it's usually marked by paper… so a plane ticket to Budapest and a match ticket… how does that work?' Trent's Real Madrid Move: Betrayal or Bold Step? A major talking point was Trent Alexander-Arnold's move to Real Madrid. The tone was scathing. 'He's gone from being potentially one of the big names in the Liverpool museum… to a footnote in the history of Real Madrid,' said Jim. Jay echoed the disappointment: 'He's literally going to become the next Michael Owen in terms of status at Liverpool and Real Madrid.' Advertisement Jay compared Trent's exit with Owen's, noting, 'Michael Owen's career at Real Madrid will not be… a whole section of the Santiago Bernabéu Museum.' He added, 'He's got to go a hell of a long way if he's going to create a legacy that he was on his way to creating at Liverpool.' Trent's motivations were heavily criticised. Jim remarked, 'He had two pretty decent choices… but I can't help but think he's going to be wondering a lot more about what he's done.' Jay didn't pull punches: 'He's not even known as Alexander-Arnold anymore… he's had to change his name… he's probably a little bit embarrassed.' Photo: IMAGO New Era Under Slot and Transfer Confidence Turning to the future, the hosts showed strong optimism under manager Arne Slot. 'We've been putting our hands in our pockets,' said Jim. The acquisition of Jeremie Frimpong was met with enthusiasm: 'It sounds like a bargain,' and Jay observed, 'He's exciting and explosive… whether we'll see him at right back all the time I don't know.' Advertisement The imminent signing of Florian Wirtz was a highlight. Jay described the buzz in Germany: 'Vertz was the most popular name… not Musiala, not Müller… Vertz was the one.' Jim drew comparisons to Torres: 'We've not signed a player with such a persona and excitement around them since Fernando Torres.' Both hosts agreed that FSG's financial moves had been smart. 'We've had a few years where we've not spent money… now it's exciting when you're the champions and you go and do this,' said Jay. Scouse Solidarity and City Pride The podcast wasn't just about football. It celebrated Liverpool's character. Jim shared, 'There were people online offering… bedrooms, food, warm clothing… lifts to different parts of the Northwest,' in response to poor parade logistics. Jay added, 'That makes you proud to be a Scouser… proud to be from Liverpool… proud to be a Liverpool fan.' Advertisement The pair poked fun at the Real Madrid-bound full-back with a viral jab from Liverpool Airport: 'He even flew from Manchester,' quoting their infamous tweet. 'The whole shenanigans and story around Trent… he couldn't even fly out of Liverpool Airport,' Jay said, to which Jim laughed, 'That tells you all you need to know.' Looking Ahead Jay summed up the moment: 'We're the champions… and we're signing one of the best players in Europe.' Jim closed with, 'Let's just enjoy every single minute of it.'

Chris Wilder out as Sheffield United's US owners make managerial change

SHEFFIELD, England (AP) — Sheffield United parted ways with manager Chris Wilder on Wednesday after failing to secure a return to the Premier League. The club, which came under American ownership in late December, immediately installed Ruben Selles as Wilder's replacement. Advertisement Sheffield United lost to Sunderland in the Championship playoff final at Wembley Stadium last month to miss out on promotion. Wilder was in his second spell at the Yorkshire club after leading it to promotion in his first stint from 2016-21. 'A Blade through and through, the legacy Chris and his staff have created here will never be forgotten,' Sheffield United said in a statement. U.S.-based COH Sports completed the purchase of Sheffield United in late December. The group is led by Steven Rosen and Helmy Eltoukhy, who became the club's co-chairmen. ___ AP soccer: The Associated Press
