Brook's 99, Bumrah's five-fer even out Day 3
Leeds, June 22 (UNI) Harry Brook's enterprising 99 and key contributions from England's lower order wiped out India's hard-earned advantage on the third day of the first Test at Headingley, despite a five-wicket haul by Jasprit Bumrah.
Resuming at 327/5, England rode on a brisk 91-ball 99 from Brook and solid partnerships down the order to post 465 in reply to India's 471. The last six English wickets added a crucial 240 runs – a stark contrast to India's 41 from their final six – to help the hosts narrow the deficit to just six runs.
Bumrah finished with 5/83, his 14th Test five-fer, but England's depth meant the effort did not give India the control they would have hoped for.
In response, India began their second innings in overcast and blustery conditions, and lost opener Yashasvi Jaiswal early. However, K L Rahul (47* off 78) and debutant Sai Sudharsan (32) stitched together a stabilising 66-run stand to take India to 90/2 at stumps, with a 96-run lead.
Earlier in the day, Brook continued from where he left off, punishing Indian bowlers for lapses in discipline and fielding. He added 55 with skipper Ben Stokes (35) and 56 with Jamie Smith (27) as England counterattacked effectively. India's fielding woes also resurfaced – Rishabh Pant dropped Brook, and Sudharsan couldn't hold a tough chance at short-leg to dismiss Smith.
Post-lunch, Brook found another ally in Woakes (34), and together they added 49 runs at a rapid pace. Brook surged into the 90s with a six and a four off Siraj but fell agonisingly short of his century, top-edging a pull off Prasidh Krishna to the deep. Woakes and Brydon Carse added another 55 runs to frustrate India further before Bumrah cleaned up the tail with two successive bowled dismissals.
India's second innings saw a nervy start under light drizzle, with Jaiswal falling early to Carse. Rahul looked composed, mixing defence with crisp drives, while Sudharsan showed resilience after a pair in the first innings. The duo negotiated probing spells from Woakes, Tongue and Stokes, before Sudharsan (32) fell late in the session to a flick that found short midwicket. Shubman Gill hit a boundary to get going and stayed unbeaten alongside Rahul when rain forced early stumps.
India will look to extend their lead on Day 4, knowing that a strong batting effort is needed to put pressure back on England after the hosts' impressive fightback.
Brief scores:
India: 471 & 90/2 (KL Rahul 47*; Ben Stokes 1/18)
England: 465 (Ollie Pope 106, Harry Brook 99, Ben Duckett 62; Jasprit Bumrah 5/83, Prasidh Krishna 3/128)
India lead by 96 runs.

Prithvi Shaw to follow Arjun Tendulkar? Mumbai batter seeks NOC to switch states in domestic cricket, says report
Prithvi Shaw has taken the path followed by his childhood friend Arjun Tendulkar and sought a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) to play for another state. The 25-year-old Shaw, who is currently out-of-contention from the Indian team, didn't had the best of seasons domestically for the past couple of years and has been in and out of the Mumbai team. The dashing Mumbai opener has been embroiled in controversies recently. Even the MCA accused Shaw of disciplinary issues and deemed him unfit. According to a Hindustan Times report, Shaw has received offers from a couple of state teams earlier this month. "Yes, Prithvi Shaw has written a letter to us, seeking a No-Objection Certificate. We are just discussing it with the Apex Council members. We will make our decision by today evening," MCA secretary Abhay Hadap confirmed to the newspaper. Earlier, Shaw's Mumbai teammate Yashasvi Jaiswal decided to play for Goa and also had sought NOC, but did a U-turn after a couple of weeks. Arjun, who is the son of legendary Sachin Tendulkar, had started his domestic career for Mumbai in T20s. However, sensing lack of opportunities in the Mumbai senior team. Arjun switched to Goa and made his Ranji Trophy debut for them in 2022 against Rajasthan. In his letter to MCA, Shaw stated that he has been offered to play professional cricket with another team. 'At this juncture in my career, I have been presented with a promising opportunity to play professional cricket under another State Association, which I believe will further contribute to my growth and development as a cricketer.' "In light of this, I kindly request you to issue me a No Objection Certificate (NOC) that will enable me to officially represent the new State Association in the upcoming domestic season,' added Shaw. Shaw first came into limelight when he led the Indian team to the U-19 World Cup win 2018 in New Zealand. The squad also featured Shubman Gill, who is currently the Indian Test team captain. The same year Shaw made his India senior team debut against West Indies in Tests. In all, Shaw played five Tests, six ODIs and a lone T20I for India. The last season Shaw was dropped from Mumbai's Ranji Trophy squad citing fitness concerns. Recently, Shaw had also featured for Northamptonshire in England's One Day Cup.

IND vs ENG: 'Two brilliant things to watch in cricket...' - Ex-England cricketer compares Jasprit Bumrah to Australian legend
LEEDS, ENGLAND - JUNE 22: Jasprit Bumrah of India appeals during Day Three of the 1st Rothesay Test Match between England and India at Headingley on June 22, 2025 in Leeds, England. (Photo by) Former England captain Nasser Hussain has compared Jasprit Bumrah 's masterclass to legendary Australian cricketer Shane Warne . "There are two brilliant things to watch in cricket — a wrist spinner like Shane Warne bamboozling batters and a genuine fast bowler like Bumrah bamboozling batters,' Hussain said on Sky Cricket. Hussain hopes the Indian spearhead remains injury-free so that fans can enjoy his skill set. "Hopefully he stays injury-free and we talk about him for years to come," he said. Jasprit Bumrah press conference: Lashes out at critics, dropped catches and no balls Bumrah picked up his 14th five-wicket haul in England's first innings and left the former England captain spellbound. Bumrah took 5 for 83 in the opening Test. "He is absolute genius. That is the only word for him. You wouldn't want to replicate him; you wouldn't want to tell young boys and girls to go replicate this run-up or this action,' he said. 'He knows what he is doing, he has perfected an art, and he is going to be a thorn in England's side — not for five Tests, maybe three. In those three Test matches, he is going to take a shedload of wickets,' he added. India were guilty of spilling several catches, but Bumrah chose not to dwell on the lapses, preferring instead to focus on what lies ahead. "Yeah, just for a second. But you understand that you can't really sit down and cry, isn't it? You have to move forward with the game. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 2025 Top Trending local enterprise accounting software [Click Here] Esseps Learn More Undo So, what I look to do is not to take it too far in my head and try to quickly forget it because all of them are also new to the game," Bumrah told reporters. "Sometimes the ball is difficult to sight and nobody is dropping the catch purposely. Everybody is trying really hard. It does happen. So, I don't want to create a scene or put more pressure on the fielder by showing that I'm angry, kicking the box, or doing something. It's okay. "It's part and parcel of the game. Obviously, if it (the catches) had been taken earlier, that's good, but people will learn from this experience," he added. Game On Season 1 kicks off with Sakshi Malik's inspiring story.
