Pals pool in money, make an ‘oasis' of barren village on Dalma foothills
Jamshedpur: In 2019, two friends—John Junul Soy (54) and Sukumar Kumar (51) were on a pleasure trip to Katjol village, located at the foothills of Dalma sanctuary on the city outskirts around NH-33.
While they were charmed by the scenic greens and the vicinity, they learnt about the water woes faced by local villagers, spotting women carrying pots on their heads from far off place.
The two decided to create a water body. Six years later, the pond, which spreads over 21 bighas is not just a place for nature lovers to unwind in calmness but has also come as a boon for the inhabitants and local flora and fauna. Talking to TOI, Soy said, "The villagers were experiencing problems sourcing water for household needs, and the land remained uncultivated due to the want of any irrigation source."
A resident of Jawaharnagar in Mango, Soy runs a nursery and is also an avid environment lover. His friend, Sukumar, a Sonari resident, is also a keen angler. "We began interacting with the locals without a plan. Initially, some had apprehensions but slowly we decided to do it through community participation to induce sense of ownership among all," he said, adding that Rs 75 lakh, raised through donations was invested to construct the pond.
"It took four years for the pond to come up," said Kumar. He added, "The interesting aspect is that that we did not fell the six big sal and palash trees to make way for the water body. In fact, we constructed a platform around the trees so that they can stand amid the pond. It looks beautiful today."
The pond holds the rainwater which flows down from the Dalma Hills during heavy rains. "The village, which houses 170 families, now has water for daily chores," he said, adding that it also opened source of income for locals through fishing. "The pond has also encouraged the villagers to cultivate crops, and animals such as monkeys and peacocks quench their thirst at the pond," said Soy. Once struggling for water, locals now have taken up poultry, pig and fish farming and planting fruit bearing trees.
"The land was leased to the duo for the pond. Today, the pond has impacted the lives in a positive way," Anand Singh, gram Pradhan of Katjol village, said.

Eid celebrated with unity, devotion
1 2 Trichy: Across central and southern Tamil Nadu, people came together to mark Eid-al-Adha (Bakrid) with prayer, kindness, and a sense of community. From early morning, Muslims across Trichy and Madurai gathered to offer prayers, share meals, and help those in need — reflecting the spirit of sacrifice, gratitude, and togetherness that the festival stands for. More than 300 people assembled at the Eidgah grounds in Cantonment and Uzhavar Sandhai in Thennur to offer prayers around 7 am. Common prayers were also held at several mosques in areas such as Pallakarai and E. Pudur. Draped in a mosaic of hijabs — florals, pastels, deep tones — women stood shoulder to shoulder, offering heartfelt duas. From young girls mimicking elders to elderly women whispering quiet prayers, the scenes captured the emotional depth and spirit of Eid. As part of the festival, Qurbani, the sacred sacrifice of a goat, was performed. After the sacrifice, a portion of the meat is traditionally donated to the poor and needy. Families also invited friends and relatives to their homes to celebrate the occasion. The festival was marked by the exchange of sweets and delicacies, especially biryani, with neighbours and loved ones. "It's a tradition every year that our friend invites us for biryani at his place during the festival," said Sairam from Karumandapam. As Eid is a public holiday, Trichy hotels experienced a surge in demand for biryani, particularly through online food delivery platforms.

Madikeri: Former students undertook an ambitious project to renovate a govt school with the aim of transforming it into an exemplary educational institution. The Suntikoppa Government Primary School, established 108 years ago, and the Suntikoppa High School, established 44 years ago, are being developed at a cost of Rs 12 lakh. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The alumni initiated this project as a gratitude to the institution that provided them with education and career opportunities. Approximately 60% of the restoration work, including painting and woodwork, was completed. Key alumni members KH Sharif, Harish, Anil Kumar, C Mahendra, Razak, Abdul Aziz, Arun Kumar, Dhanu Kaverappa, Vincent, Shashikumar, and Kamal Haasan, alongside local donors from Suntikoppa and neighbouring areas, committed to elevating the school's standards to match private institutions. On Jan 19, 2025, the group organised an event, bringing together past and present teachers from the primary, secondary, and undergraduate colleges. The alumni association hosted a Guru Vandana ceremony and reunion, demonstrating their commitment to the school's development. The alumni association has stepped forward to address both infrastructure development and the declining enrolment of students. Recent years saw a dip in the number of students getting admissions across both institutions, despite qualified teaching staff, largely due to the competition from private schools. The alumni association plans to distribute free books to students in June, highlighting their dedication to educational support. Government schools alumni association president MS Sunil said, "Alumni members showed particular dedication during the renovation, regularly assisting with construction requirements and supporting workers, demonstrating remarkable commitment to the project." Suntikoppa GMP School headmistress Geetha said, "The alumni's recent efforts in renovating the school is truly commendable." Alumni association's vice-president RH Sharif said, "This renovation represents our modest contribution to the institution that shaped our lives. Our association remains committed to supporting the school's needs."
