Instant noodles vs fine dining? Singaporeans mock Pentagon chief's Donald Trump–Lee Kuan Yew comparison
SINGAPORE, May 31 — US Secretary of Defence Pete Hegseth rankled Singaporeans today by likening President Donald Trump to the city-state's late founding premier Lee Kuan Yew.
In a major speech outlining US strategy in the Asia-Pacific region, Hegseth referred to both leaders as 'historic men'.
'Like the late prime minister, President Trump's approach is grounded in common sense and national interests,' he said at the Shangri-La Dialogue which gathers key defence leaders from around the world.
Lee, a British-trained lawyer, served as Singapore's prime minister for three decades.
Hegseth praised his 'sage leadership and strategic vision'.
'That's what common sense policies can achieve, and that's precisely what President Trump's vision is all about.'
Lee, who turned Singapore into a high-tech industrial and financial centre, remains highly revered in Singapore more than a decade after his death.
Social media erupted with loud and acerbic criticism of Hegseth's comparison.
'One is historic, the other is hysteric,' said one commenter, while another remarked: 'Trump compared to Lee Kuan Yew? That's like saying instant noodles are the same as fine dining.'
'I felt a tremor just now. Must be LKY rolling hard in his grave,' said someone else on social media, using Lee's initials. — AFP

Myanmar junta extends ceasefire again following quake

(AP pic) YANGON : Myanmar's junta has extended a post-earthquake truce, after the expiry of a previous humanitarian ceasefire it was accused of flouting with a continued campaign of air strikes. The junta initially declared a truce in the many-sided civil war after a huge quake in late March killed nearly 3,800 people and left tens of thousands homeless. The truce has been extended before, although conflict monitors say fighting has continued, including regular air strikes. A statement from the junta information team yesterday said there would be an extension of the armistice – which expired May 31 – until June 30. This would 'facilitate rehabilitation and reconstruction activities in earthquake-affected areas', it said in the statement. It added that the state was 'intensively engaging in reconstruction of damaged government offices and departments, public residences and transport facilities'. The ceasefire would also allow the country to hold 'a free and fair multi-party democracy general election', according to the statement. The country's junta chief said earlier this year that a long-promised election will be held by January, the first in the war-torn nation since the military staged a coup in 2021. In the statement, the military also warned it would still strike back against any offensives by the array of ethnic armed groups and anti-coup fighters. The announcement comes after Malaysian foreign minister Mohamad Hasan used a regional meeting last week to call for the extension and expansion of a ceasefire 'beyond the currently affected zones'. Malaysia currently holds the rotating chairmanship of the 10-country Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean). The bloc has led so far fruitless diplomatic efforts to end Myanmar's conflict since the junta deposed civilian leader Aung San Suu Kyi in February 2021.

Drama around Tengku Zafrul's exit seems orchestrated, says Kedah Umno

PETALING JAYA : Kedah Umno is uncomfortable with what it has called 'a drama' and 'political manoeuvres' orchestrated by PKR following Tengku Zafrul Aziz's decision to quit Umno. Kedah Umno information chief Shaiful Hazizy Zainol Abidin said the statements released by PKR vice-president Amirudin Shari and PKR Youth chief Kamil Munim make the entire matter seem 'planned and celebrated'. 'The series of statements from PKR figures seem to send a direct message to Umno that etiquette does not matter in our cooperation and that political moves can be arranged without regard for the sensitivities of the main partners in the unity government,' he said in a statement today. Shaiful called for a stop to the 'drama' surrounding Tengku Zafrul for the sake of stable, honest and sincere political cooperation. 'We cannot continue to sacrifice our principles for the sake of power. Umno is ready to cooperate, not to be a plaything in the political narratives of others.' Shaiful also branded Tengku Zafrul, who is the investment, trade and industry minister, a 'first-class political tourist'. Yesterday, Amirudin said Tengku Zafrul's entry into PKR could bolster the party's credibility and expressed confidence that they could work well together. Kamil said Tengku Zafrul, being a corporate figure, could bring 'added value' to the party given the latter's experience. However, PKR secretary-general Fuziah Salleh said any such application to join the party would have to go through the usual processes, taking into account the views and perspectives of the party's partners in the unity government. Tengku Zafrul's decision confirms rumours that spread in February that he would be leaving Umno and joining PKR before his term as a senator expires at the year end.

Nurul Izzah mooted 2nd deputy president's post, says Rafizi
Nurul Izzah Anwar had made the offer three days before PKR delegates cast their votes in the central leadership elections, said Rafizi Ramli. AMPANG JAYA : Rafizi Ramli who was defeated at the PKR elections last month, says Nurul Izzah Anwar had previously suggested the creation of an appointed post of PKR deputy president for Rafizi to fill. Rafizi said the offer, which he rejected, was made by Nurul Izzah at a meeting three days before PKR delegates cast their ballots in the party's central leadership elections. 'When she met me, she tried to propose having an appointed deputy president – me. But even if it were to be an appointed party president, I'm not interested, all the more other party posts,' he said today. 'Because this isn't a question of posts but the message we want to convey,' he said when met at an event organised by his Pandan parliamentary office here today. Rafizi failed to secure re-election as deputy president last month, losing to Nurul Izzah who received 9,803 votes to his 3,866 votes. He subsequently offered his resignation from his Cabinet post as economy minister. He said today that he will resume his duties as a normal MP and the head of the party's Pandan division. He is on leave from his official duties while his resignation is effective June 17. Rafizi had previously revealed that he had rejected a last-ditch appeal from Nurul Izzah to help her after the party polls ended. Rafizi said he believed that her plea stemmed from concerns over the new leadership lineup, which she feared would bring trouble for Anwar Ibrahim and PKR.
