Budapest Airport's summer schedule includes 13.8m seats, 200 routes

Trade Arabia03-04-2025

Budapest Airport, part of the VINCI Airports network, is set to achieve unprecedented growth in its summer 2025 schedule, offering the largest-ever seat and flight schedule in its history. With robust expansion, the Hungarian gateway will connect passengers to more destinations than ever before, reinforcing its status as a key European airport.
The airport's record-breaking summer schedule will see Budapest offer 13.8 million seats, a 9.8% increase vs summer 2024, connecting 136 cities with over 71,000 flights.
Network growth and new routes
For summer 2025, Budapest Airport will introduce 11 new routes, welcoming three new airlines:
• SAS Scandinavian Airlines: four times weekly flights to Copenhagen (new airline)
• Jazeera Airways: twice-weekly flights to Kuwait City, Kuwait (new airline)
• SCAT: twice-weekly flights to Shymkent, Kazakhstan (new airline)
• Wizz Air: twice-weekly flights to Girona, Spain, Venice, Wroclaw, and Bilbao, plus three times weekly flights to Gdansk and Vilnius.
• Ryanair: twice-weekly flights to Katowice and Castellon, Spain
Focusing on a diversified network
Looking at a regional-level, BUD will have the most scheduled seats with the Western European region, growing by 960,000 seats vs summer 2024 to over 11 million seats. In addition, capacity to/from the Middle-East will exceed 1 million seats, mainly thanks to enhanced capacity between Israel and Hungary
Existing airlines are also ramping up their operations from Hungary's capital city. Lufthansa is adding over 70,000 seats, introducing a fifth daily flight to Frankfurt and increasing to five daily flights to Munich on four out of seven days. Eurowings will operate double daily flights in the summer peak to Stuttgart, adding in total over 16,000 extra seats. Aer Lingus and Aegean Airlines will each increase their summer frequencies to five weekly flights each, enhancing onward connectivity to the US and Greek islands, respectively. KLM is boosting capacity with a fifth daily flight on each day to Amsterdam, providing 45,000 extra seats compared to summer 2024. Additionally, capacity to Israel will increase by 220,000 seats, reaching a total of 590,000. As a result, in summer 2025 BUD will have the most seats to/from Israel among airports in the CEE region.
Meanwhile, traffic between Hungary and China is set to grow further, with a total of 550,000 seats available in 2025, representing an additional 100,000 seats compared to 2024. As Budapest now ranks among the Top 10 Continental European destinations, the continuous rise in demand for air travel between the two nations reflects strong economic ties and increased tourism interest.
As easyJet operates Paris and Lyon flights in the summer period, next to flight from Geneva, Basel and London-Gatwick, the total seat capacity reaches over 310,000 seats, a 15% increase from summer 2024. Already looking ahead to winter 25/26, easyJet has announced year-round, twice-weekly flights to Bordeaux and Nantes as the airline continues to expand its route network from Budapest. With these two new routes, easyJet will increase its number of routes from Budapest from three in 2023 to seven in 2025.
In addition, Jet2.com will operate twice weekly seasonal routes to Newcastle and East-Midlands. As a result of the expansion, by end of 2025 Jet2.com will operate six routes.
'This record-breaking schedule demonstrates our commitment to strengthening Budapest Airport's connectivity, diversify our airline portfolio and enhancing travel options for our passengers,' said Máté Ritter, Head of Airline Development, Budapest Airport. 'With a strong mix of new routes, increased frequencies, and strategic market developments, the summer marks another step forward in commitment to diversify our network.'

NATO chief urges 400% rise in alliance's air defence

NATO head Mark Rutte yesterday urged a 'quantum leap' in defence capabilities including a '400-percent increase' in air and missile defence to shield the alliance against Russia. His comments came as he pushes for NATO members to commit to ramping up defence spending at a key summit of the western military alliance later this month. 'We see in Ukraine how Russia delivers terror from above, so we will strengthen the shield that protects our skies,' the NATO secretary general said in a speech to the Chatham House think-tank in London. To maintain credible deterrence and defence, NATO needs 'a 400-percent increase in air and missile defence', the former Dutch prime minister added. 'The fact is, we need a quantum leap in our collective defence,' he said. Rutte is urging NATO members to commit to 3.5 percent of GDP on direct military spending by 2032, and an additional 1.5 percent on broader security-related expenditure. The proposal is a compromise deal designed to satisfy US President Donald Trump, who has demanded that allies each spend five percent of economic output on defence, up from a current commitment of two percent. Rutte said he 'expects' leaders to agree to the proposal at the summit of the 32-country alliance on June 24-25 in The Hague. 'It will be a NATO-wide commitment and a defining moment for the alliance,' he said in his speech. Russia condemned Rutte's comments before he took to the stage, denouncing NATO as 'an instrument of aggression'. NATO 'is demonstrating itself as an instrument of aggression and confrontation', Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters in Moscow. Rutte's speech came after he met UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer on Monday, their second Downing Street talks since the Labour leader came into power in July 2024. Starmer's government this year pledged to increase defence spending to 2.5 percent of GDP by 2027, but has not yet set a firm timeline for further hikes. On Monday, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced Canada would hit two percent this year. US Secretary of Defence Pete Hegseth said last week the allies were close to an agreement on the split five-percent target. 'That combination constitutes a real commitment, and we think every country can step up,' he said on Thursday. 'Fairer, more lethal alliance' NATO members have been scrambling to bolster their defence capabilities since Russia launched its invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. Trump's return to the White House in January, and question marks over his commitment to European security, has added urgency. 'Danger will not disappear even when the war in Ukraine ends,' Rutte said at Chatham House. 'We must have more forces and capabilities to implement our defence plans in full.' He added that Russia currently produces the same amount of ammunition in three months as 'the whole of NATO produces in a year'. 'Our militaries also need thousands more armoured vehicles and tanks, millions more artillery shells,' Rutte added. Britain announced plans last week to build up to 12 nuclear-powered attack submarines and six munitions factories to rearm the country in response to what it said were threats from Russia. Rutte also warned that China is 'modernizing and expanding its military at breakneck speed'. 'NATO has to become a stronger, fairer and more lethal alliance,' he added. And he warned that if countries cannot commit to 5.0 percent for defence spending 'you could still have the National Health Service, or in other countries, their health systems, the pension system, etc, but you better learn to speak Russian. I mean, that's the consequence'.

Tourism spending in the Middle East is projected to reach $350bln by 2030, according to a new travel industry report

A new report compiled by Tourism Economics on behalf of Arabian Travel Market (ATM) predicts that by 2030, total tourism spend in the Middle East will be 50% higher than in 2024, generating expenditure of nearly US$350 billion. The ATM Travel Trends Report 2025 reveals insights into the trends and transformations redefining the travel sector in the Middle East and worldwide, including the surge of business travel, the growth of the luxury segment, and the boom in regional sports tourism. The report highlights exceptional growth in Middle East travel spending, projected to exceed 2019 levels by 54% this year and anticipates an annual growth rate of over 7% from 2025 to 2030. Danielle Curtis, Exhibition Director ME, Arabian Travel Market, said: 'The report's findings confirm that travel growth in the Middle East is incredibly strong, with annual growth averaging more than 7% through 2030. Bold national visions, game-changing developments, and enhanced connectivity are some of the key factors driving this momentum.' Underscoring the Middle East's strong position in global tourism, inbound travel from outside the region is set to grow by 13% annually up to 2030 and outbound business travel forecast to surge at 9% per year. European source markets make up 50% of all leisure travel to the Middle East, with India and the United Kingdom the top two inbound international leisure source markets. China is also a critical market, ranking third by value with leisure spend expected to increase by 130% by 2030. Furthermore, tourism nights by visitors from Asia Pacific and Africa, are expected to increase by over 100% between now and 2030. For outbound travel, Saudi Arabia and Egypt dominate regional flows, while Thailand and the United Kingdom lead as preferred long-haul destinations. The four largest airlines in the region – Emirates, Etihad Airways, Qatar Airways and Saudia – have placed nearly 780 aircraft orders with Boeing and Airbus, representing major expansions to their existing fleets. This significant investment underscores the region's strategic focus on becoming a global aviation hub and meeting rising passenger demand over the coming decade. The Middle East's rise as a global hub for business events is another key highlight of the report, which states that spending on Middle East business travel will grow 1.5 times faster than the global average through to 2030. The region's strategic location at the centre of Asia, Africa, and Europe supports business and leisure travel, with the latter on a particularly strong trajectory for growth. The sector plays a vital role in developing the region's reputation for hosting major events. It is expected to experience the second-fastest rate of business travel growth among all global regions, underscoring the increased potential for combining business and leisure travel, or 'bleisure'. Curtis commented: 'At ATM 2025, we recognised the industry's hunger for innovation in travel technology as well as the rising demand for business travel across the region. In response, we launched two dynamic new zones, IBTM@ATM and the Innovation Zone, designed to empower our growing audience to shape the future of travel with the speed and scale our exciting industry demands.' The region is also witnessing unprecedented growth in luxury and lifestyle tourism, attracting a new generation of high-net-worth travellers, drawn to exceptional Middle East hospitality, curated experiences and premium cultural events. According to the report global spending on luxury leisure hospitality is expected to continue growing briskly reaching over US$390 billion by 2028. 'Travellers drawn to the Middle East tend to spend more on travel overall, nearly 60% habitually spending on luxury experiences while travelling compared to under 40% among travellers who favour other destinations,' added Curtis. Of the more than 170 luxury hotel properties in the Middle East, nearly 100 are situated Abu Dhabi and Dubai, with 22 currently in development. With several luxury properties in the pipeline among Saudi Arabia's Giga projects, the region will continue to serve as a preferred destination for luxury and leisure travellers. Following in the footsteps of the Qatar 2022 World Cup and Dubai Expo 2020, the Middle East region has a proven track record for successfully hosting high-profile entertainment and sports events. According to the ATM Travel Trends report, the strong appetite for sports tourism in the region will lead to a potential growth rate of 63% in the coming years, with the 2034 FIFA World Cup in Saudi Arabia set to continue this momentum. According to the report, golf, motorsports, football, cycling, and esports are all benefiting from heightened visibility and investment in the region. This surge in sporting and entertainment events is significantly boosting the travel industry, driving increased demand for hotel stays, flights, and related services, creating a ripple effect that supports broader tourism growth. ATM is the leading international travel and tourism event held annually in Dubai. It plays a vital role in shaping the future of global travel. Held at the Dubai World Trade Centre, the 2025 edition welcomed over 55,000 industry professionals from 166 countries, achieving year-on-year growth of 16%. The next edition will take place from 4-7 May 2026. To view the report, please click here.

Postecoglou sacked by Spurs despite ending trophy drought

Ange Postecoglou was sacked as Tottenham manager yesterday, just 16 days after the Australian ended the club's 17-year trophy drought by winning the Europa League. Postecoglou led Tottenham to a 1-0 victory over Manchester United in Bilbao to clinch the north Londoners' first European prize in 41 years and secure a place in next season's Champions League. But the Australian paid the price for Tottenham's worst domestic season since they were relegated from the top flight in 1976-77. 'Following a review of performances and after significant reflection, the Club can announce that Ange Postecoglou has been relieved of his duties,' a statement on Tottenham's official X account said. Exactly two years after he was hired from Celtic, Postecoglou's eventful spell in north London was brought to a end by chairman Daniel Levy. Tottenham lost 22 of their 38 Premier League games to finish 17th in the table, above only relegated trio Leicester, Ipswich and Southampton. 'The Board has unanimously concluded that it is in the best interests of the club for a change to take place,' the statement said. 'Whilst winning the Europa League this season ranks as one of the club's greatest moments, we cannot base our decision on emotions aligned to this triumph.'
