Wayne Rooney linked with shock job at football minnows Macclesfield six months after Plymouth disaster which saw England legend living 260 MILES away from wife Coleen
Wayne Rooney is reportedly being lined up for a shock move to non-league minnows Macclesfield just six months after being given the boot by Plymouth Argyle.
The Manchester United and England legend has been working as a pundit for Amazon Prime since he was axed on New Year's Eve but could be set to replace Robbie Savage as Macclesfield head coach.
The former midfielder has been in charge of the Silkmen since last year, winning 40 of his 51 games in charge, and said it would need a 'really special job' to tempt him away.
But he has been heavily linked with the vacant Forest Green Rovers job after Steve Cotteril's sacking.
Rooney is now in line to take over Savage's role were he to depart, according to The Sun.
The ex-United and Everton star endured a miserable seven-month stint at Home Park, winning just five of his 25 games and leaving them languishing at the bottom of the Championship table.
Plymouth's form greatly improved under Miron Muslic but the Pilgrims were condemned to relegation to League One.
It came after another dismal 83-day spell in charge of Birmingham that brought nine defeats in 15 games.
His first foray in management came at D.C. United, before he took charge of Derby in 2020.
A move to Macclesfield would allow the 39-year-old to remain at his Cheshire home alongside wife Coleen.
He had to grow accustomed to his wife's absence during his spell at Plymouth, with his family living 260 miles away in Cheshire, while he stayed in a rented seaside flat.
England's second highest goalscorer ever was often found frequenting local bars on his evenings off, with the stress of managing his side appearing to be overwhelming.
Rooney was once separated from his wife by 10,508 miles, as she took part in I'm A Celebrity
While at Plymouth, Rooney was at one point separated from his wife by 10,508 miles, with Coleen taking part in last year's I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here! in Australia.
Meanwhile, Macclesfield, who were reformed in 2020 following their liquidation, will compete in the National League North, the sixth tier, next season.
They secured promotion from the Northern Premier League last season after accumulating 109 points, 26 more than their nearest title rivals.

Will Blades live long and prosper?
It's Sheffield United, Jim, but not as we know red and white half of the Steel City is set for a fascinating 43 days between now and kick-off in the new Championship the Blades face Bristol City at Bramall Lane on 9 August, a new chapter – heralded by the club's American owners – will begin in now the dust is beginning to settle on a seismic change for which tremors will undoubtedly be felt for weeks, months and years to been a busy and dramatic six months since COH Sports acquired Sheffield United. Chris Wilder was quickly given a new three-and-a-half-year contract. United claimed a club record 92 points but missed out on automatic promotion in the final few games. They then lost the Championship play-off final having led with 15 minutes to go before Wilder eventually departed by mutual consent, being replaced by Spaniard Ruben decision has split the Blades fanbase, with social media exposing extreme opinions on both sides of the argument for and against fan and former player Wilder will always be a legendary figure at Bramall Lane. He achieved this status in his first spell when he took the club from League One obscurity to ninth in the Premier League, but he deserves more credit than he has received for his second spell, including last summer's rebuild in the wake of relegation from the top-flight, with a significant turnaround of players, and the protracted takeover which continued until late Wembley in May he stood on the brink of achieving something no other manager in the club's history had achieved: three promotions. It will always sting that he came so close for Wilder, his players and the club's a significant number of Blades fans took issue with performances last season and the club's style of play, while questioning the success of recruitment in January and the near £450,000 in fines paid over player and staff motivated the decision to act, the Blades board has acted, and in doing so, they have thrown their full weight behind former Hull City and Reading boss claim that he "can employ innovative recruitment and analytic strategies" is key - relating to the owners' eagerness to use data and artificial intelligence to "recruit the best and brightest talent", which is central to the intrigue about how the Blades squad will take shape under Selles, who says he will have the final say on many existing players will be able to deliver the intensity that the Spaniard demands? Will some Wilder regulars find themselves sidelined? Will data-driven arrivals be in the majority or minority, as opposed to "seen it, done it" Championship players?United's new board is seeking "sustainable success" and says "the road ahead may require patience", but having come so close to a Premier League return last season, patience may be in short supply if the Blades aren't in the mix for automatic promotion from an early a brave new enterprise at Bramall Lane, with Selles tasked to boldly go and establish the Blades as a regular top-flight club.

England-Nigeria decision coming soon
Chelsea defender Tosin Adarabioyo recognises he needs to decide "sooner or later" whether his international future lies with England or 27-year-old has yet to receive an international call-up for either his nation of birth, England, or parentage, Nigeria with the World Cup taking place in the United States in about his hopes for playing international football, Adarabioyo said: "The World Cup means it is a decision I need to take sooner rather than later. It is a conversation we will have and we will see how it goes."The centre-back, born in Manchester, has been open to playing for England, representing the country from under-16s to under-19s, and being on Gareth Southgate's long list while playing at Fulham. However, he has yet to receive a formal terms of Nigeria, Adarabioyo has previously denied turning down any call-ups in the past. Sources say there was caution in making any decisions after his recent move to Chelsea, with the defender publicly stating he wanted to focus on club football this season. Adarabioyo is proud to have familial ties with Nigeria and last year his camp received informal contact from them. Now, with stability at Chelsea after playing 39 games this season, Adarabioyo is approaching decision time should a call-up several sources at Chelsea have praised the defender's off-field influence, especially at the Club World Cup where players are away from their families and with a lot of free time on their hands. They highlighted his close relationship with star player Cole Palmer and nickname 'Uncle' as evidence of his influence as one of a number of leaders in the squad. "I settled very quickly when I came and took on that leadership role to try and help the boys whenever I can," Adarabioyo added. "At Fulham, I was actually one of the youngest and now to come here and be one of the eldest, it's quite funny. But wherever I've been I've always been one of the leaders in the team."One example of Adarabioyo's leadership was encouraging Palmer to say more in a man-of-the-match interview after the Conference League final, with the forward in turn filmed applauding his friend after winning 'Superior Player of the Match' in a viral video after the 3-0 win over ES Tunis on Tuesday night. "No, I'm not a mentor (for Palmer), but I was looking after him a little bit," he added. "He's a top, top player who doesn't need advice from me to know what he has to do but I'm there whenever he needs me. "I banter him sometimes and tells he's a little superstar. He handles it very well."
