NWS hires won't make up for Trump cuts, meteorologists say
New hiring efforts at the National Weather Service won't be enough to overcome staffing shortages and potential risks to human lives this summer, meteorologists warned Wednesday at a panel hosted by Democratic Washington Sen. Maria Cantwell. NOAA will hire around 125 new employees at the NWS, the agency said in an announcement first reported Monday by CNN. But nearly 600 employees have departed the NWS over the last few months, after the Trump administration fired probationary federal employees and offered buyouts and early retirements. That means the new hires will account for less than 25 percent of the total losses. Advertisement 'A quarter of the staff are not going to do the job when, let's just say, both hurricane and fire risks are increasing,' Cantwell said during Wednesday's panel. '[The Trump administration's] approach in response to this has been a flimsy Band-Aid over a very massive cut.'

White Sox fall 5-4 after tie-breaking RBI by Tigers in the 8th
Colt Keith hit a tiebreaking RBI double in the eighth inning to help the major league-leading Detroit Tigers beat the lowly Chicago White Sox 5-4 on a rainy Wednesday night. The Tigers regrouped after blowing a four-run lead and bounced back from an 8-1 pounding the previous day. Wenceel Pérez was ruled safe at second with a leadoff double to center against Brandon Eisert (2-1) in the eighth after a successful replay challenge by Detroit. He scored with one out on Colt Keith's bloop double down the left field line that landed just fair beyond a sliding left fielder, Andrew Benintendi's glove, making it 5-4. Will Vest (5-0) pitched two scoreless innings, and Tommy Kahnle worked the ninth for his eighth save in 11 chances. The Tigers tagged White Sox starter Jared Shuster for four runs in the first after a 95-minute delay. Riley Greene drove in two with a single and scored in the inning. Chicago's Mike Tauchman hit an RBI double and scored in the third. Benintendi doubled leading off the fourth and came around when Josh Rojas chased Tigers starter Sawyer Gipson-Long with a sacrifice fly. Benintendi tied it at 4 in the fifth with a bases-loaded sac fly against Tyler Holton. Gipson-Long lasted 3 2/3 innings in his first start in nearly two years, allowing three runs and five hits. The 27-year-old right-hander missed last season with elbow and hip injuries that required surgery. Shuster, the opener in a bullpen game, gave up four runs and five hits in one inning. Key moment Both teams loaded the bases in the fifth. The Tigers came away empty-handed when Steven Wilson struck out Colt Keith. After Benintendi tied it in the bottom half, pinch hitter Austin Slater flied to center, ending the inning. Key stat The Tigers have won 20 of 25 against Chicago. The alert will be in effect from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. for the city, as well as Long Island, the Hudson Valley and Connecticut. Much of the region was also under an air quality alert Wednesday, but Long Island was not included. Now, parts of New Jersey that were included Wednesday have been removed. CBS News New York Expect another day of hazy skies as smoke and haze continue to funnel in from fires burning in Canada's prairie provinces. The smoke and haze, along with rising humidity levels, will contribute to diminished air quality levels today. The good news is that the haze will gradually dissipate over the next few days, leading to improving air quality levels. CBS News New York The hottest day of 2025, so far, is likely to occur today, with highs reaching the upper 80s to low 90s. As the humidity creeps up, a stray shower or storm may develop to the north and west of the city in the afternoon. Air Quality Index (AQI) today CBS News New York An air quality alert is issued when the Air Quality Index exceeds 100. Today, it's expected to be around 108, slightly higher than Wednesday. The AQI measures air pollution and the associated health risks. The system has six ratings: Good (green): 0 to 50 Moderate (yellow): 51 to 100 Unhealthy for sensitive groups (orange): 101 to 150 Unhealthy (red): 151 to 200 Very unhealthy (purple): 201 to 300 Hazardous (marron): 301 and higher Sensitive groups include people with heart or lung disease, older adults, children and pregnant women. What makes the air quality so bad CBS News New York New York City's air quality often suffers in the summer, especially during heat waves, due to higher temperatures and humidity levels. Stagnant air traps pollutants from cars and factories, creating high levels of fine particulates that react to sunlight and lead to respiratory issues. Sometimes, though, air quality alerts have nothing to do with pollution. In June 2023, smoke from that season's Canadian wildfires blew directly into New York City, leading to an extremely hazardous AQI of 484 -- not only the highest ever recorded in the city, but the worst air quality in the entire world on that date. Tracking storms to end the week CBS News New York For tonight, clouds thicken, and it will be warm and muggy, with lows in the mid 60s to low 70s. As for Friday, another warm and humid day is expected, but not as hot as today. Morning sunshine will give way to afternoon showers and thunderstorms. The severe threat is low, though.
