Daughter's tribute to dad found in bin

Perth Nowa day ago

The daughter of a man whose body was found in an industrial-sized bin has taken to social media to remember her 'best friend' as police continue to piece together the fateful night.
Luke Jon Telega, 45, was found by a garbage contractor behind a Salvation Army store on Percy Street, Hobart about 9am on Monday.
He was last seen by his children on Saturday night.
'Rest easy dad,' Harmony Telega shared in her heartbreaking tribute in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

'You were the best father I could've ever asked for, my best friend.
'You helped me when I needed it with no questions asked you were always happy to spend time with me for no reason.
'I will for ever (sic) be grateful for you I love you so so much.
'I will forever pick you to be my father in every life time (sic). Until we meet again dad.'
It comes as Tasmanian police continue to investigate whether Mr Telega was met with foul play or misadventure in the hours between his last sighting and his body being found.
New CCTV footage has been released in hopes of identifying two people police believe may have information. Mr Telega's daughter described him as her 'best friend'. Authorities would like to speak to a woman captured standing at a shopfront on Percy Street about 7.50pm on Sunday who may have spoken to someone on the street.
She was seen driving what is believed to be a light-coloured Toyota Prado.
A second woman, also seen on Percy Street at 8.05pm, was driving a red SUV.
It is understood the bin the body was found in was frequented by people sleeping rough.
It is not known whether Mr Telega, who was homeless, had been sleeping in it.
Now his family are faced with finding the money to lay him to rest, with Harmony's friend Lily Hurst setting up a GoFundMe in support of the family. 'I'm trying to raise funds for my friend harmony telega as her father Luke telega past away suddenly and the family doesn't have the funds to be able to give Luke a funeral,' she wrote.
'Harmony and her family would love to give Luke the send of (sic) as he deserves but as funds are tight that isn't an option, if there is anyone that could please help with this tragic stressful time it would be very much appreciated every little bit will help so much.'

A family is "beyond worried" after their young daughter and her boyfriend failed to board a scheduled flight home from Tasmania to Brisbane two days ago and have not been heard from since. Brisbane couple Leannedra Kang and Takahiro Toya both aged in their 20s, were travelling around Tasmania in a rental white Toyota Corolla with the registration L67GW, before they vanished. The pair was scheduled to fly home on Wednesday from Launceston to Brisbane, but they did not board their flight or return the rental vehicle. Ms Kang's sister Alex Andra posted on social media on Thursday pleading with the public for information on the couple's location. Ms Andra said her sister's last known location was either North Hobart or Goshen. "My 25 year old sister and her boyfriend has been missing for 48 hours. We are currently lodging a police report," she wrote on Facebook. "Her name is Leannedra Kang. "Her last know location was either North Hobart or Goshen. "Please let me know if anyone has been in contact with her or seen her. "My family is beyond worried." Update after husband shot wife

A Sydney man who shot his wife and severed her spine, causing 'catastrophic injuries', will spend at least four years behind bars. Kamal El Jamal, 35, fired several shots from an illegal firearm into the ceiling of his Condell Park garage, in Sydney's southwest, as his wife, Georgina Vlahos, slept in her bed directly above on January, 12, 2023. Kamal Eljamal has been sentenced. NewsWire / Max Mason-Hubers Credit: News Corp Australia El Jamal, pleaded guilty in Downing Centre District Court in February to recklessly causing actual bodily harm and using a pistol not authorised to do so. Appearing in court for sentencing on Friday, El Jamal cried as Judge Sean Grant sentenced him to seven years in prison, with a non-parole period of four years and three months. Judge Grant said the shooting was a 'very grave example' of this type of offending, which involved 'a grave risk of death to another person'. 'The victim has no feeling below her spine … she will never walk again,' he told the court. The prosecution submitted that the victim suffered 'catastrophic injuries' and would undoubtedly require 'significance assistance in various aspects of everyday life'. However, Ms Vlahos had previously written to the court requesting that El Jamal be her caregiver and saying she had 'forgiven' him. Georgina Vlahos was told she would never walk again. Facebook Credit: Supplied Details of the horrific injuries he inflicted upon his then partner were previously read out in court. It wasn't until about 30 minutes after the bullet travelled through the garage ceiling, the floorboards of the main bedroom and the mattress of the bed and hit Ms Vlahos that El Jamal called out to a neighbour for help. The shots severed Ms Vlahos's spine and caused significant damage to her liver and spleen. She suffered a devastating spinal cord injury and was told she would never walk again. At the time of the shooting, El Jamal was 'significantly affected by drugs' and 'did not intend to harm his partner or anyone else', his Legal Aid barrister Ertunc Ozen previously told the court. Court documents say Ms Vlahos told paramedics that she 'didn't remember anything' upon her arrival at Bankstown Hospital, and she 'could not feel her legs'. CCTV footage from the day of the incident shows El Jamal driving up to the ambulance bay in a Mercedes-Benz before stopping and getting out of the vehicle. He then approached paramedics and yelled 'help her, you've got to come and help her', before telling them he 'just found her like this'. While paramedics were tending to Ms Vlahos, El Jamal fled the scene on foot. The reasoning for firing the shot is not known, the court was told on Friday, and the pistol was never recovered. 'It is disturbing that the firearm has not been recovered and that it remains in the community,' Judge Grant told the court. El Jamal's bail was refused during a hearing in February and he was remanded in custody. He will be eligible for parole in April 2028.

Fatal punch thrown in fear: court

A former Gold Coast Titans player accused of fatally striking a man during a street confrontation has taken the stand in his own defence, telling a Brisbane jury he acted out of fear in a chaotic and escalating situation. Oshae Jackson Tuiasau, 29, took to the witness box on Friday in the Supreme Court, where he pleaded not guilty to unlawfully striking Toro George, 39, who died in hospital eight days after collapsing on a Surfers Paradise street in the early hours of December 19, 2021. Mr Tuiasau, a married father who now works alongside his wife running children's events, told the court that he arrived at Havana RnB Nightclub just before midnight with two friends and met several people inside, including Mr George. He recalled that Mr George questioned their presence in the VIP area, allegedly asking: 'Who the f--k are these people?' Mr Tuiasau admitted he had consumed 15 to 20 Coronas that night but said he was not angry or looking for trouble. NewsWire/Tertius Pickard Credit: News Corp Australia The court was previously told there had been a night of escalating tensions stemming from a sexual assault allegation inside the nightclub. A young woman, known to Mr Tuiasau, was celebrating her 19th birthday and testified that Mr George touched her inappropriately on the dance floor, prompting her brother to confront him and sparking a series of heated altercations captured on CCTV inside and outside the nightclub. Mr Tuiasau said he became aware of a commotion inside the nightclub involving Mr George but claimed he did not intervene when someone from his group told him that 'Toro had touched (a woman's) vagina'. 'We went somewhere else,' he said of his decision to avoid the confrontation. Mr Tuiasau said he later left the venue with two friends to go to a nearby hotel. Outside the club, police briefly separated both groups and escorted Mr George and others before they ran into Mr Tuiasau and others at the traffic lights. Mr Tuiasau said Mr George apologised to him. 'I'm sorry bro,' Mr George reportedly said. 'It's all good mate,' Mr Tuiasau replied. 'I accepted his apology,' Mr Tuiasau told the court. But tensions soon escalated again as the group walked down the street. Fatal punch victim Toro George. Facebook Credit: News Corp Australia Mr Tuiasau and other witnesses told the jury that Mr George's demeanour changed dramatically; he became agitated, loud and aggressive, yelling in both English and Cook Island Maori that he wanted to go back and get his brothers. Mr Tuiasau said he heard Mr George swearing and shouting about getting his 'f--king brothers'. During the short walk, Mr Tuiasau admitted saying to Mr George, 'Don't touch my sister,' and, 'Don't f--king come near me.' 'I felt like he was coming at me aggressively and he was going to hit me,' Mr Tuiasau said, adding that he was also worried for his friend Junior's safety. 'I was just trying to keep him away from me.' CCTV footage showed shoving between Mr George and other members of the group. Mr Tuiasau, who appeared uninvolved in the physical exchanges, was walking on the far side of the group. The footage showed Mr George leaning towards him before Mr Tuiasau suddenly struck him once in the face. Mr George fell backwards and hit his head on the pavement. He immediately lost consciousness. Mr Tuiasau said it all happened in a matter of 'seconds'. 'I didn't have time to think,' he said. Mr George's wife Arden George outside Brisbane Supreme Court. NewsWire/Tertius Pickard Credit: News Corp Australia Earlier in the trial, the jury was shown harrowing body-worn police footage of the moment officers found Mr George slumped and unconscious on a bench. They initially detected a pulse, but minutes later he went into cardiac arrest. An officer can be heard saying 'I think his pulse is gone … yep.' The officers quickly moved Mr George onto the ground, ripped open his shirt and began CPR. Some of the group admitted to initially lying to police by claiming Mr George had simply collapsed, offering what appeared to be vague or no explanation for their false statements. Mr Tuiasau's legal team argued the cardiac arrest and subsequent brain injury may have been unrelated to the punch. Forensic pathologist Melissa Thompson told the jury that it was her 'firm opinion' Mr George suffered cardiac arrest due to a concussive shock to the medulla oblongata, the brain stem, likely from striking his head on the ground. She described the punch itself as only 'mild to moderate' in force. Dr Thompson dismissed the possibility of anaphylaxis, noting none of Mr George's friends or treating clinicians reported symptoms consistent with that diagnosis but conceded it couldn't be entirely ruled out, nor could a coincidental cardiac arrest given his pre-existing health issues, including heart disease, cocaine use, and a blood-alcohol reading of 0.246 per cent. The defence's expert, Professor Johan Duflou, told the court that anaphylaxis from cocaine was possible, though unlikely. He also questioned Dr Thompson's theory, pointing out that Mr George's medulla did not display the kind of damage typically expected from a concussive shock. Mr Tuiasau's testimony is set to continue.
