Pueblo couple killed in apparent murder-suicide identified; police say husband shot wife
Two people found dead in their home following an apparent murder-suicide in Pueblo on March 16 have been identified as a husband and wife.
In response to a Colorado Open Records Act request from the Chieftain, the Pueblo County Coroner's Office identified the people killed as Sherri and Gerald Holmes.
Sherri Holmes died as a result of gunshot wounds and Gerald Holmes died from a single gunshot wound, according to the coroner's office.
Pueblo Police Department spokesperson Bianca Hicks told the Chieftain March 24 that after evaluating evidence, including the placement of gunshot wounds and witness statements, police concluded Gerald Holmes shot and killed Sherri Holmes and then died by suicide.
Police were called to the 2200 block of Inspiration Lane just before 8:30 a.m. March 16 on a report of shots fired and set up a perimeter around the home, according to a Pueblo PD news release.
The Pueblo SWAT team arrived and entered the home to find Sherri and Gerald Holmes dead. Detectives processed the scene after executing a search warrant and police announced that the deaths would be investigated as a murder-suicide.
Pueblo PD's investigation has since concluded, Hicks confirmed to the Chieftain.
Sherri Holmes is Pueblo's first homicide victim of 2025. A total of 20 homicides were recorded in the city of Pueblo in 2024.

15-year-old arrested in deadly Pueblo drive-by shooting
(PUEBLO, Colo.) — A 15-year-old boy and 24-year-old woman have been arrested in connection to the drive-by shooting of 19-year-old Michael Suazo in April. According to the Pueblo Police Department (PPD), officers originally responded on April 6 to the area of Highway 50 and Hudson Avenue on a report of a shooting. When they arrived, officers found Suazo suffering from apparent gunshot wounds in a car near Hwy 50. He was pronounced dead on scene, and two others in the car were evaluated for minor injuries, PPD said. PREVIOUS COVERAGE: 19-year-old identified in fatal Pueblo drive-by shooting PPD said the shooting was believed to have occurred in the intersection of N. Hudson Avenue and Hwy 50, with many witnesses present at the time. A manhunt was launched following the shooting, with officers looking for a red 2015 Ford Escape. PPD said investigators developed enough evidence to issue arrest warrants for a 15-year-old suspect as well as 24-year-old Caitlyn Gonzales. Shortly before 5 p.m. on May 20, both suspects were located by the Colorado Violent Offender Task Force. When officers tried to pull them over, PPD said they fled north on I-25 toward the City of Fountain. The Fountain Police Department was able to disable the car, and both suspects were taken into custody and transported back to Pueblo. The teen was taken to Pueblo Youth Corrections, where he was booked on warrants for first-degree murder after deliberation and violating juvenile parole. Gonzales was booked into the Pueblo County Detention Center on felony charges of accessory to a crime and tampering with physical evidence, as well as a misdemeanor for contributing to the delinquency of a minor. GJPD investigating Orchard Mesa Middle School fight that went viral on social media
MESA COUNTY, Colo. (KREX) – A video of a middle school fight that recently went viral on Facebook is being investigated by the Grand Junction Police Department. GJPD said it received a report on Tuesday regarding an assault between two students on Monday at Orchard Mesa Middle School. One of the minors sustained minor injuries. GJPD is currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident. Mesa Valley School District 51 is also launching an investigation per district and board policy. The fight sparked talk on social media, including claims that school staff witnessed the fight and did nothing to intervene. D51 pushed back on this, saying that it was 'misinformation.' D51 said in a statement that school staff wasn't aware of the fight at the time. 'Contrary to claims, staff members were not in the immediate vicinity or ignoring the situation. School personnel addressed the incident immediately as soon as they became aware. Student safety is always our top priority, and we take these situations seriously. Our Director of Safety & Security was made aware of the incident and immediately forwarded video of the incident to GJPD,' the school district said. D51 also said posting these rumors on social media can be harmful. 'We ask our community to avoid spreading misinformation, as it only fuels fear and confusion. As we strive to create safe, supportive environments where every student can thrive, we encourage our D51 community to speak up and report anything that may pose a risk to themselves or others,' the district said. The individuals in this case will not have their identities released following the Colorado Open Records Act. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
