Toddler & 87-year-old factory owner among 8 charred to death in a fire at Solapur towel-making unit
Kolhapur: Eight people, including a one-and-a-half-year-old child, lost their lives in a major fire that engulfed a factory in the Akkalkot Road MIDC during the early hours of Sunday.
The victims included four family members of the factory owner and four members of a worker's family who lived on the premises.
The fire broke out between 3.30am and 4am, with initial investigations pointing to an electrical short circuit. The Solapur Municipal Corporation's fire brigade responded promptly, with initial support from a nearby NTPC plant fire tender. All other fire tenders from the Solapur Municipal Corporation also reached the spot.
The rescue operation faced challenges as the entrance to the Central Textile Company was blocked by a religious structure that had been erected by the factory owner's family. The firefighters had to access the building via ladder and create an alternative entry by breaking a 20ft back wall. Despite rescuing three people initially, dense smoke and flames prevented further immediate rescues.
The operation resulted in injuries to three firefighters, including chief fire officer Rakesh Salunkhe.

The firemen sustained burns to their palms and faces despite wearing specialised protective gear. Despite their injuries, the firemen persisted with the rescue efforts until completion.
Around 8am, three bodies were retrieved — Mehtab Bagwan (51), Hina Bagwan (35), and Salman Bagwan (18). Later, at 3pm, rescuers recovered the bodies of Usman Mansuri (87), Anas Mansuri (24), Shika Mansuri (24), Yusuf Mansuri (1.5), and Ayesha Bagwan (45).
The factory, established by Usman Mansuri, manufactured bath and hand towels. While the deceased with the Mansuri surname belong to the owner's family, those named Bagwan belong to the worker's family.
According to Sadashiv Paddune, sub-divisional officer of Solapur collector's office, the factory occupied 10-12 gunthas (one gunta is 1,000 sqft) of land. Local residents reported hearing a loud noise, likely from the electrical fault. The fire raged for six to seven hours, with recovery operations lasting 10-12 hours. A distant relative identified the owner's family's remains, with no immediate family members surviving.
The fire caused extensive damage to raw materials and machinery, with losses estimated at Rs 1 crore. The premises included living quarters for both the owners and residential workers.

‘Despicable act': MEA condemns attack on Rabindranath Tagore's ancestral home in Bangladesh, says attempt to erase symbols of tolerance
NEW DELHI: The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Thursday strongly condemned the vandalisation of Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore 's ancestral home in Bangladesh, describing it as a 'despicable' and 'violent' act that disrespects the memory and inclusive values espoused by the poet. 'We strongly condemn the despicable act of vandalisation of Rabindranath Tagore's ancestral home in Bangladesh by a mob,' MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said in a statement. 'This violent act is a disgrace to the memory and inclusive values espoused by the Nobel Laureate.' The MEA further noted that such actions are part of 'broad, systematic attempts by extremists to erase symbols of tolerance,' reflecting a concerning trend. "We have urged interim government of Bangladesh to rein in perpetrators and take strict action them," he said. According to reports, the incident occurred at the Rabindra Kachharibari (also known as Rabindra Memorial Museum) in Shahzadpur, Sirajganj, on Wednesday. The Kachharibari is a historic mansion where Tagore lived and composed many of his works. The unrest reportedly began on June 8, when a visitor and his family had an argument with a museum employee over motorcycle parking fees. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Tired of High Power Bills? In reaction, locals staged a protest by forming a human chain on Tuesday. Subsequently, a mob stormed the premises, vandalised the museum's auditorium, and reportedly assaulted a senior director of the institution. Following the attack, Bangladesh's department of archaeology formed a three-member committee to investigate the incident. The committee has been instructed to submit its report within five working days. Md Habibur Rahman, custodian of the Kachharibari, told local media that the site has been temporarily closed to visitors due to "unavoidable circumstances." The Department of Archaeology is monitoring the situation closely. Located in the Rajshahi division, the Kachharibari is not just a historical site but a cultural symbol. It served as both the family estate and revenue office of the Tagore family. Rabindranath Tagore, who became the first non-European to win the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1913, created several of his iconic works while residing in this mansion. The vandalisation of the site has triggered widespread outrage and concern across both India and Bangladesh, with scholars, diplomats, and cultural institutions calling for the protection of shared heritage and historical legacies.

5 GTA 6 characters who are much more than just side characters
(Image via Rockstar Games) GTA 6 is shaping up to be Rockstar's most layered game yet, not just in terms of gameplay, but in how it writes its characters. From the sun-soaked streets of Vice City to the swampy underbelly of Grassrivers, the people you meet are more than just mission-givers. They have pasts, motives, and secrets. Here are five characters who are clearly hiding more than they show. 1. Cal Hampton At first glance, Cal seems like your typical tinfoil-hat-wearing loner. He drinks beer, listens to Coast Guard comms, and spouts off about birds flying in formation. But here's the thing: in GTA, paranoia often points to the truth. Cal isn't just comic relief; he's plugged into something bigger. If there's a government plot or criminal web behind the scenes, Cal might be the first one to see it coming. Why Raul Bautista is The Next Big GTA Legend? 2. Raul Bautista Raul has experience, charm, and a reputation. But beneath that cool exterior is someone who pushes every job to its breaking point. Rockstar calls him 'reckless,' and that's never a good sign. His obsession with bigger scores and bigger risks could blow up everything or reveal a deeper motive. Is he chasing adrenaline, or trying to run from something? Either way, Raul is dangerous. 3. Dre'Quan Priest Dre'Quan says he's just a music guy trying to make it big. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch vàng CFDs với sàn môi giới tin cậy IC Markets Tìm hiểu thêm Undo But look closer, he's connected to Boobie Ike, runs a label with viral stars, and has his hands in Vice City's club scene. That's a lot of influence for someone who 'used to deal just to make ends meet.' Dre'Quan might talk smooth, but he knows how the streets work. He's not just chasing fame; he's building something. Maybe something illegal. 4. Brian Heder Brian looks like an old Keys burnout: beach hair, flip-flops, third wife. But don't be fooled. He's a veteran drug runner with deep connections, and he's letting Jason live rent-free for a reason. He's not retired. He's just smart enough to work from the shadows. If things go sideways in the Keys, there's a good chance Brian was behind it. HIS NAME IS BOOBIE IKE? | GTA 6 5. Boobie Ike Boobie owns a strip club, a studio, and real estate, and he's got that friendly, 'just business' vibe. But remember: he says, 'drug money pays for it all.' That line isn't a throwaway; it's a warning. Boobie plays the long game. He smiles while he builds an empire, and people like that are rarely safe to trust. Don't mistake charm for innocence. In GTA 6, the real threat might not come from obvious enemies; it's the smiling allies, the smooth talkers, and the quiet veterans who will shape the story. These five are clearly more than they appear, and when things heat up in Leonida, they may be the ones holding the real power.

Indian-origin doctor Mona Ghosh sentenced to 10 years in prison in US for $2.4 million medical fraud
Dr Mona Ghosh sentenced to 10 years in prison in the US for medical fraud. Indian-American physician Dr Moa Ghosh (OB-GYN) who pleaded guilty last year to the fraud charges has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for the $2.4 million medical fraud that she committed through her medical office. The 52-year-old submitted fraudulent claims to insurers for procedures which were not medically necessary, including endometrial ablations and biopsies, ultrasounds, vaccinations, laboratory blood tests, and tests for sexually transmitted diseases. The practice went on from 2018 to 2022. Ghosh inflated the length and complexity of in-office and telemedicine visits and submitted claims using billing codes for which the visits did not qualify in order to seek higher reimbursement rates. Ghosh prepared false patient medical records to support the fraudulent reimbursement claims. 'When physicians submit fraudulent claims to federal health care programs, they divert taxpayer-funded resources away from those who truly need them,' said US Attorney Boutros. 'Dr Ghosh's fraud scheme was particularly egregious because she endangered the health of her patients by performing unnecessary medical procedures, including procedures that severely limited some patients' ability to have children in the future. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch vàng CFDs với sàn môi giới tin cậy IC Markets Tìm hiểu thêm Undo We applaud the victims' strength to come forward and confront this defendant. 'Dr Ghosh spent years traumatizing patients, lying to insurers, and stealing taxpayer money to feed her greed,' said FBI SAC DePodesta. 'The depraved conduct uncovered in this case represents an extreme betrayal of trust toward patients who were simply seeking care and integrity from their doctor. The FBI will continue to aggressively pursue and hold accountable any medical professional who seeks to harm patients for their personal enrichment. ' The convicted doctor has been ordered to pay approximately $1.5 million in restitution.
