Rays storm back with 6-run sixth inning, hang on to edge Mets 7-5

Danny Jansen hit a two-run homer to cap Tampa Bay's six-run sixth inning and the Rays came back to beat the Mets 7-5 on Friday night and snap New York's six-game winning streak. Mets starter Clay Holmes exited after five innings with a 5-1 lead, but Paul Blackburn was charged with four runs while giving up hits to four of the five batters he faced. Jake Mangum chased Blackburn with a two-run single and José Caballaro followed with a run-scoring groundout against Max Kranick (3-2) before Jansen hit a 389-foot homer to left on a 2-2 pitch. The Mets stranded seven runners over the final four innings. New York lost at Citi Field for the first time since May 28 and dropped to 27-8 at home. Eric Orze (1-0), who pitched briefly for the Mets last season, earned his first big league win by getting three outs after Rays starter Taj Bradley exited without recording an out in the fifth. Bradley gave up five runs — all unearned. Mason Montgomery, Garrett Cleavinger, Edwin Uceta and Pete Fairbanks — who earned his 13th save — combined for four scoreless innings for the Rays, who won despite committing a season-high three errors and issuing seven walks. Jonathan Aranda homered in the fourth for the Rays. Starling Marte had three hits and three RBIs for the Mets, while Tyrone Taylor hit into a run-scoring fielder's choice in the fourth. Juan Soto drew a bases-loaded walk in the fifth. Key moments Fairbanks wriggled out of a first-and-third jam in the ninth by getting Brett Baty to hit into a forceout and striking out Ronny Mauricio. Key stat The six runs allowed by the Mets in the fifth tied a season high set on May 18, when the Yankees scored six times in the eighth inning of an 8-2 win. Up next Mets RHP Tylor Megill (5-4, 3.76 ERA) faces Rays RHP Drew Rasmussen (5-4, 2.22 ERA) Saturday.

Washington Nationals vs Texas Rangers Game Thread

The Washington Nationals are facing off against an old divisional foe in Jacob Degrom. Degrom was one of the most dominant pitchers in baseball with the Mets. After a few injury plagued years, Degrom is back to dominating, even with his 37th birthday coming up this month. Luckily, the Nats got the win last night, which makes this matchup less pressure filled. The Nats are rolling out a bit of a new look lineup. Our top two of CJ Abrams and James Wood are familiar, but after that there is some mixing and matching. Luis Garcia Jr. is in the 3 hole, while Nathaniel Lowe is lower in the lineup than usual. Keibert Ruiz is back in the lineup, but he is hitting 8th. Alex Call will get the start even with a right hander on the mound. That means Jacob Young will be on the bench. The struggling Mitchell Parker will get the start. Advertisement The Rangers are searching for answers offensively right now, so skipper Bruce Bochy is switching things up. Corey Seager will get the day off, as he has been slumping lately. In a lineup with a lot of underperforming big names, Sam Haggerty will lead off for Texas. After a night off, starting catcher Jonah Heim will be behind the dish. As previously mentioned, Jacob Degrom will be on the mound. Game Info: Stadium: Nationals Park Time: 4:05 PM EST TV: MASN Radio: 106.7 The Fan and DC 87.7 With the pitching matchup, the odds are not in the Nats favor. However, it would be huge if they got a win and secured a series win. The offense needs to get going again, but it will be a tough task tonight. Comment down below and let's go Nats! Mets get ‘good news' on Kodai Senga's hamstring injury in sigh of relief

Try it free The Mets lost a game Friday but may have received a win on the health front. Kodai Senga was diagnosed with a Grade 1 hamstring strain (the least severe level among such injuries), manager Carlos Mendoza said following the Mets' 7-5 loss to the Rays at Citi Field. Senga strained the hamstring Thursday covering first base, and a day later was placed on the injured list. An MRI exam revealed the degree of the strain. 'Talking to the trainers, they feel like we got some good news here,' Mendoza said. 3 Kodai Senga hurt his hamstring during the Mets' win over the Nationals on Thursday. JASON SZENES/NY POST Mendoza said Senga will rest for about two weeks and then be evaluated for a potential ramp up. Last season, the Mets ace had several stops and goes in his return from a shoulder strain. He didn't pitch until July after opening the season on the injured list and then was sidelined, until the postseason, after only one start because of a calf strain. For now at least, Paul Blackburn — the team's de facto sixth starter — will shift from the bullpen to start Wednesday in Atlanta. On Friday, Blackburn had a rough relief appearance, allowing four hits and four earned runs in one-third of an inning. Blackburn said it 'sucks' to have lost Senga, given the manner in which the right-hander was pitching — he leads MLB with a 1.47 ERA in 13 starts — but Blackburn appreciates the opportunity to rejoin the rotation. 'That is kind of where my comfort zone lies,' Blackburn told The Post. 'It is what I have done my whole career. I have my whole routine set for that.' 3 Kodai Senga suffered a grade-1 strain. JASON SZENES/NY POST Blackburn returned from the injured list to start against the Dodgers on June 2, when he pitched five scoreless innings as part of a six-man rotation. Blackburn was placed in the bullpen after that outing. He recorded a four-inning save in Colorado last Sunday. 'Every team will go through [injuries], but I feel we are equipped to handle it,' Mendoza said. 'We have already got a guy like [Blackburn] on the active roster and we have got more guys that are close to joining the team.' But Frankie Montas, who allowed eight earned runs over 1 ²/₃ innings for Triple-A Syracuse on Friday, has struggled in his rehab outings, raising questions about how close he really might be to rejoining the rotation. 3 Paul Blackburn struggled on Friday night out of the bullpen. Charles Wenzelberg / New York Post Montas, according to president of baseball operations David Stearns, will need an additional appearance in the minors before a decision is reached on activating him. Montas, who is rehabbing a high-grade lat strain, has pitched poorly in all three of his starts for Syracuse. 'I think he is still feeling his way back,' Stearns said before Montas' latest clunker. 'This was a pretty significant lat injury. He did a good job working through his progression and I think he is still searching a little bit. Physically, we are trending in the right direction and now it's just getting him back into the rhythm. This is very similar to a spring training ramp up where you try not to focus on results too much early and then as you get a little bit later in the ramp up you want to start seeing outs. That is where Frankie is right now.' Sean Manaea is further behind. The left-hander's initial rehab appearance from an oblique strain was earlier in the week for Single-A Brooklyn. Stearns downplayed the idea the Mets may soon have too many rotation options. Clay Holmes, David Peterson and Griffin Canning have all excelled and Tylor Megill has pitched well enough to remain in the rotation. 'It's very rare where you actually get to the point where you have too many starting pitchers that you can roster,' Stearns said. 'If somehow, at some point, we get to that this season, I will have to make some decisions and I imagine those would be difficult decisions, but for now I very happy with how this group that we've had to this point has pitched. I am excited we continue to get healthier and get guys like Frankie and then ultimately Sean back in the rotation. I think that will make us stronger. Certainly deeper.'
