Tom Hiddleston Breaks Down His Dance Moves in ‘The Life of Chuck' and If He'd Ever Do a Musical
After building his career on dramatic roles and as Marvel's Loki, Tim Hiddleston is trying out a new title in his upcoming movie The Life of Chuck: dancer.
The film, which won the audience award at TIFF last year, is adapted from a Stephen King novella and follows three chapters in the life of an ordinary man named Charles Krantz (played in part by Hiddleston) whose death coincides with the end of the world. Along the way, it also features plenty of dancing from the actor.

'I've never danced quite like this before and I had some steps to dance, some miles to go before I felt skilled enough and practiced enough to pull off some of the techniques and styles that Chuck pulls off,' Hiddleston told The Hollywood Reporter at the film's Los Angeles premiere on Monday. 'I have a great affection for movie musicals, I really was thinking about them a lot in making this — thinking about Swing Time and Singin' in the Rain and Cover Girl.'

He continued, 'I've always loved dance in movies and it's not actually just those, if you think about Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey in Dirty Dancing or Jim Carrey and Cameron Diaz in The Mask or Joseph Gordon-Levitt in 500 Days of Summer or Little Miss Sunshine, dance is a part of the DNA of movies.' And as for if he'd ever star in a musical himself, Hiddleston joked, 'No one's knocking on the door yet but I'm always open.'
Co-star Karen Gillan teased she had seen Hiddleston dance before so she knew he had moves, but seeing him in the movie 'was a whole other level. I was blown away by what he did in this film.' His dancing even played a part in him getting the job, as director Mike Flanagan revealed he saw Hiddleston grooving on a late-night show and 'it wasn't the dancing that made me say, 'That's him,' it was the joy on his face. It's that regardless of if he was nailing the steps, he was feeling and channeling this incredible happiness. I said, 'That is exactly what this movie needs,' and he's perfect in it.'

The uplifting, emotional film is a stark change from what King is known for, and the same can be said for Flanagan, who has mostly worked in the horror genre. But, the filmmaker said, 'I think Steve, kind of at his heart, he's an optimistic humanist. Even in the darker stories, that's always there for him.'
'This feels more Stephen King to me than a departure, this is who he really is,' Flanagan added. 'This was a really special thing to work on together. I'm so grateful he trusted me with it and if it makes people a fraction as happy as his short story made me when I read it then we're onto something.'
Flanagan also commented on releasing this film in this current climate, after initially reading the novella during the pandemic shutdown. 'It really gave me an enormous amount of hope and comfort at that time; I feel like I need that now maybe more than I did then, and I think unfortunately for us we're all going to need it, we're all going to need reminders of that,' he explained. 'So I hope as dark as things may be, people feel some of the love and optimism and the comfort that this story has in it.'

Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman Buy an Australian Sailing Team
Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman are buying a competitive sailing team. The Deadpool & Wolverine duo are now co-owners of the Bonds Flying Roos, the Australian team that competes in SailGP, the international sailing competition founded in 2019 by Oracle founder Larry Ellison and world champion yachtsman Russell Coutts. SailGP sees 12 national teams competing in races held around the world using technologically advanced catamarans. Advertisement More from The Hollywood Reporter The addition of Reynolds and Jackman as co-owners coincides with Bonds, an Australian underwear brand, coming aboard as sponsor of the team, which will compete at the New York Grand Prix this weekend. 'We're incredibly excited to set sail together in this new adventure,' Reynolds and Jackman said in a joint statement. 'Hugh brings a deep love for and pride in his home country as well as being an avid fan of sailing. He will also be bringing his overly clingy emotional support human along for the ride. Apologies in advance to Australia. No comment on whether we're writing this in our Bonds. No further questions.' 'This is an incredible milestone for us and for our sport, having global icons Hugh Jackman and Ryan Reynolds come on board as co-owners of our team,' added Tom Slingsby, driver, CEO & co-owner of the Bonds Flying Roos. 'They bring unmatched star power, a love for storytelling, and a sharp sense of humour that fits perfectly with our team. With Bonds joining as our Title Partner and the launch of the Bonds Flying Roos, we're building something distinctly Australian; a team driven by spirit, resilience, and national pride.' Advertisement Reynolds has been active in the sports space, most recently acquiring the Welsh soccer team Wrexham AFC with his friend Rob McElhenney. The team has seen great success since the acquisition, and its growth has been chronicled in the FX series Welcome to Wrexham. Reynolds and McElhenney also invested in the Alpine Formula 1 team, as well as the Mexican soccer team Club Necaxa. Best of The Hollywood Reporter Sign up for THR's Newsletter. Ahsoka's Dave Filoni May Soon Be Running ‘Star Wars'
Ahsoka With Lucasfilm's Kathleen Kennedy on her way out, the open question is who will succeed her in that role. A new report points to a familiar choice, someone with both fans and detractors in the Star Wars space. In a lengthy THR piece about Disney executive power, when it comes to Lucasfilm, Dave Filoni is the name that comes up. Here's the section: Perfect, right? Well, here are the downsides: I've seen a lot of Star Wars fans read this and say 'of course you want a Lucas guy who knows a ton of dense Star Wars mythology!' I can see that position, but the counterpoint isn't wrong. Andor just wrapped up a two-season run as inarguably one of the best pieces of Star Wars content ever made. You might expect that to lead to an immediate appointment of whoever did that to a top spot, but that's Tony Gilroy, and he's simply moving on to other things. The most promising word from him is 'never say never,' but he's not even close to the conversation here. Dave Filoni at the "Ahsoka" FYC Event held at the DGA Theater on June 2, 2024 in Los Angeles, ... More California. (Photo by Gilbert Flores/Variety via Getty Images) A 'co-head' role with Filoni and Carrie Beck sounds like what DC is doing with James Gunn and Peter Safran, but it's very much Gunn as the face and captain. The same would be true of Filoni. Filoni has been heavily involved in The Mandalorian from its inception, as he is the upcoming Mandalorian and Grogu movie. His pet project series, Ahsoka, is currently the only Disney Plus project getting a second season, but one that appears like it will arrive three years after season 1. Filoni's issue is that he has a fixed set of die-hard fans who have been following his work since his animated series The Clone Wars and its follow-up, Rebels. But a lot of his work within the universe so far has been getting many of those characters into live-action and present-day Disney projects. Great for fans of those shows, but they still have to work on their own. Clone Wars Still, Filoni seems like the logical choice given the options at hand. I do wonder how much the success or failure of the upcoming Mandalorian and Grogu will factor into all this, as that's a film that will be emblematic of his brand, given that he co-wrote it with director Jon Favreau. There was a time when Favreau seemed to have been considered to run Lucasfilm with Filoni, but that idea isn't mentioned in this latest piece. It's a fraught time for Star Wars. Andor is a stunning achievement. Andor also cost $650 million for a show not that many people watched, and its talent is leaving to go elsewhere, including Kathleen Kennedy, who was the show's biggest champion. So, what happens now?
