Markham Stouffville pharmacist allegedly masquerading as deepfake porn pedlar, under investigation
A pharmacist at Oak Valley Health, which encompasses Markham Stouffville and Uxbridge hospitals, is under investigation by both his employer and the pharmacist college after a media report listed him as a key figure running a deep fake AI pornography website.
David Do was named in a CBC report on May 7 after an extensive investigation into his activities with MrDeepFakes[dot]com, the largest of this type of website in the world.
The website hosts thousands of deepfake porn videos where the images of celebrities, politicians, social-media influencers, other public figures as well as random people are made to appear, in realistic fashion, as though they are engaging in sexual activities.
Some of them are violent.
Viewers can also find deepfake creators on the website and hire them for hundreds of dollars to do work on specific videos with anyone's image.
Do is on leave from his work as a pharmacist, according to Oak Valley Health.
'(The) CBC published a story containing serious and concerning allegations against an Oak Valley Health employee,' wrote its communication and public affairs department in a statement to Metroland.
'The story alleges involvement in the distribution and creation of AI generated 'deep fake' pornography. This employee is not currently working at any of our sites. In consultation with legal counsel and in accordance with corporate policies, an internal investigation will be conducted.'
Meanwhile the Ontario College of Pharmacists said it is also investigating 'the conduct of this registrant.'
'As the investigation process is confidential, we are not able to provide any further details. Generally, the purpose of an investigation, which is conducted thoroughly and impartially, is to gather facts and evidence related to a registrant's alleged professional misconduct or incompetence and to present them to the inquiries, complaints and reports committee (ICRC),' the statement reads.
The ICRC can refer a registrant to its disciplinary committee, which can revoke or suspend the certificate of accreditation, impose terms, conditions or limitations on the certificate, order a fine, order payment of the college's costs and expenses, and reprimand the registrant.
MrDeepFakes has now shut down, citing the loss of a 'critical service provider' that has terminated service permanently.

Finnish startup AIATELLA has raised €2m ($2.27m) in financing to develop and scale its cardiovascular imaging technology powered by AI. The investment will support the company in conducting clinical trials and further developing its ultrasound-based preventative screening tool, which can identify and quantify carotid artery narrowing within minutes. Nordic Science Investments spearheaded the funding round, with contributions from Specialist VC, Business Finland, and Harjavalta Ventures, among other investors. The Automated Image Measurement technology of the startup leverages images from ultrasound, computed tomography, and magnetic resonance imaging to analyse vascular imaging. This multimodal technology identifies abnormalities and quantifies changes over time in those at risk. It significantly reduces the time specialists spend on manual image measurements and documentation. As a result, clinicians can dedicate more time to patient care. AIATELLA is currently navigating the medical approval processes in several European and North American countries, including France, the US, and the UK. AIATELLA co-founder and CEO Jack Parker said: 'Our technology helps medical professionals analyse imaging much more efficiently, and at an earlier stage, so patients can get help before it's too late.' Initially applied to the aorta artery, AIATELLA's vision extends to encompass all blood vessels in the body with its technology. Marc Garneau died after 'short but very difficult battle' with cancer, former staffer says
Marc Garneau died this week after being diagnosed with two types of cancer earlier this year, his former staffer says. The first Canadian to travel to space and former cabinet minister died on Wednesday. He was 76. Marc Roy, Garneau's former chief of staff, told CBC's Power & Politicsthat the former minister had been diagnosed with lymphoma and leukemia earlier this year. "He fought a short but very difficult battle with two very rare types of cancer," Roy told host David Cochrane. "Although his diagnosis was only a couple of months ago, he was well until four or five weeks ago. So it went very, very quickly … it's a very, very tough loss." Roy said Garneau only shared his diagnosis with a small circle that agreed to respect his wish for privacy. "[It was] something he wanted to keep with his family so he could concentrate on his time with his family and not distract his family by the attention it could have gotten," Roy said. WATCH | It's a tragic loss,' says former chief of staff: Beyond his legacy as an astronaut, Garneau held a number of federal cabinet positions since 2015, including in transport and foreign affairs. Roy said Garneau was "tremendous" to work for as he reflected on his time in politics. "It's a huge loss to government. I think that his years in Ottawa are filled with many contributions to improving safety and expanding policy. I think he will be remembered for that for decades to come," Roy said. The House of Commons held another moment of silence for Garneau on Thursday and MPs took time to pay tribute to their former colleague. "He reminded us that Canadians can dream big, that we could aim for the stars quite literally," Government House leader Steve MacKinnon said. "He became a powerful symbol of the achievement and the accomplishment of this great country of ours." Like MacKinnon, other MPs reflected on how Garneau inspired Canadians. "Mr. Garneau, the future will always be inspired by your life, which was so inspiring for all Canadians," Conservative MP Gérard Deltell said in French.
