Organ donor memorial at new hospital approved
A proposal for a public memorial to organ donation at the future new hospital has been approved by States members.
The proposal was brought by deputy Lucy Stephenson who said she wanted to see it funded by the Percentage for Art Scheme which requires developers to incorporate public art into their projects.
The States of Jersey said the Council of Ministers accepted the proposition to ensure a public memorial to organ donation is provided as part of the planning commitments of the Acute Hospital, Overdale or any following developments.
It added ministers recognised that organ and tissue donation saves and transforms lives.
The States of Jersey said the new hospital includes a commitment to public art and is developing a Therapeutic Arts Strategy (TAS).
Ministers understand it is appropriate for organ donors to be recognised through a memorial at the Acute Hospital as part of the broader TAS for the project, it said.
It added there was emphasis that an initiative of this nature needed to be handled with sensitivity to make sure it was both impactful and respectful.
The States said it didn't want it to be intrusive or distressing for current patients who may be facing life-changing or life-threatening conditions.
Ministers are confident the Programme's Arts Advisor would deliver the memorial sensitively and appropriately having successfully integrated organ donation memorials into healthcare arts strategies in the past, the States said.

Tony Hudgell's birth mother to be freed from prison
The birth mother of Tony Hudgell, who injured him so badly as a baby his legs had to be amputated, is to be released from prison. In 2018 Tony's birth parents Anthony Smith and Jody Simpson were sentenced to 10 years in prison. Tony was adopted by Paula and Mark Hudgell, from Kent, and has since raised millions of pounds for charity through a series of challenges. A spokesperson for the parole board confirmed a panel had directed that Simpson be released following an oral hearing. Both Simpson and Smith had denied assaulting, ill treating or neglecting their child. Mrs Hudgell posted on social media criticising the release. She said: "Tony has life long injuries every day he suffers due to her hands." In 2024, Tony, from West Malling, underwent surgery to be fitted for new prosthetics to allow him to walk without crutches. He has received the British Empire Medal for services to the prevention of child abuse. The parole board spokesperson said decisions were "solely focused on what risk a prisoner could represent to the public if released and whether that risk is manageable in the community". They added: "A panel will carefully examine a huge range of evidence, including details of the original crime, and any evidence of behaviour change, as well as explore the harm done and impact the crime has had on the victims." Hundreds of pages of evidence and reports would have been read in the lead up to an oral hearing, they said. They also said evidence from witnesses such as probation officers, psychiatrists and psychologists, officials supervising the offender in prison as well as victim personal statements may be given at the hearing. "Parole reviews are undertaken thoroughly and with extreme care. Protecting the public is our number one priority," they added. A Ministry of Justice spokesperson said: "This was a horrific crime that saw Tony Hudgell mercilessly tortured by his birth parents and our thoughts remain with him and his loved ones. "Now that the independent parole board has directed her release, Jody Simpson will be subject to strict supervision and licence conditions. Appeal after boy, 10, attacked by two dogs
Police are appealing for the owner of two dogs that attacked a 10-year-old boy to come forward. The boy was walking with his mother in Abbot's Wood, near Polegate, on 26 May when he was bitten on his legs, Sussex Police said. The dogs' owner is said to have fled the area after the attack, which happened shortly after 14:30 BST. Insp Anthony Oakensen said the boy was recovering at home after hospital treatment and that officers encouraged the woman involved to come forward. The owner of the dogs is described as having blonde hair tied in a ponytail and wearing a light coloured top and black leggings, police said. The dogs are possibly small terriers, Jack Russell's or Patterdales and one is thought to be named Molly, the force added. Insp Oakensen said: "This was a distressing incident for the child and his mum. "We are exploring a number of lines of inquiry." Anyone who witnessed the incident is urged to contact the force. Woman killed in four-vehicle crash
A woman in her 80s has died following a crash involving four cars in Exeter, police have said. Devon and Cornwall Police said the incident involving a Toyota Yaris, Vauxhall Movano van and two parked cars happened on Cowick Lane in Exeter at about 13:00 BST on 29 May. Officers said a passenger in the Yaris who was in her 80s has died after being taken to hospital with injuries. Police said the male driver of the Yaris, also in his 80s, suffered minor injuries.
