Hrishikesh Mukherjee apologised to Moushumi Chatterjee for ‘destroying her career' after she rejected Guddi: ‘You had hurt my ego'

Indian Express05-05-2025

Veteran actor Moushumi Chatterjee and filmmaker Hrishikesh Mukherjee worked together on just one project in their long, illustrious careers — the 1992 TV show Talaash. In a recent interaction, Moushumi revealed why she only starred in one project by the late legendary filmmaker, despite their family ties.
When asked about working with Hrishikesh Mukherjee only in Talaash, Moushumi told Nayandeep Rakshit on his YouTube channel, 'That was Hrishikesh's fault. I don't know what he thought or noticed.'
Revealing the reason behind their limited collaboration, Moushumi shared an instance when she once visited Hrishikesh Mukherjee's house after he had called her. Because they had family ties, she went to see him. At that time, the filmmaker confessed to having jeopardised her career and admitted to sabotage her career after she had refused one of his earlier projects.
Recalling her meeting with Hrishikesh at his home, Moushumi said, 'Hrishikesh couldn't walk, that was his condition at that time. He called me and said, ' Indu mujh maaf karde. Mein tera career barbad karne mein laga tha (Indu, I am sorry. I was trying to jeopardise your career). You remember you heard a story of a film and you agreed to do it also, but I had refused to cast you and gave the name of another heroine.''
Moushumi then shared why Hrishikesh wanted her to fail. She said, 'He told me, 'You had hurt my ego when you had refused to star in Guddi.'' Guddi was a 1971 film directed by Hrishikesh Mukherjee, which marked the debut of Jaya Bachchan in Hindi cinema.
During the conversation, Moushumi also revealed her side of the story and explained why she wasn't allowed to star in Hrishikesh's film. 'That time I was Calcutta girl. The character was required to wear a mini frock and we had the culture of wearing sarees from the age of 13. My father didn't allow me to star in the film. He said, 'She is 10th standard. She won't go to Mumbai.' I also wasn't comfortable wearing the mini frock. At that time, how would I have known who is Hrishikesh Mukherjee,' she admitted.
Talking further about her conversation with Hrishikesh, she added, 'These are his words, 'Indu I was so revengeful towards you that this girl refused to work with Hrishikesh Mukherjee, I will destroy her career.''
Later, Hrishikesh apologised for his mistake and even offered her a role in Talaash during the same meeting. 'He told me, 'Give me a chance to redeem myself. Please do Talaash. The heroine that has been suggested to me doesn't have that spiritualness that you have,'' the veteran star recalled.
