DRDO boosts hypersonic tech with scramjet combustor test

The Defence Research and Development Laboratory (DRDL), a unit of DRDO, on Friday conducted a long-duration ground test of an Active Cooled Scramjet Subscale Combustor for over 1,000 seconds at the newly built, state-of-the-art Scramjet Connect Test Facility in Hyderabad.
Describing the test as a significant milestone in hypersonic weapon technology, DRDO said this ground test follows an earlier one conducted for 120 seconds in January this year.
With the successful completion of this test, the system will soon be ready for full-scale, flight-worthy combustor testing, an official release said.
Scramjets are air-breathing engines capable of sustaining combustion at supersonic speeds without using any moving parts. Hypersonic cruise missiles, a class of advanced weaponry, can travel at speeds greater than five times the speed of sound (over 6,100 km/h) for extended durations, powered by air-breathing engines.
Air-breathing propulsion systems with supersonic combustion are crucial for sustained high-speed cruise conditions.
'This test validates the design of the long-duration scramjet combustor as well as the test facility. It is the result of integrated efforts by DRDO laboratories in collaboration with industry and academia, laying a strong foundation for the nation's hypersonic cruise missile development programme,' the release stated. Dr. Prahlada Rama Rao, of 'Akash', 'Creator' and the drone 'Destroyer' fame, feels that it encourages individuals to be patient and persistent in their efforts, reminding them that success often comes because of gradual progress and continuous hard work. There are no shortcuts. The project 'Akash' took 15 long years. During that period the entire crew spent sleepless nights and missed their heart beats during the period. The precision in targeting the enemy drones is the classic feature of 'Akash', The entire world is in awe of its power, while the enemy is yet to recover from coma. Dr Prahlada, as he is fondly addressed, felt that the relentless effort put in emphasizes the importance of appreciating the journey and the effort required to achieve something meaningful rather than just focusing on the outcome. Recalling his childhood days, he points out that he comes a humble family, which could not afford his higher education pursuits. Money can impact academic success, while excessive emphasis on it could overshadow other crucial factors like intrinsic motivation, hard work and the pursuit of knowledge for its own sake. According to him money is not the sole determinant of a student's achievement. After his engineering from Indian Institute of Sciences, Bangalore, in 1971 he joined Defense Research Development Laboratory (DRDL) as a young scientist, along with six more young engineering graduates, who called themselves FG-7 (friend's group of 7). They remain so till date. He earned a three-digit salary and could not dream of owning a bicycle or afford to travel by auto. RTC buses were the only viable mode of transportation. Money was a scarce commodity. However, the spirit to prove themselves was very high and the entire group proved their mettle as scientists of exceptional merit. He says he is indebted to the extraordinary and humble 'Missile Man', Dr APJ Abdul Kalam, his mentor, friend, philosopher and guide. Dr Prahlada said that ambitious projects and achievements require time and dedication, and that rushing or expecting immediate results were exercises in futility. Important assignments, especially those concerning the country's defence and security, cannot be done in a short period of time. They should be ready with solutions to trouble shooting problems. If resources are stretched too thin, the delays over-run the over-all performance that can lead to unsuccessful attempts. In typical style, he added that 'Tough times don't last but tough people do'. He was overwhelmed to see the success of his baby 'Akash' and grateful to the love the country showered on DRDO scientists. Dr Rao is a fascinating combination of a person with a scientific brain and a jolly demeanor. He possesses a sharp mind for details and logic but is easy to talk to. His approach to problems is systematic and methodical and are laced with a dash of wit and humour. He makes decisions based on evidence and logic but also has a rational, empathetic and understanding side that helps him connect with others. As friends grow and evolve their interests and varying priorities, geographical distance can make it difficult to maintain regular in person interactions, but he says family and friends are essential for a man's achievements and successes. Dr Prahlada Rama Rao is down-to-earth, practical and infectiously enthusiastic. He embodies a unique blend of intellectual rigour and joyful spirit, making him a delightful companion and an invaluable asset to the country.

The country's defence capabilities have advanced remarkably through indigenous efforts. India showed the world its capabilities through drone technology, radar systems, anti-drone weapons, or missile systems like Akash and BrahMos, former DRDO chairman G. Satheesh Reddy said on Friday. 'Our pinpoint accuracy and technological prowess during recent operations have amazed the global defence community. Today, countries are queuing up to procure Indian-made defence systems,' he said, adding that the country exported defence equipment worth ₹24,000 crore and the aim is to double it in a couple of years. Mr. Reddy, who is currently Honorary Advisor (Aerospace & Defence) in Andhra Pradesh government, was addressing the convocation ceremony of SR University, Hasanparthy in Hanamkonda district. He said young innovators should drive AI-based technologies, as the country continues to emerge as a global leader in defence, technology, and research. Mr. Reddy noted that the country is in a transformative phase with the landscape of education evolving rapidly. 'We now have premier institutions like IITs, IIMs, AIIMS, and IISERs across all States. More than 4.38 crore students are enrolled in higher education, more than the population of many nations. Among them, we produce over 1.4 million engineers every year,' he noted. India now ranks third globally in both annual publications and PhD output. In fields like quantum technology, we are sixth, and number one in AI conference citations — this showcases the country's growing technological momentum and intellectual strength, he said. The university's conferred honorary doctorate on Oscar-winning music composer M.M. Keeravani, recognising his contribution to Telugu cinema.

Odisha Dy CM Singh Deo inaugurates DNN defence laboratory in capital

BHUBANESWAR: Deputy chief minister KV Singh Deo on Thursday inaugurated a state-of-the-art Deep Neural Network (DNN) laboratory, first-of-its-kind in the state, set up on the premises of Krystellar Defence and Aerospace in Nayapalli of the city. The lab is designed to promote research in unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV), AI, electronic warfare, cognitive communications, AI-powered space surveillance, hypersonic threat detection, and tracking and situational awareness. It will provide a strategic platform for AI-powered innovation in missile defence, drone defence, radar signal processing and cyber defence. Founder and CEO, Krystellar Defence and Aerospace, Uday Bhanu Das said, DNN Lab will act as a key enabler for the development of indigenous, mission-ready AI solutions. The lab also aims to support key initiatives under 'Make in India' and 'Atmanirbhar Bharat', promoting self-reliant, secure and technology-enabled defence. Apart from R&D, DNN Lab will provide advanced training programmes and special workshops for defence personnel, scientists and engineers. The facility will also host collaborative projects with leading DRDO labs, aerospace PSUs and domestic defence technology innovators. Appreciating Das for setting up a high-tech facility for defence and space research, innovation and design in the state, Singh Deo encouraged the youth to emulate his work to realise the dream of a self-reliant India in defence preparedness. Defence and Space chairman Brigadier LC Patnaik also spoke on the occasion.
