Want to have a baby? UK warns against ‘skinny jabs' like Ozempic, Wegovy as animal tests show potential harm to newborns

LONDON, June 5 — The UK's medicine regulator warned Thursday against taking 'skinny jabs' to fight weight loss if trying to get pregnant or while breastfeeding because of their unknown effects on babies. The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) said popular jabs like Ozempic and Wegovy 'must not be taken during pregnancy, while trying to get pregnant, or during breastfeeding'. It urged women to use 'effective contraception while taking these medicines and, in some cases, for up to two months between stopping the medicine and trying to get pregnant'. 'Anyone who gets pregnant while using them should speak to their healthcare professional and stop the medicine as soon as possible... because there is not enough safety data to know whether taking the medicine could cause harm to the baby,' it added. Rebecca Reynolds, a professor of metabolic medicine at the University of Edinburgh, said there was 'hardly any available data from human studies' to know if the weight loss drugs were safe in pregnancy. 'The data from animal studies suggests the potential for harm with low birthweight and skeletal abnormalities, though more evidence is needed to assess if there are risks of taking these drugs in humans,' she added. The MHRA also warned about the impact of another weight-loss and diabetes injection, Mounjaro, on the effectiveness of oral contraception for people who are overweight. 'Therefore, those taking Mounjaro who are overweight and are using an oral form of contraception are advised to also use a non-oral form of contraception,' it said. Ying Cheong, a consultant in reproductive medicine at the University of Southampton, called the MHRA's advice 'both timely and necessary'. 'Gastrointestinal side-effects such as vomiting and diarrhoea can impair oral contraceptive absorption, increasing the risk of unintended pregnancy,' he said. — AFP

Oops! Finland's women's team mistakenly picks 51-year-old instead of young defender

HELSINKI, June 5 — Finland women's national team manager has apologised for mistakenly calling up a long-retired 51-year-old for this week's game against Serbia. When submitting the lineup, manager Outi Saarinen mistakenly entered former player Stina Ruuskanen instead of 23-year-old Djurgarden defender Nanne Ruuskanen. The error was not discovered until past deadline. Ruuskanen, who received her call-up 29 years after playing two senior internationals for Finland, took the mix-up in good humour. 'I'm definitely ready if the call comes! Just yesterday I was playing in a hobby league match ... so my game feel is good,' she told the Finnish newspaper Ilta-Sanomat. The younger Ruuskanen, who is no relation, was unable to take part in the Nations League match, a 1-1 draw in Helsinki on Tuesday. 'Nanne was, of course, disappointed but took the news very well considering the circumstances,' Saarinen said in a statement from the Finnish Football Association. 'I am very sorry for the mistake.' — Reuters

Man City set to sign Dutch midfielder Reijnders from AC Milan

AC Milan's Tijjani Reijnders was named the Serie A's best midfielder, despite Milan finishing 8th in the league. (AP pic) MANCHESTER : Manchester City have agreed a deal to sign Netherlands midfielder Tijjani Reijnders from Serie A side AC Milan on a five-year contract worth €55 million, a team source confirmed today. The 26-year-old Reijnders joined Milan in 2023 on a five-year contract, which he further extended until 2030 in March. He has made 104 appearances for the club in all competitions, winning one Italian Supercup title. He impressed during the 2024-25 season, scoring 15 goals in all competitions as he was named the Serie A's best midfielder, despite Milan finishing eighth in the league. Reijnders has also made 22 appearances for the Netherlands. His signing will boost Pep Guardiola's options in midfield following Kevin De Bruyne's departure, who will leave after a decade at the club having lifted six Premier League titles, as well as winning the Champions League and Club World Cup in 2023. City finished third in the 2024-25 Premier League season and only secured a Champions League berth on the final day of the campaign. They are next in action at the Club World Cup and face Wydad AC in their opening game on June 18, before taking on Al-Ain and Juventus in their Group G fixtures.
