French scientist Etienne-Emile Baulieu, the inventor of the abortion pill, died at the age of 98 at his home in Paris on Friday, his wife said.

The doctor and researcher, who achieved worldwide renown for his work that led to the pill, had an eventful life that included fighting in the French resistance and becoming friends with artists such as Andy Warhol.
'His research was guided by his commitment to the progress made possible by science, his dedication to women's freedom, and his desire to enable everyone to live better, longer lives,' Baulieu's wife Simone Harari Baulieu said in a statement.
Baulieu's most famous discovery helped create the oral drug RU-486, also known as mifepristone, which provided a safe and inexpensive alternative to surgical abortion to millions of women across the world.
For decades, he pushed governments to authorise the drug, facing fierce criticism and sometimes threats from opponents of abortion.

When Wyoming became the first US state to outlaw the abortion pill in 2023, Baulieu said it was 'scandalous'.

Red lines drawn: Russia's demands dim hopes for quick end to Ukraine war

Russia took weeks to present Ukraine with a 'memorandum' setting out its conditions for a ceasefire, as well as key guidelines for a comprehensive treaty to end the more than three-year-old war. To practically no one's surprise, it was a list of the Kremlin's long-standing, maximalist demands that Kyiv and its Western allies see as non-starters. Ukraine had set its negotiating stance before Monday's direct peace talks in Istanbul , emphasising its readiness to declare a 30-day ceasefire immediately without preconditions that was proposed by US President Donald Trump. Kyiv reaffirmed its refusal to abandon a bid for Nato membership and rejected acknowledgement of Russia's annexation of any of its regions. Both sides have established mutually exclusive red lines that make any quick deal unlikely. Moscow's demands, published in the Russian media, make it clear that President Vladimir Putin is determined to ensure the fulfilment of the goals in Ukraine he set when he launched the invasion on February 24, 2022. Porn sites block access in France in protest against new restrictions

From Wednesday, people in France will no longer be able to access pornography on several major sites – at least temporarily. Aylo, the company behind Pornhub, Redtube and Youporn, had plans to block content from the afternoon onwards in protest at new French age verification regulations, local media reports said on Tuesday. Instead of porn, the company will only display a statement on the new regulations in the country. Figures from the French digital regulatory authority Arcom from 2023 suggest 2.3 million minors visited porn sites every month, accounting for 12 per cent of the total number of users in the country. To better protect minors, the platforms are to create stricter control mechanisms. Simply clicking that you are over 18 will no longer be enough. To maintain anonymity, external sites will verify the age of users. The porn sites will then only receive confirmation that the person is of legal age and will not know their identity. The external service provider will know the identity of the user but not the reason for the age check.

200-year-old condom decorated with erotic art goes on display in Amsterdam museum

The Netherlands' national museum has a new object on display that merges art with Amsterdam's infamous red-light district: a nearly 200-year-old condom, emblazoned with erotic art. Advertisement The Rijksmuseum said the playful prophylactic, believed to have been made around 1830 from a sheep's appendix, 'depicts both the playful and the serious side of sexual health'. It is part of an exhibition called 'Safe Sex?' about 19th-century sex work that opened on June 3. The condom, possibly a souvenir from a brothel, is decorated with an erotic image of a nun and three clergymen. According to the museum, this is a reference to the Pierre-Auguste Renoir painting The Judgment of Paris, which depicts the Trojan prince Paris judging a beauty contest between three goddesses.
