Stunning details revealed as Brooklyn Bridge tragedy reminds horror of Baltimore Bridge collision
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum offered her condolences to kin of the two crew members who lost their lives after Mexican Navy sailing ship collided with the Brooklyn Bridge Saturday.
'We are deeply saddened by the loss of two crew members of the Cuauhtémoc Training Ship, who lost their lives in the unfortunate accident in New York Harbor. Our sympathy and support go out to their families,' Sheinbaum wrote in a post on X on Sunday.
She further said that the Mexican Consulate General and Ambassador to the United States are assisting the Mexican Navy in aiding individuals injured in the event. The ship, which was in New York as part of a global goodwill trip, was heading to Iceland at the time of the tragedy.
'We are monitoring the situation, and the Secretary of the Navy will continue to provide updates,' Sheinbaum added.
The Cuauhtémoc ship comprises a three-masted barque with a steel hull that is approximately 300 feet long and 160 feet tall, as per a news release.
Records from the government indicate that the Brooklyn Bridge has a 127-foot navigational clearance.
The Heroic Naval Military School, a top military college in Mexico, used the Cuauhtémoc sailing ship for training.
Mexico described the ship as a diplomatic symbol of its nation overseas.

According to a transportation expert who spoke to CNN, the voyage data recorder from the Mexican Navy ship will yield crucial details about what went wrong.
The data recorder will probably give detectives details about the ship's mechanics, including any 'control input,' as well as when power could have blown out, according to Mary Schiavo, as per former inspector general at the US Department of Transportation. Additionally, it might offer details about the river itself, such its depth and currents.
Schiavo further stated that the investigators might already possess the data and it could be in the process of examining it. According to her, they will have to investigate whether there was ever a breakdown in communication.
As the US agency is accustomed to conducting extensive, global investigations, Schiavo announced that Mexico will be a part of the National Transportation Safety Board's probe into the tragedy.
The Brooklyn Bridge tragedy occurred only sixteen months after a huge cargo ship struck Baltimore's Francis Scott Key Bridge on March 26, 2024.
The 1.6-mile structure collapsed as a result of the catastrophe, sending vehicles and people into the icy lake below. Six construction workers were killed when the Singaporean-flagged cargo ship, Dali, lost power, swerved off course, and crashed into the bridge.

Firefighting efforts intensify aboard Singapore vessel after explosion off Kerala coast

At the same time, Rajdoot, Arnvesh, Abhinav, and ICGS 513 are carrying out search and rescue operations in the area. Of the 22 crew members on board the vessel, 18 were rescued while four remain missing. After an earlier attempt failed, a tow connection was successfully made between the cargo ship and the Emergency Towing Vessel Water Lily, as well as a Coast Guard asset. This was achieved through joint efforts by the Marine Emergency Response Centre (MERC) and ICG personnel. Authorities say there is still risk due to hazardous cargo and hydrocarbon vapours near the fuel tanks. India battles container ship fire with 'hazardous' cargo
India's coast guard said it was battling to extinguish fires raging on a container ship carrying "hazardous" cargo off the southern coast to prevent a "potential ecological disaster". The 268-metre Singapore-flagged container vessel MV Wan Hai 503, carrying 22 crew members four of whom are missing caught fire about 78 nautical miles off India's Beypore port on Monday. Photographs released by the coast guard soon after the blaze broke out showed heavy containers scattered about the vessel, as if hurled up by a powerful explosion. Since then, fire has engulfed the ship. "The vessel is carrying 2,128 metric tons of fuel and hundreds of containers, including hazardous cargo, posing a serious risk to the marine environment and regional shipping routes," the coast guard said in a statement late Wednesday. It did not provide more details on the contents of the cargo, but said that "the situation remains critical". Eighteen crew members were rescued by the Indian coast guard and navy. Four crew one from Indonesia, two from Taiwan and one from Myanmar were listed as missing. The coast guard said it had "winched five salvage team members" and a diver onto the burning ship. "With the fire yet to be fully extinguished, efforts to establish a towline and pull the vessel away from the coast are underway to prevent a potential ecological disaster", it said. Mangaluru (Karnataka) [India], June 12 (ANI): Following the rescue of 18 crew members in the Singapore-flagged MV Wan Hai 503 ship explosion, six of them were admitted to the AJ Hospital in Mangaluru on Tuesday. According to plastic surgeon Dr Dinesh Kadam, a Chinese national with 40 per cent burns and an Indonesian citizen in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) are being closely monitored. Both patients require more time in the ICU, whereas the condition of the other four crew members is stable. One of the crew members will be discharged from the hospital, whereas others will stay because of the impact and facial burns caused due to the accident. 'A Chinese national with 40% burns and an Indonesian national are in ICU and are being closely monitored. Their vitals are stable though they require some more time in the ICU... All the other four are stable and one of them is being discharged while the others will stay in the hospital as they have some impact and facial burns', Dr Dinesh Kadam said in a self-made video. The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) on Wednesday winched five salvage team members and an aircrew diver onto the burning Singaporean container vessel MV Wan Hai 503 to facilitate towing operations. According to an official release from the Ministry of Defence, the vessel, which caught fire off the Kerala coast on June 9, continues to drift south-east within India's Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), approximately 42 nautical miles from Beypore, Kerala. The vessel is carrying 1.2 lakh metric tons of fuel and hundreds of containers, including hazardous cargo, posing a serious risk to the marine environment and regional shipping routes. 'Intensive firefighting efforts by ICG have significantly reduced visible flames, with only smoke now seen across the cargo holds and bays. However, the fire remains active in the inner decks and near fuel tanks,' the release stated. 'Five ICG ships, two Dornier aircraft, and a helicopter are engaged in the ongoing firefighting mission, supported by two vessels from the Directorate General of Shipping. A salvage team appointed by the ship's owners is working in coordination with ICG, and the Indian Air Force has been requested for additional aerial support,' it added. With the fire yet to be fully extinguished, efforts to establish a towline and pull the vessel away from the coast are underway to prevent a potential ecological disaster.
