Clean-up tackles Virginia Bush Reserve pond
A HOST of activities were held across the city last week for the annual eThekwini Enviro Week which aimed to connect communities with nature and sustainability, and celebrate the beauty and diversity of our environment.
It was no different in Durban North where the Kinship Programme, the Durban North Conservancy and Enviro Fixers Durban North held an 'Active for the Earth' programme at Virginia Bush Nature Reserve.
The Kinship Programme, an after-school initiative that facilitates immersive learning in nature for children, together with the environmental organisations, held a clean-up of the ponds at the lower reserve as well as a guided walk.
Durban North resident Michaela Geytenbeek, who runs the programme, explained the idea behind it.

'We work regularly at the reserve and we are all about mobilising young people to champion the environment. We've been actively working to clear the ponds of alien-invasive aquatic plants and we focused on another section on Thursday,' she said.
Jane Troughton of the Durban North Conservancy also shared her take on the significance of enviro week.
'We didn't feel it needed to be a specific thing but my interpretation of the enviro week is to celebrate our local eco-systems in any way that resonates for us. It is also a chance for us to be in nature and appreciate what we have on our doorstep, in this case the Virginia Bush Nature Reserve,' she said.
The past week also featured a variety of events including beach clean-ups, storytelling sessions, film evenings, guided nature walks, food garden demonstrations, compost-making, educational displays, and community discussions and workshops.

Air India chairman says crash should drive effort to build safer airline

Chandrasekaran on Monday told staff that last week's plane crash that killed at least 271 people should be a catalyst to build a safer airline, urging employees to stay resolute amid any criticism. In a town hall held at the headquarters of the Tata Group-owned airline near New Delhi and attended by 700 staff, Chandrasekaran said the crash was the "most heartbreaking" crisis of his career, a spokesperson told Reuters. "I've seen a reasonable number of crises in my career, but this is the most heartbreaking one," he said, according to a Tata Group spokesperson. "We need to use this incident as an act of force to build a safer airline," Chandrasekaran told the meeting. The Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner with 242 people on board bound for Gatwick Airport south of London began losing height seconds after take-off in Ahmedabad on Thursday, and erupted in a huge fireball as it hit buildings below. All but one on board were declared dead in the world's worst aviation disaster in a decade, and around 30 people died on the ground. The airline and the Indian government are looking at several aspects of the crash, including the plane's engine thrust, flaps, and why the landing gear remained open as the plane took off and then came down. "We need to wait for the investigation ... It's a complex machine, so a lot of redundancies, checks and balances, certifications, which have been perfected over years and years. Yet this happens, so we will figure out why it happens after the investigation," Chandrasekaran, 62, said during the staff meeting. He is also the chairman of the Tata Group conglomerate. The crash poses a new challenge for both Air India which has for years been trying to revamp its ageing fleet, and Boeing, which is trying to rebuild public trust following a series of safety and production crises. After taking the carrier over from the government in 2022, the Tata Group unveiled its investment plans to create a "world-class airline" after years of financial losses, persistent flight delays and poor maintenance under government ownership. On Monday, an Air India Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner plane bound for New Delhi returned to its origin of Hong Kong shortly after takeoff following a technical issue. "It's not easy to face criticisms," Chandrasekaran said. "We are going to get through this. We need to show resilience." In Ahmedabad, dozens of anxious family members have been waiting to collect bodies of relatives killed in the crash, as doctors worked to gather dental samples from the deceased and run identification checks. Only 99 samples have been matched so far, and 64 bodies have been handed over to the families, Rakesh Joshi, Medical Superintendent of a civil hospital in the city, said. Authorities late on Sunday also said both the flight data recorder and cockpit voice recorder have been located and secured, which will be key in the investigation. Rumer often posts snaps of her dad, who she adores, on Instagram, and on Sunday told Bruce she felt "lucky" that he was her father. However, sharing a montage of photos of the pair, including a recent black and white image in which she hugs the actor tightly, she admitted she wished she'd asked the star "more questions" about his "successes and struggles" while she could. Captioning the post, she wrote: "Today is hard, I feel a deep ache in my chest to talk to you and tell you everything I'm doing and what's going on in my life. To hug you and ask you about life and your stories and struggles and successes. I wish I asked you more questions while you could still tell me about it all." Rumer continued: "But I know you wouldn't want me to be sad today so I'll try to just be grateful reminding myself how lucky I am that you're my dad and that you're still with me and I can still hold you and hug you and kiss your cheek and rub your head I can tell you stories." However, the star's life is very different now after stepping away from the spotlight. Towards the end of his career, he was due to star in one of his last action roles, Out Of Death. The star had a huge part in the film, however it was suddenly made smaller, with director, Mike Burns, writing in an email to the screenwriter: "We need to abbreviate his dialogue a bit so that there are no monologues, etc." We now know Bruce had been diagnosed with aphasia, with the then 67-year-old's family later revealing the star would be retiring from acting. The cognitive disorder affects a person's ability to speak, understand, read and write. The following year, in February 2023, it was confirmed that Bruce's condition had progressed and that he had a definitive diagnosis of frontotemporal dementia, aka FTD. FTD is a progressive brain disease, which causes parts of the brain to stop working and deteriorate over time. Depending on where it starts in the brain, the condition affects behaviour as well as the ability to speak and understand others. In an October 2024 interview with Town & Country, Bruce's wife, Emma Heming Willis, revealed that her husband's language had changed. However, the actor had a childhood stutter and Emma initially assumed the sudden changes in his speech were to do with that. 'As his language started changing, it (seemed like it) was just a part of a stutter, it was just Bruce. Never in a million years would I think it would be a form of dementia for someone so young,' she said. Adding that she didn't know if Bruce was aware of his condition or not, Emma, who recently posted a video supporting National Caregivers Day, said: 'I say that FTD whispers, it doesn't shout. It's hard for me to say, 'This is where Bruce ended, and this is where his disease started to take over''. Meanwhile, Bruce's youngest daughter Talullah heartbreakingly revealed that her dad finds it so difficult to communicate, she knew he would never be able to make a Father of the Bride speech at her wedding. Opening up about the painful revelation, Tallulah said the family initially thought Bruce's behaviour was down to hearing loss from all the explosions on the set of Die Hard before telling Vogue magazine: 'Later that unresponsiveness broadened, and I sometimes took it personally. He had had two babies with my stepmother, Emma Heming Willis, and I thought he'd lost interest in me." Tallulah finally realised her father's health was declining when she was at a wedding and the father of the bride gave a heartfelt speech. She shared: "Suddenly I realised that I would never get that moment, my dad speaking about me in adulthood at my wedding. It was devastating,' she recalled. 'I left the dinner table, stepped outside, and wept in the bushes.'
