Tommy Tiernan: ‘I have no real facility for handling money. I love shopping, but I have no interest in investing or saving'

Tommy Tiernan starts every morning with a double espresso (and, very occasionally, a cigar) and no wonder. You'd want to be fairly caffeinated to keep up with the Galway-based actor/comedian's significant workload.

Sea Sessions pauses as chief Ray O'Donoghue steps down

Ray O'Donoghue has formally stepped down from his role with the Donegal-based Sea Sessions Surf & Music Festival to dedicate himself full-time to supporting and developing Dublin's night-time culture. As he focuses full-time on his role as Dublin City Council's Night-Time Economy Advisor, the festival will take a break in 2025, with ongoing discussions about its potential return in a refreshed format in the future. Mr O'Donoghue, who joined Sea Sessions in 2010, played a central role in the event, which blended music, surf, sport, and beach culture in Bundoran. Reflecting on his decision, he said: "I've been promoting festivals and live events since 1999, from early gigs in Dublin to my first festival, Coastal Beats, on the west coast. "Sea Sessions has been a huge part of that journey, and I've loved seeing it grow into one of the country's best-loved festivals. But now, I feel the time is right to focus fully on my role with Dublin City Council. "Being Night-Time Economy Advisor is a big undertaking, and my experience running events has given me valuable insight. Dublin's night-time culture is evolving, and I'm excited to play a part in reimagining how the city comes alive after dark - with safer, more inclusive, accessible, and vibrant options for everyone." Sea Sessions has earned numerous accolades, including the IMRO Award for Best Festival, and regularly attracted up to 10,000 attendees per day. The festival has hosted acts such as Dermot Kennedy, Tinie Tempah, Primal Scream, Dizzee Rascal, Bastille, The Coronas, and Kodaline. The official statement from the organisers reads: "Sorry for being so quiet… Sea Sessions is taking a break in 2025. We hope to be back with more information soon." Mr O'Donoghue now leads Dublin City Council's efforts to develop a vibrant, safe, and inclusive night-time economy - driving pilot initiatives and long-term strategies that support cultural activity, improve access, and encourage new uses of public space and venues after 6pm.

Inside Sebastian Schub's debut EP release

As the calendar turns to June, anticipation has been building for the release of Sebastian Schub's debut EP. The German-born, London-based singer-songwriter has been steadily gaining attention with his emotive baritone and heartfelt storytelling, drawing comparisons to legendary artists such as Jeff Buckley and Glen Hansard. From his early days busking on the streets of London and Dublin to performing at renowned venues across the globe, Schub's journey is a testament to his dedication and inherent talent. As the calendar turns to June, anticipation has been building for the release of Sebastian Schub's debut EP. Chatting to ahead of the release of 'Sing Like Madonna' on June 6, he delved into the inspirations behind his upcoming release, his evolution as an artist, and the stories that have shaped his music. 'Previously I was writing and recording all my songs completely on my own in my basement at home,; he began. 'So moving the process into a different space and inviting collaborators into that space took some time and adjustment. 'But in the end I managed to find a brilliant partner in Dann Humme who has a studio in Barry, Wales. We recorded most of the songs in his church turned studio there. An amazing experience. ' Among the tracks on the EP, Schub is particularly eager for listeners to experience 'Blisters & Sunburn, adding: 'It has been a real highlight to play on tour, so I'm really excited for people to finally be able to listen to it at home as well.' Schub's connection to Dublin runs deep, both musically and personally, with his experiences in the city's lively busking scene having been instrumental in shaping his artistry. 'I have always been drawn to the musical community here,' he continued. 'I don't think I've ever come to Ireland and not met a musician that I had something to learn from. 'For me Dublin offered a sense of creative escape from a very busy, competitive, individualistic London. After Covid I went to live in Dublin to find my feet again and it was on Grafton Street that I reconnected with music. This place is very very dear to me.' 'Sing Like Madonna' will be available to stream on June 6.
