Mithi River desilting: ED summons actor Dino Morea, BMC officials
At least eight people, including actor Dino Morea, his brother, and some BMC officials have been summoned by the Enforcement Directorate for questioning next week in a money laundering case linked to an alleged ₹65 crore worth Mithi River desilting "scam", official sources said on Saturday (June 7, 2025).
The notices came after the federal probe agency on Friday (June 6, 2025) searched more than 15 premises linked to these people in Mumbai in Maharashtra and Kochi in Kerala.
"Around eight to nine people, including actor Dino Morea, his brother Santino and some Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) officials, have been asked to appear before the agency at the ED office in Mumbai on different dates next week," a source said.
Their statements will be recorded under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) once they depose, he said.
Dino Morea's house in the Bandra (West) area, apart from premises linked to his brother, and those of BMC officials and contractors, were searched by the ED on Friday.
The ED case stems from a Mumbai Police economic offences wing (EOW) FIR filed in May against 13 people, including contractors and civic officials, for an alleged Rs 65.54 crore scam in the tenders awarded from 2017-2023 for desilting of the Mithi River which flows through Mumbai and acts as a stormwater drainage channel for the metro city.
The Uddhav Thackeray-led undivided Shiv Sena controlled the cash-rich BMC from 1997 till the party's split in 2022. After the expiry of the general body in 2022, the civic body was controlled by the state government, which was then headed by Eknath Shinde.
It was alleged by the police in its complaint that BMC officials tailored the tender for the desilting contract in such a way that it benefited a particular supplier of machinery, and the contractors reportedly generated fraudulent bills for transporting the sludge out of Mumbai.
Morea and his brother were questioned by the Mumbai Police EOW in this case last month. The 49-year-old actor has been questioned twice by police.
The Morea brothers, it is understood, were questioned by the police about their alleged links with alleged middleman Ketan Kadam, arrested in the case along with another accused, Jai Joshi, apart from some financial transactions made in a company linked to Santino.
Kadam and Joshi, according to police, were involved in the renting out of 'silt pusher' machines and multi-purpose amphibious pontoon machines to contractors who were carrying out Mithi river desilting work.
This is the second time that the actor has been in the crosshairs of the ED, as, in 2021, the agency had attached his assets as part of a money laundering investigation linked to an alleged bank fraud case against Gujarat-based pharmaceutical company Sterling Biotech and its promoters.
The plan to desilt the river was planned by the Mumbai civic authorities following the 2005 floods, which brought the city to a grinding halt.

UP CM directs officials to take action against fake, shell companies
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Saturday directed officials to take action against shell companies to stop the attempts to misuse the facilities meant for genuine traders. While conducting a high-level review of the State Tax Department, the CM directed officials to ensure transparency in tax collection and adopt a policy of technological efficiency and strict enforcement. "Tax evasion is a national crime that negatively impacts development plans and welfare schemes," he said. Stressing that the Goods and Services Tax (GST) is a consumer-based tax system, he noted that areas with higher population density are naturally expected to generate more tax revenue. He instructed officials to develop special strategies for zones where tax collection is below average. Adityanath directed that information on suspicious firms registered under Central GST (CGST) be shared with the Centre for cancellation of their registration. For firms under State GST (SGST), he ordered in-depth departmental investigations, and if irregularities are found, their registration should be canceled and FIRs lodged. The CM emphasised the need for on-site inspection of all newly registered firms, stating "fake companies should not be allowed to obstruct the rights of honest taxpayers. CM Adityanath said that such acts are an attempt to misuse the facilities meant for genuine traders, which is unforgivable. Such inspections are essential to ensure that genuine businesses can operate fairly and without interference," he said. During the meeting, officials informed the CM that Rs 18,161.59 crore in GST and VAT had been collected during April and May against the financial year 2025-26 target of Rs 1,75,725 crore.

Circular rail network on Bengaluru's outskirts to cost Rs 81,000 crore
Bengaluru: The proposed Circular Rail Link Project on Bengaluru's outskirts requires an investment of Rs 81,000 crore and acquisition of 2,500 acres of land. Spanning 287km, the double-line circular network will connect Nidavanda, Doddaballapur, Devanahalli, Malur, Heelalige, Solur and other peripheral towns. It aims to decongest rail traffic in the city's core areas and cater to residents on the outskirts and nearby districts by enabling more suburban rail services. On Saturday, minister of state for railways V Somanna held a meeting with MPs from Bengaluru and adjoining districts to discuss the project. The railway board sanctioned a final location survey (FLS), which is currently being conducted in phases. The minister said the central govt will fund the entire project. "This is a long-term initiative meant to benefit Bengaluru over the next 50 years," he said. The actual land requirement and cost will be finalised after the detailed project report (DPR) is ready. Completing the FLS is expected to take several months. Over 340 encroachments on Beed Bypass Road removed, drive resumes on Monday
Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar: The civic body has cleared more than 340 illegal structures along the Beed Bypass Road during its current anti-encroachment drive. The operation, which started on June 3, will continue from Monday following a two-day pause due to festivities. "The Beed Bypass Road has emerged as one of the fastest-developing commercial and residential areas of the city. The stretch of nearly 6km, from Mahanubhav Chowk to Deolai Chowk, had different encroachments, even on service roads and other road infrastructure. These illegal structures are being removed during the special drive," he said. According to Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar Municipal Corporation (CSMC) officials, the removed structures included both permanent and temporary constructions. "A public notification was issued appealing to people to remove the encroachments. Some of them removed their illegal structures on their own while the remaining did not pay heed to the appeal and attracted fines," Deshmukh said, adding that the drive was carried out under the supervision of municipal commissioner G Sreekanth. Local residents from Satara Deolai and surrounding areas have requested continued action until all unauthorised structures are removed. "Some big hotels and other commercial establishments have encroached upon the service road, causing huge inconvenience to locals. The authorities should also pay attention to service roads being used for illegal vehicle parking by these establishments," said Rajshekhar Wamshi, a private professional.
