Culture connect
Two Bahraini artists are getting their work spotlighted as part of a transformation of an ambassadorial home during an initiative that was inaugurated last night.
Renowned Bahraini creatives Adnan Al Ahmad and Aysha Hafez are part of the 'Artists in the Residence' collaborative project launched by the German Embassy and Rashid Al Khalifa (RAK) Art Foundation.
'At the RAK Art Foundation, we believe that artistic collaboration and cultural exchange are vital in building bridges between communities,' RAK founder and National Arts Council chairman Shaikh Rashid bin Khalifa Al Khalifa explained.
'This initiative with the German Embassy exemplifies how shared creativity can deepen mutual understanding and provide our artists with meaningful opportunities to engage with global audiences.
'We are proud to support platforms that celebrate the power of art to connect and inspire.'
The core component of the cultural initiative is the transformation of German Ambassador Clemens Hach's residence with unique Bahraini pieces by Adnan and Aysha.
'I am deeply impressed by the result of this artistic transformation of my residence,' Ambassador Clemens added.
'Their wonderful artworks harmonise amongst themselves and with the space, and I am eternally grateful to Shaikh Rashid and his team and the artists for their support in making this artistic experiment work.'
Adnan, a graduate of the École des Beaux-Arts in Besançon, France, approaches his art through a deeply personal yet analytically structured lens.
His work combines geometric form with layered composition, shaped by memory, imagination, and emotion.
Through a scientific and symbolic methodology, Adnan reinterprets old and recent memories into new visual narratives, creating immersive pieces rich with introspection and abstraction.
'My works represent me personally and present stories and tales that pertain to me as a human being, with feelings, emotions, and memories like any other human being on earth,' he told GulfWeekly.
'I try to express them and present them so that others can share them with me, perhaps the stories and tales will be similar, and art will be a point of convergence and communication, united by a common factor: colour, calligraphy and fabric.
'With this project, I want to show Germans and foreigners, in general, that Bahraini artists are capable of reaching international fame and keeping up with any other artist anywhere with their art, style, culture, and knowledge.
'Bahrain has a rich history and an ancient civilisation that relied on the visual arts in many of its manifestations, such as Dilmun seals, textile and pottery industries, and ancient traditional architecture.
'The history of modern art here began in the 1950s and Bahraini artists have developed their art significantly, advancing in their presentation of their subject matter, style, and technique.
'They have become competitive in international forums as artists of their own stature and influence.
'It is a great honour for me personally to represent my country, Bahrain, anywhere in the world as an ambassador for my country, and to represent all Bahraini artists who are no less than me in level, performance, style and concept.'
Aysha uses limestone as a mould for her forms, reflecting both delicacy and structure.
Her work embraces themes of peace, beauty, and nature, symbolised by birds, doves, and olive branches, offering a poetic reflection on serenity and generosity.
One of her collections highlighted in this exhibition is 'Whiteness', featuring a series of white sculptures using wood, stones, marble powder and other mixed media.
'In this series, I used limestone because it is easy to work on and make a mould for artworks down the road, and then I used marble powder for the final result.
'Some of my artworks have limited prints, but most of them are one of a kind.'

Making an impression
Women in Bahrain are embracing this season's colours, fabrics, prints and silhouettes, with some global fashion trends even inspiring traditional outfits and modest wear, observes Maliha Obaid. She spoke to experts on the topic and has listed creative ideas for your wardrobe, coinciding with the festive weekend. Seasonal hues Pastels are dominating the runways this season, with light colours like butter yellow, powdery pink and pistachio green being some of the popular hues. Abayas in pastel shades are also increasingly popular among Arab women and can be paired with a white hijab. 'Light yellow has been trendy since last season but it wasn't until recently that people have adopted the colour,' said Bahraini freelance costume designer Fatima AlBastaki, who has almost a decade of experience in styling Arab celebrities. Fine print and fabric Floral designs and polka dots are recurring styles on the Spring-Summer 2025 runways, and are versatile too. 'Although I am not a pattern girl, the current trends and my love for blooms are making me lean into floral prints, especially the ones with a pop of colour,' said 22-year-old Bahraini fashion designer and entrepreneur Fatima Alturabi, who has had a penchant for fashion from a young age. According to a report in Marie Claire, 'scarf prints' including intricate floral patterns and paisley motifs, typically found on scarves and embodying the 'dolce vita' spirit, are also popular this season. AlBastaki noted that patterns like dantel (embroidered lace) are very common now while others like polka dots are making a comeback. Skirts for days Pleated skirts or 'the school skirt' and flouncy designs are among the popular global trends this summer, which can be adapted to suit the local sensitivities with full-length pieces. 'Skirts can be worn on occasions and can also be dressed down into a more casual outfit,' Alturabi, who likes to tailor her clothes herself, explained. 'I think silk skirts are nice but I don't recommend silk tops to avoid a possible transparent shape. Pieces like button-ups are a modest fashion staple and can be styled in many ways – they work well with long skirts,' she explained,. AlBasktaki added that her favourite piece to style with a long skirt is a blazer. 'No matter what you wear, you can always style it to suit the modest aesthetic,' she highlighted. Dress to impress British Vogue says that 'nightie dresses', commonly designed with cotton poplin and silk, is 'this summer's answer to a throw-on dress' and we, at GulfWeekly couldn't agree more; it's reminiscent of the sun dress – a seasonal staple – or lacy Bohemian dresses that are turning heads on the runways. 'Maxi dresses have always been a go-to here in Bahrain. They just work with our weather and the way we dress and you can style them up or down. 'Women in the kingdom are more into simple styles and fabrics that feel light and breathable. I think it's all part of that shift towards effortless fashion pieces that still look elegant,' Alturabi noted.

Farah Abdelaal proposes platform linking movies and medicine
TDT | Manama A groundbreaking PhD study by a Bahraini researcher is proposing an unexpected but potentially powerful alliance between the pharmaceutical and film industries. Farah Abdelaal, a PhD candidate in Innovation Management at the Arabian Gulf University, has developed a firstof-its-kind business model and digital platform to unite the two sectors. Her dissertation offers a qualitative framework that aims to revolutionise how medical content is communicated and financed. Health Meets Storytelling The platform concept, still in prototype stage, envisions using cinematic storytelling to disseminate critical health information, raise awareness of conditions like neurological disorders, and even influence public behaviour. 'Films have the ability to reach hearts and minds,' her research notes, adding that blending narrative power with scientific insight can make complex medical issues more relatable and actionable. AI and Neuro-Medicine The study draws from innovation theory, artificial intelligence, business modelling, and neuro-medicine to argue that merging these fields can benefit not just patient education but also pharmaceutical companies seeking sustainable, socially impactful ways to engage with the public. Abdelaal's model also outlines a revenue-sharing mechanism to make such collaborations financially viable for both industries. The research is part of a growing trend that views cross-sector innovation as essential to tackling modern challenges. Her work adds to the region's growing contribution to global discussions around digital health, creative industries, and the evolving role of AI in medicine.
