Newport need 'change' to move forward
Newport County interim manager Dafydd Williams says "a lot needs to change" at the club berfore next season.County's disappointing 2024-25 ended with a 4-1 home defeat by Tranmere Rovers which saw them finish just above the League Two relegation zone.Williams took charge for the final two games of the season after Nelson Jardim recently left his role as head coach."Reflecting on the whole season, whoever you point the finger at, we've probably finished in the position we deserve to finish," Williams told BBC Sport Wales."It's not good enough for this football club and those that are here next year – that has to be a real reality check for them because in my opinion a lot of it is unacceptable."A lot needs to change to move forward and to go in the right direction as a football club."
County chairman Huw Jenkins, who wants Jardim's successor in place by the end of the month, acknowledged the team had struggled for consistency.Jenkins said he wanted to create a buzz at Newport once again with the club challenging for the play-offs as well as FA Cup runs."I think this club, mid-to-long-term, is an exciting place to be," Williams added."I think we can learn a lot of lessons from this season in terms of what's needed and what's required and whether that's with the players that are in the building or potentially coming in over the summer."The lads that are here next year, that are contracted, they need to learn the harsh reality of what League Two."

Athletic Bilbao winger Nico Williams has told Bayern Munich he is 'very open' to joining them this summer, according to reports in Germany. Arsenal and Chelsea have Williams on their shortlist for the summer transfer window with both Premier League clubs wanting to strengthen in wide areas. Bayern, however, will need to pay the €58 million (£48.1m) release clause in Williams' deal with Bilbao, as well as meet the 22-year-old's salary demands, which are understood to be in the region of €380,000 (£322,000) a week. More Trending Speaking in April, Williams gave no indication that he would push for a move away from Bilbao this summer. 'I'm super happy here and feel well,' the winger said. 'I've always wanted to feel important here.' Bilbao have also been in talks with Williams to extend his contract, which expires in the summer of 2027. Jonny Evans makes surprise announcement on future after Man Utd release him
Jonny Evans has been released by Manchester United and the defender remains uncertain about what could come next in his career when he leaves the Red Devils this month Jonny Evans is in no rush to make a decision on his future after it was confirmed he would be released by Manchester United. The defender is set to see his contract expire at the end of the month with no renewal forthcoming. But despite the 37-year-old being firmly in the twilight of his career, no official announcement on a retirement has arrived, though he is expected to do so. The Northern Irish defender is set to reflect on his situation before making a decision over his next steps. Evans is set to end his second spell at Old Trafford having returned to the club in 2023 to take on a senior role in the dressing room and to provide additional depth in United's backline. The veteran probably played more than anticipated making 30 appearances in his first season back to see his contract extended by a further year. Evans was called upon less frequently last term in a difficult season and joins the likes of Christian Eriksen and Victor Lindelof in exiting the club. Tom Heaton remains in discussions over potentially extending his stay. It had been suggested Evans' departure could mark the end of his career, after Evans noted 'It was stay here or retire' last summer. The defender is yet to make plans however. "I'm not sure yet," Evans told BBC Sport NI when asked about his future . "I'll take a bit of time. I don't feel like I'm in a rush to do anything." In his eight years away from Manchester, Evans spent three years at West Bromwich Albion and five years at Leicester. The central defender added an FA Cup victory in 2021 to three Premier League titles, a Champions League, an FA Cup and two League Cup success across his two stints with the Red Devils. Evans earned 107 caps for Northern Ireland and provided some analysis on where the nation stands during his appearance on BBC. The ex-Sunderland loanee is hopeful his former boss, Michael O'Neill can lead the country to World Cup qualification. "When you've got Michael O'Neill in charge, he gives everyone a little bit of hope," said Evans, "He's taken the team to a major tournament before and if you want anyone in charge, it's him. "When I look at this team it reminds me of ourselves. He's playing five at the back and he has Isaac Price, he's on a good run of form. "You look throughout the team, you see Dan Ballard and Trai Hume getting promoted, they'll be playing Premier League football and that'll only be good for the team. I'm excited. Palace co-owner John Textor would sell shares for Europa League chance
The American, whose Eagle Football Group owns 43 per cent of Palace, has imperilled the club's chance of a first-ever European campaign owing to his involvement with Ligue 1 side Lyon, but is ready to offload his stake to his fellow co-owners in order to bring the saga to an end. UEFA does not allow clubs with the same ownership to compete in the same European competitions in a season. However it is also reported that the European governing body does not consider Textor's influence at Selhurst Park to be decisive and is leaning towards allowing the club into the Europa League regardless. The PA news agency understands no formal decision is likely on Palace's fate until the end of June. Textor has previously spoken of his frustration at how little influence his stake entitles him to, over football matters. Victory for Oliver Glasner's side over Manchester City in last month's FA Cup final gave them their first major trophy and with it a first crack at Europe. Nottingham Forest – who are owned by Evangelos Marinakis – have written to UEFA challenging Palace's involvement in the Europa League (Mike Egerton/PA) However, Nottingham Forest have since written to UEFA to challenge Palace's Europa League spot and in the hope of taking their place. Forest's owner Evangelos Marinakis, who also owns Greek side Olympiacos, placed his shares in the club in a blind trust before the governing body's March 1 deadline, anticipating Nuno Espirito Santo's side's European qualification. At present Forest, who finished seventh in last season's Premier League, are set to enter the Conference League but would take Palace's Europa League place, should they be deemed ineligible.
