Germany says will continue arms deliveries to Israel even as public wants stricter control

A survey published Wednesday found that 73 per cent of Germans favor tighter controls on arms exports to Israel, with nearly a third supporting a complete ban. But Berlin says it will continue sending arms to Israel read more
Germany will continue sending arms to Israel despite recent concerns over Israeli military actions in Gaza, the country's foreign minister said Wednesday (June 4), reversing earlier signals that the government might reconsider exports.
Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul told a contentious session in parliament that Israel faces threats from Yemen's Houthi rebels, Lebanon's Hezbollah militia and Iran, adding: 'Germany will continue to support Israel, including with weapons deliveries.'
The comments followed Wadephul's own remarks last week, when he suggested Germany was assessing whether Israel's military actions in Gaza comply with international law, a statement that drew criticism from lawmakers within his own CDU/CSU conservative bloc.

Wednesday's parliamentary session was temporarily halted when a protester shouted slogans including 'Free Palestine' and 'No to genocide' from the spectator gallery. Security officers quickly escorted the protester out.

Public opinion favours stricter arms controls
The decision to maintain arms shipments comes despite significant public opposition in Germany. A survey published Wednesday found that 73 per cent of Germans favor tighter controls on arms exports to Israel, with nearly a third supporting a complete ban.
Since Hamas militants attacked southern Israel on Oct. 7, 2023, Germany has approved military equipment exports worth 485 million euros ($553.7 million), becoming Israel's second-largest arms supplier after the United States.
Exports included firearms, ammunition, military components, special armored vehicles, electronic equipment, and specialized gear for Israel's army and navy, according to figures from the German government published Tuesday.
Chancellor Merz's criticism marks policy shift
The arms-export debate intensified last week when Chancellor Friedrich Merz publicly criticized Israel's escalating airstrikes on Gaza, calling them neither justified nor comprehensible.
Merz's statement and Wadephul's earlier warnings prompted speculation of a potential shift in German arms-export policy, particularly toward possible sanctions against Israel. However, Wednesday's announcement appeared aimed at dispelling uncertainty over Germany's continuing military support.
Growing German discomfort over Gaza
According to a poll by German public broadcaster ARD, about three-quarters of Germans support Merz's critical stance on Israeli military actions in Gaza. The poll, conducted June 2-3 among 1,292 respondents, also showed that 55 per cent reject the view that Germany holds a special historical responsibility toward protecting Israel due to the legacy of the Holocaust.
Just 13 per cent said Germany should unconditionally stand with Israel in Middle East conflicts, while 74 per cent opposed such unconditional support. Additionally, 63 per cent said they believe Israel's military response in Gaza has gone too far, up six percentage points since a similar survey in August.
No legal challenges against Germany's arms exports to Israel have succeeded, including a recent case brought by Nicaragua at the International Court of Justice.

Suspect in anti-Zionist molotov attack to appear in federal court on hate crime charge

Mohamed Sabry Soliman, 45, is accused in Sunday's attack on the weekly event in Boulder, which investigators say he planned for a year read more A man affixes a bouquet of flowers to a makeshift memorial for victims of an attack outside of the Boulder County, Colo., courthouse, in Boulder, Colo. AP The man who tossed Molotov cocktails at protesters bringing attention to Israeli captives, telling police that his motivation was to 'kill all Zionist people,' is scheduled to appear in federal court for the first time on Friday to face a hate crime charge. Mohamed Sabry Soliman, 45, is accused in Sunday's attack on the weekly event in Boulder, which investigators say he planned for a year. The federal case is being adjudicated in Denver, but Soliman was also charged in state court in Boulder Thursday with attempted murder and assault counts as well as counts related to the 18 Molotov cocktails police say he carried to the demonstration. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Soliman, an Egyptian native, has been unlawfully residing in the United States, according to federal investigators. Soliman is represented by state and federal public defenders, who do not comment on their cases to the media. Investigators say Soliman told them he had intended to kill all of the roughly 20 participants at the weekly demonstration on Boulder's popular Pearl Street pedestrian mall, but he threw just two of his 18 Molotov cocktails while yelling 'Free Palestine.' Soliman told investigators he tried to buy a gun but was not able to because he was not a 'legal citizen.' Soliman did not carry out his full plan 'because he got scared and had never hurt anyone before,' police wrote in an arrest affidavit. State prosecutors say 15 people and a dog were victims of the attack. Not all were physically injured, and some are considered victims for the legal case because they were in the area and could potentially have been hurt, 20th Judicial District Michael Dougherty said Thursday. The dog was among the injured, which resulted in an animal cruelty charge being filed against Soliman, Dougherty said. Three victims remained in the hospital Friday, U C Health University of Colorado Hospital spokesperson Dan Weaver said. Soliman told investigators that he waited until after his daughter graduated from school before launching the attack, according to court documents. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Federal authorities want to deport Soliman's wife and their five children, who range from 4 to 17 years old, but a judge issued an order Wednesday halting deportation proceeding until a lawsuit challenging their deportation can be considered. U.S. immigration officials took Soliman's wife and children into custody on Tuesday. They are being held at a family immigration detention center in Texas.

Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Friday said the Delhi government will set up 7,000 smart classrooms in its schools by the end of the year. She added that 175 digital libraries and 100 A.P.J. Abdul Kalam

Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Friday said the Delhi government will set up 7,000 smart classrooms in its schools by the end of the year. She added that 175 digital libraries and 100 A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Language Labs offering foreign language instruction in English, French, and German will also be made operational in the Delhi government-run schools. The CM made the announcements following a meeting she chaired with the principals of Delhi government schools in her Assembly constituency of Shalimar Bagh. 'Intimidating parents' In a social media post later in the day, she spoke about the 'alarming reports of schools employing bouncers to intimidate parents and students'. 'Education is a right, not a business. Our children deserve compassion, not coercion. Schools must remain spaces of learning, values, and nation-building,' the CM said. Her comments come a day after the Delhi High Court expressed dismay at the 'reprehensible practice' by Delhi Public School, Dwarka, of allegedly hiring bouncers to block the entry of the students who had not paid the increased fee. Ms. Gupta hit out at the previous Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government for engaging in 'propaganda about improving education' while 'failing to provide' basic education infrastructure despite being in power for 11 years, citing the state of a government school in her constituency's Haiderpur village. 'The area neither has an English-medium school nor a higher secondary school where science is taught,' she said. The CM added, 'Their much-celebrated school buildings were structurally weak — one built in 2018 deteriorated within just two years. This exposes their 'education model' and shows that it was merely a facade.' She said that many government schools lack proper sports grounds, face hygiene and security issues, and suffer from acute staff shortages. 'Ad hoc hirings' 'Many still do not have full-time principals and are run on ad hoc arrangements,' said Ms. Gupta. 'We are ensuring recruitment for all vacant positions, appointment of permanent principals, and deployment of adequate security and sanitation employees in our schools,' said the CM. She also criticised the Delhi Board of School Education, which was started by the previous AAP government, saying, 'This parallel board could pose issues for students seeking college admissions and may affect the recognition of their certificates in India and abroad. Such decisions [to create a new board] endanger the future of our children.' Ms. Gupta also inaugurated a water cooler at a school in Shalimar Bagh and said that plans are being made to instal such machines in all the nearly 1,000 schools run by the Delhi government as well as in other parts of the city. AAP did not issue any response to the allegations levelled by the CM.

Israel emerges as leading global arms exporter; names of buyers will surprise you, they are..., India is...

(Representational image: New Delhi: Israel's military exports have set a new record. This record has been made at a time when Israel is fighting wars on multiple fronts simultaneously. According to a new report, Israel has sold more weapons to other countries in 2024 than ever before. Currently, Israel is engaged in a war in Gaza. Meanwhile, it is conducting airstrikes and special military operations in Syria, Lebanon, and Yemen. International pressure is also mounting on Israel to end the war in Gaza. Despite this, the country is not willing to back down and is fiercely combating its enemies. According to new data from Israel's Ministry of Defense reported by Eurasian Times, Israel's defense exports reached a record $14.8 billion in 2024. This surpassed the previous high of $13 billion in 2023. Israel recorded a healthy year-on-year growth of 13% in arms sales, making it clear that its defense exports have remained unaffected by the growing global criticism and isolation due to the ongoing war in Gaza and allegations of human rights violations, and even genocide. Israel's Ministry of Defense stated, 'This is the highest figure to date and the fourth consecutive year a new record has been set for Israeli defense exports.' During its longest war, Israel's increasing arms sales stand in stark contrast to Russia, where defense exports have collapsed during the war in Ukraine. Data suggests that Israel may have expanded into some former Russian arms export markets. The Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) has calculated that from 2019 to 2023, there has been a reduction of less than half in the export of Russian weapons compared to the previous five years. According to data, Europe is the largest market for Israeli arms exports, accounting for 54% of Israel's defense exports. In 2023, exports of Israeli weapons to Europe were 35%. According to the Ministry of Defense, European countries purchased Israeli military products worth approximately 8 billion US dollars in 2024, while in 2023 it was 4.6 billion US dollars. The main reason for this is the Russia-Ukraine war, as Europe is increasing its defense spending and trying to replenish its dwindling military stockpiles. The historic deal between Germany and Israel for the Arrow 3 air defense system has made a significant contribution to the sale of these weapons. Israel Aerospace Industries signed a $3.8 billion agreement with Germany for the Arrow 3 missile defense system, making it the largest defense deal in Israel's history. In Asia, India is a major market for Israeli weapons. According to the SIPRI database, between 2020 and 2024, India was the world's second-largest arms importer after Ukraine. And after Russia and France, Israel was the third-largest arms exporter to India. During this period, Israel supplied 13% of all arms imports to India.
